@AFnord Жыл бұрын
The Wraithlord of 3rd edition really showed that GW did not understand the value of toughness. It was a bit of a problem unit, and a lot of armies struggled with taking them down if someone decided to bring more than one. That said, a ranged support dread wasn't half bad in 3rd edition. As someone who went to tournaments back in the days, I would regularly face armies that brought twin las + missile launcher dreads, and they would preform pretty well, even if they were by no means overpowered. It is a shame that they went overboard with nerfing the multimelta and assault cannon though. I guess GW wanted to be on the safe side, after 2nd edition, and not create weapons that were quite so oppressive on the battlefield, but they went too far.
@Kaiyanwang82 Жыл бұрын
The wraithlord was strong but it didn't make the Dread weak. The WL was one of the few strongpoints of an overall fragile army, if you exclude vehicle shenanigans. You are also more vulnerable to stuff like neuro-gauntlets (but not poisons).
@gelmorn18 Жыл бұрын
I think another thing that makes the loss of the basic dreadnought so impactful for the community is that for so many of us it was our first bigger model kit that we bought. You just finished all of your tactical marines that either came in the 40K starter box or from just a 10 man kit and now you have the confidence to try your hand at something bigger with more details so you pick up the dreadnought, plus you thought it was the most badass looking model in the space marines outside of terminators.

I started with the assaul on Macragge box. The dreadnought was the best part of it.
@gelmorn18 Жыл бұрын
The loss of the old Dreadnought has hit the community in such an unexpectedly hard way. No one cares about the sterngaurd veterans that much so their loss wasn't that big of a deal but the loss of the basic dreadnought has a kind of finality to it. Like even if most people didn't buy one for a very long time there was always this reassurance that it would be available to purchase if the mood ever struck you, but with it no longer available it now makes us unsure of what GW will put to chopping block next.

I wonder how many people's introduction to the dreadnought was it ambushing two banshees with a Koolaid man entry through solid rock, snatching up the banshees with its power fists like they were made of paper, crushing the first and backhand slamming it into the rocks, and as it raises the remaining foe in its power fist it simply states "I HAVE COME TO DESTROY YOU" before unleashing the full fury of his heavy flamer point blank in the eldar's face.

"...Sustained fire dice,...an average of 4.5 hits..." It was supposed to be much higher for the pay off against a chance to jam for infantry. This was raised at a Q&A at the only 2Ed tournament at WHW before 3ED was announced. The question was asked as to why the average number of shots was so low, and the responder (Gav Thorpe) stated it wasn't, as the dice had two 3s, two 2s, a 1, and a jam. This led to people taking out their dice to reveal that there were a lot of variations of sustained fire dice out in the wild! Pretty much no one in the audience had dice marked up like this, only the WHW GW staff themselves. Some had a single 3, with most having both a single 3 and also a single 2! I still have mine, straight out of the 2ed box set, and that's what I had- average 1.5 hits per die. The look on Gav's face (author of the upcoming 3Ed) indicated to me that this was going to lead to a whole change to the rulebook he'd just 'finished'...
@1985slipstream Жыл бұрын

I’m quite certain 2ED Dreadnought power fists did have a superpower. They got a bonus to vehicle damage results due to their ability to twist and rip sheet metal, I think. i've built up an metal only gk army and went to my first tournament mid may. i brought 3 Dreadnoughts, 2 with multimelter and claw and one with lascannon and rocket launcher, sure they were outclassed by almost every other armored vehicle, but they werent nothing. also the opponents loved them. Damn shame there are gone now.

This is exactly what I'm planning on doing. I'm going to build a Blood Angels army, all firstborn. Starting off with a tac squad, substituting a couple of those Space marine heroes blind buy guys as tac marines so i can kitbash a lieutenant and captain out of the tac squad, then painting death company and devastators alongside kitbashing a techmarine. Using a sanguinary priest as an apothecary, and rounding the force out with those shiny new terminators, a rhino, and a furioso and venereable dread respectively. Long live Firstborn Marines!!!

Ok this old style icons and hit markers send me right back to my first ever battle report, inside my first ever White Dwarf, wityh the titan imperator on the cover. I miss these, when the WD was more than just a glorified catalog of new stuff.

So sad that minus modifiers and armour values are not a thing anymore...

I still got 2 of the chunky metal boys, and all of my 2nd edition books, and most of the data cards. These things used to be gods, I miss those days.

Timely, as the Galaxy’s deadliest and most mobile washing machines are leaving the game :( Should probably order a couple for 2nd Ed whilst I can.

Great video! I remember being disappointed at how unremarkable the Dreadnaughts were in Epic. And then yes... A few years later they were unremarkable in 40 K too.

I love them.

I took my old Ultramarine Dreadnought out for a spin in a HH game not long ago. A long with a bunch of other RT era old hammer space marines. It felt really good.

I believe the reason for arming with a single lascannon was simply a WYSIWYG nod to some Rogue Trader era Dreadnought models which were only armed with a single lascannon (or equivalent energy weapon. One of them had a conversion beam disrupter).

I used to used my Dark Angels Dreadnought in every battle. The thing was unkillable. I once had a two on one battle fighting against a Chaos marine army and a traitor guard tank company and my Dread almost singlehandedly won the game. He killed a hellhound, two Leman Russ tanks, and put the final shot into a deamon prince, all while being dead centre in the board and being shot at by nearly the whole tank army. Eventually the Dreadnought was immobilized, and lost its missile launcher, but it survived, still firing till the end of the game. The guard player wad furious that he couldn't kill it.

I recently got back into the hobby and was like "I HAVE TO BUY A BOX DREAD BEFORE THEY GO AWAY" about three months ago... turns out I was more right than I thought and I might see if I can scrounge up another one or two before stocks disappear.

I’m a Grey Knights main player, so I can only use the little box dreads. I love mine and use them very often.

I will be guarding my Dark Angels dreadnought. I just remember seeing the dreadnought move in Dawn of War intro.

as a lad, my pocket money was based on my goal scoring record for the village side. i was top scorer in the 1999/2000 season (44 goals all comps) and spent my earnings on the dreadnaught with multi-melta we've seen here (i collected blood angels and thought i had to have the one with the chapter-matching box art...). as you we're talking about the dread being a deadly/broken unit, i kept thinking 'really? mine was completely useless on the table top'. then i remembered wich edition we were in. it was favourite model, but it never achieved anything for me in battle.
