Vickie and Chris you guys are amazing, you have presented this case beautifully. I am sitting here in Claremont , New Hampshire USA crying and moved by this story. I am a social worker who have worked in several mental retreats in which some of my clients suffer through identity concerns. . What a story , the humanity of it. Much respect for the way you two have expressed this story. You are amazing people. Wish you were closer I have very similar mind set as yourselves. Thank you. Be well be safe.

So kind of you and we have to admit, this was the hardest story we have covered as we knew full well that if we disrespected 'Bill', despite of the crime he committed, and didn't acknowledge his identity, it may have infuriated some people. Myself and Vickie have no dealings with sexual identity and the community, so it was very hard to try and find the right words. Not sure if this makes sense, but hopefully you know what I mean.

A very well presented video. I have another theory about the murder and it concerns Bill's headaches. He could have been suffering from motor epilepsy whereby the sufferer repeats their last action from when the fit starts until it passes. It would explain the repeated blows, Bill's actions afterwards re the body and even drawing attention to the bag - he simply did not realise that he was responsible for it all! Epilepsy is not very well understood, even today, and fits take many forms, I know this from personal experience with a close family member who suffers from at least 3 different types, one of which is the motor fit and they have no memory of what happened during the fit. So I think 😅that I am with you Chris, and, in this instance, Bill should not have been hung.

Hi Ronnie, hope you are well. Yes, we have read she was born in Bolton but we could find no census records to back it up, thats we were didnt commit to saying it was true. Thank you also for clarifying which Plantation Street! I was looking on old OS maps as we also read that some of the buildings had been demolished and the area was rebuilt. When looking at the maps, something was bugging us as her house number just doesnt show at the Plantation Street in Rawtenstall which then got us thinking perhaps it wasnt that street after all. By that way, we contacted the Rossendale Civic Society asking if we could use some images from the book Odd Man Out and there is a photo I think that you are credited with - that of an older Nancy Chadwick. We asked if we could use it and give credit, but they only got back to us this morning, so it was a little too late unfortunately.

@DaysofHorror2 ай бұрын
The motive we 'thought' we recorded. We took about 5 mins to discuss it but that file, along with a couple more files are not on the memory card. We can only think I pressed the record button twice, therefore stopping recording even though I thought it was recording. BUT, the motive - we believe Bill may have took the money from Nancy's shopping bag as an after-thought and before she threw it into the river. Being close to Annie Cook, Bill may have thought at that moment that the money may have helped her clear some of her debt and to also try and impress Annie by having some money of her own, rather than perhaps relying on Annie? It's just a thought we had but we were gutted that the file, along with others, just didn't record. Believe me, I searched through all of the recorded footage but it just isn't on the card.

Another very touching and well presented story. In regards to the victim Nancy, she was very vulnerable to criminal interest because of her age, no family, and her apparent life on the edges of the local community, and the fact it was believed she carried a lot of money around with her. These vulnerabilities were increased by her habit of putting herself in to other people’s homes. In regards to Bill / Maggie, in his earlier life he would have been subject to a lot of strong emotions in regards to his gender identity, which may have lead him to be the subject some very unpleasant reactions to his situation brought about by society’s views at the time. Because of these factors he might have developed a self loathing and a lack of empathy for others. Bill was thought to have been in financial trouble. if one was to look at a risk analysis triangle it might be that the following is relevant. The antecedence was Nancy and bills journey through life. The behaviour was bill might have exploited Nancy’s vulnerabilities (some might be evidenced by the lack of attendance at Nancy’s funeral) The conjecture was Nancy being alone with bill in the house which enabled the outcome. Outcome, Nancy’s death, and maybe the self loathing and detachment from mainstream society bill might have felt led,to him wanting to ‘more important and respected and accepted’ by his knowledge about the crime, which eventually led to his conviction. I feel one of the unanswered questions was what was the involvement and knowledge of Bill’s partner.

It sounds like he may have been tending towards transgender identification before the operation. I very much doubt that a hysterectomy could turn someone transgender. He may have felt more free to identify as a male after such surgery, but people usually have a pretty longstanding pull or drive to identify with another gender before a transition. A dear friend is a transgender woman and has shared her very remarkable journey with me- she is finally her authentic self and is happy.

The reason for few attending the funeral or signing the petition? "Don't get involved" was the law of the land, no one would freely sign anything back in the day, who could see your name and make something of it?! People kept their dates of birth secret, no one discussed politics unless they wanted to get into a fight, let alone tell who they'd voted for, society was seriously way more reserved than we can appreciate today. There would have been plenty behind doors who'd have cared but not in public. Nought to do with Bill being Bill, possibly a little, but the church still held sway on all matters including people's deportment in public, given that they'd just scraped through the 2nd disagreement the feeling was probably keep your head down and be thankful it's not you. Don't agree with the death penalty, it achieves nothing. Life imprisonment with no parole is a far more cruel punishment, a living death.

Really didn't need to be caught.Could and should have just kept very quiet and everybody would simply have thought it was a robbery. Did the hard work for the police.Sad case but I feel it was manslaughter.I hear what people say now about people born in the wrong body.To put up with all that would be hard.We are still too quick to judge people.They could have allowed him to be hung in men's clothes.Still works!

A tragic story indeed. I've listened to all the evidence and I agree that given the circumstances hanging was an unsafe verdict. True, "Bill" had tried to cover up the murder even if it had been an unpremeditated killing it was the point of covering it up and attempting to cover it up; Had Bill gone directly to the police with a confession it would be manslaughter - killing in a rage, but the after thought to cover it up was to me the reason that Bill was cognisant of the crime - after the fact. I would have gone for a verdict of being committed to a mental health hospital for life, which to some may seem worse than hanging. As we now know the effects of hormonal imbalance and it's effects on mental stability we can see it differently - in 1948 it would be seen as a hanging offense as a warning to the community of such actions as well as the accepted way to dispose of a murderer, whatever gender they were. An interesting case, thanks for bringing it to our attention. On another topic, this morning I was awoken by a camera lighting light, flashing on and off. I got up and watched it for a whilst before making a brief video I put on KZbin of it. I was not sure if it had become faulty as it was in the off position - but flickered. You can see from the video. The room was quite warm as it is usually, it was half three this morning. Since the light has just stayed on - although the switch is in the off position - I take it to be a faulty appliance but in the dark of three - ish this morning, it was quite different to me.

@@Daysofhorror-vickie Just click on my name and you will get the channel and content. And thanks for asking. I did a follow up video showing it was a faulty device too as a short. But I've had a few encounters of the other side in my lifetime. My Gran was a medium with the Greater World Spiritualist church and she had other more "traditional" beliefs. Thanks for your reply.

Yes sadly think the verdict was right- the severity of the attack not justified under any circumstances- as to her medical issues - the operation she had could that have been either a DandC or a hysterectomy? - being told she was in the change might have made her think she had had a sex change leading to her cross dressing maybe? We'll never know but a sad story all around- the insanity angle would never have stood due to the planning process post murder- she hid the body, put it in the road etc - all in all a waste of life on all sides- well done folks a really good job. X

We can be honest and say we arent exactly sure when she began to crossdress. There is one photo we did use which does show her looking younger. Its online and she is wearing a hat. I think we added it to one community post last week. So she may have been dressing as a man before 1935 and the operation in Manchester. I'll try and find out for clarity.

@@DaysofHorrorfair point- then maybe in her mind if she acted and dressed like a man the pain would go as she wasn't female anymore 🤔

What happened to the money that Nancy had in her hand bag?
@DaysofHorror2 ай бұрын
That's one thing we just couldn't find anything on. The only one article we found was Bill admitting she took the money. But where she placed it, we don't know. I'd think it was in her house, and the police would have found it, but we need to try and find more reports to be sure.
