If anyone is interested in reading more about this case, it's detailed in the book " Arsenic Under the Elms" by Virginia A. McConnell. It's my opinion that the reverend was guilty, but there really wasn't enough evidence to convict him. The only person in the story that I found really likeable was Mary's sister. The reverend's lawyers talked to her like she was a dog in court. It made me furious. It also said that the reverend published his autobiography later on. I keep meaning to see if I can find it, but I keep forgetting. :)

Glad we live in the age of birth control! Pregnant women are still more likely to become a victim of violence. It is interesting that Mary and the woman she worked for both thought she was pregnant. I wonder if the autopsy concealed this, because it is so inflammatory. I wonder if her son, William, had descendants. They can probably now know who his father was. It must be eerie to have such a tragic crime in a person’s family history.

It is useful to remember that forensic post mortem examination didn't by default include opening up the body. Knowledge of anatomy was improving but there was still body snatchers this late in the Victorian era. So it is not unreasonable to assume they only looked at her externally and even if opened up, instances of failing to find something as obvious as a uterus isn't uncommon either. I can't recall the case but another on this channel from Britain around this time involved a female killer who was pregnant and the doctor said she was not ..turns out she was pregnant they found after execution.

It’s awful when the killer so clearly got away with it, shame on the wife for covering it up, the prosecutor did an amazing job but ultimately people trusted the wife’s testimony more than the scientific evidence. It’s messed up how his religious position alone was enough to make people decide he couldn’t possibly be guilty of any crime, as if he wasn’t as corruptible as anyone else. That’s an issue even in the modern day/modern religious institutions. Just because they’re theoretically meant to be good people, doesn’t mean they actually are. Those sorts of trusted positions of power are the perfect hiding spot for some of the most evil people. I know a fair amount of Christians who no longer associate themselves with churches for that reason, it must be hard for genuine Christians to deal with the fact people sneak into their religion with ill intent, or just individuals who would never actually choose Christ and the sanctity to the Church (like they’re meant to) over their own selfish whims, but will happily get up in front of a church, lie through their teeth and say otherwise. I’m not sure of it’s origin, but I remember my grandfather (a devoted Catholic) often saying the most likely place to find the devil is in the church, as it’s the exact kind of place a corruptible force of evil would get the most enjoyment out of desecrating and destroying. I guess it’s one way to try and make sense of the crimes connected to religious institutions, especially within the Catholic Church.
@lovingmayberry3072 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I watched a documentary where a psychologist explained how there could be so many pedophiles as priests in the Catholic church. She explained that often men, who are homosexual and truly believe it to be a sin, seek out the positions in religion to try to right their "wrong behavior" and absolve themselves of the sin. Unfortunately most of them fail because they've placed themselves in a position that they really don't want to be in, they're really only there as a way to avoid hell.

Good morning Brief 💼 Case! Poor Mary...mistaken about a possible pregnancy, and murdered. Sigh...he did it. Regardless of the fact he was found not guilty. She told her friend in Conn that it was him whom she had relations with. She had met with him and told him, and was meeting with him to "get rid of" a nonexistent problem. I found it "odd" the position she was found in. One that a priest or pastor would pose the dead in. Or someone familiar with the victim would pose them in. Someone who didn't know her and didn't care would have no respect and would have left her in any position. The positioning showed "respect" if you can imagine "respect" and "murder" together. He. Did. It! And he was too ashamed and full of guilt to remain in that profession afterward, thus his change in career choice to carpenter. He may have escaped punishment in this world, but not the next. Thank you, BC!

First of all kudos for finding the great images for this story Briefy. Those lithographs are marvelous! Now as for the case: Note that the only reason people even suspected the Reverend was because Mary had confided in someone besides him that she thought she was pregnant, and that woman agreed that she was pregnant. Who knows why both women believed this if Mary wasn't really pregnant, but the important part is they believed it, which was why Mary tried to get the Reverend's help. It's also notable that one of the multiple obstacles she faced was the woman's husband refusing to deliver the message because he wanted no part in an abortion. -That could be simply because he didn't want to face charges as an accessory to a crime, or because he truly believed abortion was immoral. Either way, the incongruity between him and his wife goes to show how much more easily someone who cannot become pregnant can fail to recognize the hazards of it, and even if they do, not experience that recognition as empathy and a need for action; it's not their problem and never could be, after all. Had it not been for people other than the Reverend believing Mary was pregnant at the time she died, the discovery of her dead body wouldn't have launched a criminal investigation of the Reverend, the scrutiny of his purchases, the two trials, etc. and therefore not enough of a story to make a video about. For that matter, had abortion been safe and legal, a woman in Mary's circumstances could have gotten an abortion without anyone knowing and for little money, relative to the black market cost, and wouldn't have needed to seek the help of the man who used her body, impregnated her, and would have more incentive to get her an abortion than anyone besides herself. But instead he just killed her (and his presumed offspring inside her). To this very day, women just go missing and are never found or are found murdered but without sufficient evidence to convict their killers, and this happens all over the world, but it happens a lot MORE in regions where abortion is illegal. And it will happen a lot more in the U.S. if Roe v. Wade is overturned. People who can easily dismiss unwanted pregnancy as the woman or girl's own problem don't seem to realize that there was no DNA paternity testing in 1973, the year of Roe. But men and boys who impregnate women and girls will realize it, that her own problem is actually his also, that he won't be able to just say "I never touched her!" And some of them will take their fear as compelling enough reason to simply extinguish their problems, with a gun, a knife, poison, a rope, whatever it takes.

And still those people who want to overturn Roe V Wade will feel smug and like they did the right thing
@audreymuzingo9332 жыл бұрын
@@lazyhomebody1356 Exactly. And it won't even reduce the number of abortions by much. It will just stop them from being performed by real physicians and with HIPAA privacy.

Yep this Rev was a hypocrite if he did think abortion 'immoral' He seemed fine with other immorality like infidelity, poisoning, murderer etc

The good reverend was such a saintly man that he cheated on his wife, took advantage of a simple-minded young girl, and committed a premeditated, cold-blooded murder to cover his deeds. His "divine calling" must have been very powerful.

Back then the third or fourth son of a family entered the clergy. In the 1700s and 1800s in England it was the same. Nothing to do with being extra religious!

Besides, the clergy was not as strenuous as being a carpenter.

Dont worry I get your sarcasm at the Revs hypocrisy and full agree. All along it is he who is the immoral monster, as so many in the clergy were/are.

Adultery is one thing, but killing a young woman with child? That Preacher full of Sin..evil sin.. since Mary wasn't pregnant, maybe the arsenic was making her swell, no monthly. The Preacher's wife probably poisoned her. The Preacher finished her off. Her first child must of belong to the Preacher.? Secrets the Preacher and his wife wanted to keep from the Town. Don't think her Father did any harm to his Daughter. He was worried about her, went looking for her.
