"Our first interest [in the problem of flight] began when we were children. Father brought home to us a small toy actuated by a rubber string which would lift itself into the air. We built a number of copies of this toy, which flew successfully..." -Orville Wright, How We Invented the Airplane

Thanks, Molly! History of Aviation is interesting, but it's Wright brothers' story that really inspires me. Because there had been nothing except for a lot of ugly planes that could only hop around before them, and they were the only one who turned out to be able to carry out the impossible. That was an amazing feat of engineering! So I'd like to suggest a documentary from NOMA, about the creation of authentic copy of Wright brothers' plane, called "Wright Brothers' Flying Machine", A cool one!

they lived in dayton , ohio for most of their lives. they went and did one flight on some sand dunes five miles from kitty hawk, then they did the rest of their flights in dayton. kitty hawk is attributed with the first flight because thats where the closest telegraph station was, so the news came from the kitty hawk telegraph place.

Interesting video..... The Wright Brothers might have been the first to sustain flight, however, Richard Pearse seemed to achieve what quite a few people consider flight before the Wright Brothers. I honestly have to side with Richard Pearse, seeing as how he is from New Zealand (as am I), but it's a major feat for both parties, all considered.

No mention of the Chinese? They invented kites (the things the Wright Bros first experimented with). They had the first manned-kite experiments (using convicts for "pilots"). And the "bamboo dragons" are the world's first propellers (toys) that became popular in England (inspiring the Wright Brothers as kids). Also, the fabric that the Wright Bros used for wings was called "Muslin" which was created in Bagdhad and imported into Europe.

Alberto Santos Dumont was the inventor of the first REAL airplane, the 14-Bis, that means, a machine that can take off, flight, and land with its own propulsion force. The wright brothers did it earlier, but it was necessary a catapult-like device to launch the wright flyer, so, its NOT an actual airplane =)

Not quite the same method of axis control today as with the Wright Bros... they actually warped the wings to steer, rather than using control surfaces like ailerons, spoilers, rudders, etc. In fact, I don't know of any other plane than the Wright flyer which uses their wing warping idea.

Henry Coanda is the first man to invent the airplane! geez He and the Wright brothers were in the same period but different countries so that's why the brothers got more advertisment for the invention(just like many other cases in history). Despite all of that Henry Coanda is still said to be the first man to really built an airplane! Go Romania!

@leoborros .... When I googled the definition of airplane, the majority of the definitions said something along the lines of an aircraft with a fixed wing which is capable of flight using forward motion, such as a propeller, jet engine, etc. ... So, according to those definitions, the Wright Brothers did make an ACTUAL airplane.... Stop arguing semantics just to show you're knowledgeable. Though it would have made sense to have him mentioned in this video...
