When you don't have money for food or a safe place to live, it isn't "a little bit of money". Murdering someone to steal their stuff is horrifying, and most people (I hope) would choose soup kitchens or leaving town or something else. Back before TV movies became totally formulaic, there was a pretty good one called A Death of Innocence starring Shelley Winters, and the background crime in the movie is clearly based on this case, but the movie is about the female defendant's mother, who travels to her daughter's trial in NYC from a small town in Idaho, completely convinced that her sweet, lovely daughter must be innocent, but gradually she comes to realize that she has raised a soul-less sociopath who is probably guilty. I think I saw the movie on YT, worth a look.

This is weird... they lured the poor lady under Madeline's real name but never thought they could be tracked? Anyway, a nice cautionary tale that even while being beautiful and intelligent, one can perfectly screw up their life pursuing an unrealistic dream and mixing with wrong people. Even if she was unaware of the murder/robbery scheme, she couldn't have been so naïve so as not to figure out that he was involved in some shady business. It's more like, she didn't want to admit it to herself, and paid for it with her future.
@mariadenise19655 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing too! That poor women was lured to the hotel under the guise of meeting Madeline's new husband. Why did they think the police would not make the connection!? All the police would have to do is show the hotel clerk a picture of Madeline and he would tell the police that she was registered as a Mrs. Leopold. Not only that, but how are you going to lure a woman to come see you and then just rob her and let her go? Of course they would have to kill her! Not surprised they got caught...this was a poorly thought out "plan" and I use the word "plan" loosely. They all got what they deserved for killing that woman.

As criminals, they weren't exactly brilliant were they? But I am fascinated that he tried to drag his uncle into it and vindicate Madeleine and the other bloke. So I tend to believe him, at least about the other guy. I think Madeleine was an accomplice, but that she did not realise it would end the way it did. I think the Uncle was the actual killer and that for once in his life Eli was telling the truth. But they must have groomed this woman through Madeleine. Who the hell trots off to a party with someone they have 'met briefly?' The whole plan was ridiculous. Lure some woman into a hotel bedroom and rob her. So she is not going to walk out and tell the police exactly what you looked like, wore, sounded like... So you have to kill her, In an hotel room! (Facepalm) Where the staff have seen you, spoken to you and the body will be found very quickly! Probably the worst set up ever.

@@greatunwashed1856 I have no doubt at all that you're being absolutely serious - and of course im in prison; how else would i get free wifi and have all day to just go on KZbin waiting to be insulted? It's my LIFE!

Bucket Head , oh, don’t be insulted, excellent response, just a gentle ribbing, I suspect we’re both watching,”Brief Case” now.

Love to see a documentary style video, with straight facts! So many crime KZbin videos contain 75% opinion narrative. I don't care how the facts make you feel, facts don't care about feelings.

Interesting, So the uncle who ratted out his nephew for a deal with the DA goes free even though the nephew said it was his uncle who killed the victim. I'm not buying Madeline Webb's hardship of not able to get a good job. She had a college degree which is something uncommon in that period. And this was a time of massive build up in the US economy for war production. Huge numbers of women were hired to work in defense plants, factories and other jobs because so many men were in uniform leaving employers with a shortage of workers to fill the vacated positions. It's estimated that over 6 million US women entered the workforce from 1941 to 1945 and that does not include the 350,000 that were also in uniform in noncombat roles. Because many men were in the military, women began to appear in professional positions such as journalists, photographers, and news broadcasters. In that kind of economy, she couldn't get a decent job? Not buying it.

badweetabix- Me neither. But sounds like she didn't want to do just any job. Apart from the waitressing stint, she was only interested modelling, acting dancing or singing.

the war had only just started and america wasn't involved yet so I don't think those jobs existed yet
