The customer concern involves a battery that fails to start the car after it has been sitting - maybe a day or so - maybe a few weeks.
What is the best way to find the cause?
I may have an answer for you in today’s edition of The Trainer!

On some European makes, longer than that!

Still didn’t talk about actually finding the draw which is the hardest part. Running through power and ground distribution, circuit configurations. Typically this part is the hardest part in actually finding everything that’s under that circuit.

Thanks for the comment. I'll address that in our December TechTip - out next Monday!

I agree that the scope.makes the most sense for many reasons . However , as a DIY with a DVOM , I am using the basics . I don't know how many diodes go bad in alternators , but a ripple voltage test is quick and would save time - if that is the problem . My ESI battery tester has it . The Topdon battery tester , UNDER $ 50.00 , has it . And you can use a DVOM set to AC voltage to test at the battery . It should be .5 or half a volt or less . I can't see a high end shop not having a tech trained on a scope . Most shops will be left in the dust .

I noticed Not once did you mention about pulling fuses so I’m thinking along the lines that you don’t like that idea probably because if you pull of use when you put it back in maybe it might inspire one module to turn on don’t know. I await your reply

If you're chasing a module that won't turn off, opening the circuit may cause the module to reset and you won't be able to verify the problem.

@@MotorAgeMagazine hang on. Ok so fuse is the bridge for the electricity to get across the gap to whatever its there to power. But if you have the neg lead going through your multimeter to get to the neg battery pos and set to millivolts, if you see the draw suddenly drop, theres the drain. Was on a job today for a customer. Found his drain that way. Last of the fuses to pull in his engine bay. 70 amp marked speedo. Yesterdays customer though I never found and I had pulled all fuses and relays engine and inside car plus all engine connectors. Had same bad luck on 2010 Ford Kuga. Then read known issue was bluetooth module. So told customer to disconnect his phones from it and that was the drain. Pulling fuses has to be the best idea. Someone else said lead with low current test light from battery neg and then if touching fuses it lights theres your issue. Na I truly think pulling is good, but likely better if you dont put back straight away. Pull next fuse and next fuse. Till drain goes.

@@jamesbarratt593 Pulling fuses is a good technique and one we've used for a long time. My only point is that once you've pulled the culprit fuse, how do you locate the component if that component resets as a result? Another reality are modules that turn themselves on and off so monitoring current draw while testing ensures you're testing while the drain is occurring. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

@@MotorAgeMagazineUsually cars with drain are old cheap cars worth nothing. So to do the voltage drop way would be real fast and then my hourly charge would suffer tremendously. Pulling fuses I can make the job 3 times longer and so the money coming is better. 😀

@@jamesbarratt593 sounds like ur a parts changer most likely lying to ur self and ur customers so much that the empty skin covered gristle chunk attached to ur shoulders can’t even grow random patches of straight hair!
