Fun fact: this EP was produced by Ken Greer of Red Rider. Come to think of it, Tom Cochrane and Red Rider were another band that swam against the stream in the '80s. Hmm, now that I think about it, the same could be said of Bryan Adams. I'll also toss in John Mellencanp and Bruce Springsteen for our American friends - although Springsteen, like Petty, got his start in the 70's and so was really just keeping on track (and away from synths and dance music) rather than rejecting the musical zeitgeist right out of the chute (like Adams, Cochrane, the Hip, and Blue Rodeo all did).

Last American Exit…I think you’ll remember you heard this in the Canada Day Concert…it was when he signed the kid’s autograph while singing it. 😊

Another band you've praised for going their own way as an old school, no-synths band in the 1980's was Blue Rodeo.

And Tom Petty just kept going with a roots rock sound throughout the 80's (first album was '76).

The video for this song was partly filmed in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario in a bar called The Manor as the house band. Great tune as they all are!! Proud Kingstonian here 🇨🇦

Love how Killing Time's opening guitar lic is perhaps the genesis for all the future iconic slow burn guitar intros. Like in Wheat Kings, Nautical Disaster and most similarly It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken.

They used to play quite a few covers around this time. "I'm not your steppin' stone", "Suzie Q", "Proud Mary" (I think?)...

The Hip, was like the Canadian House Band, that decided to stay & play in Canada. As others have said, you may also might want to look into Blue Rodeo and also, Tom Cochrane and Red Rider.

I was in "uni" (first degree) when I purchased this record. I had just seen them while bartending at my university's mega-sized bar, Federation Hall. I also remember how great it felt hearing Small Town Bringdown straight off the bat.

A few of these songs have music videos that show what the early live experience was like.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpiwd4KrlJmgnKc kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJjSon5udreShc0

First ep is good, not quite the greatness of the remaining brilliant catalog. Production has that 80s sheen that dates it. They have amazing demos during this time and before the 1st full length that are much more representative (IMO). Anyway any Hip is a great request. Oh and I agree best band ever (tied for me with Genesis).

Not the best stuff, as you will obviously already know. Some little rough diamonds here. Killing Time is the only kind of song that would ever show up on later albums. The rest is just the kind of bar rock they were excellent at
