Before his inauguration German media (Spiegel) had an interview with his translator (Norbert Heikamp) and he said exactly the same: 1. it is very difficult to translate him, because he jumps from topic to topic without any sense or clear line of thought 2. He speaks so randomly that you can hardly prepare for his speeches 3. He contradicts himself several times in one speech, which makes the foreign audience think the translator got it wrong

I have a really hard time she speaks 5 languages when she's been in the US since 1995 and barely speaks English. This is in fact a very real issue. Making Trump sound less crude and incoherent than he actually is undermines the severity of having him as a leader. I read some Trump quotes that were translated into Mandarin in a newspaper and he actually sounded coherent and non-maniacal. My father who only has access to Trump's content through these newspapers is now under the impression that Trump is a fantastic leader and supports him. Like seriously. As much as I understand it is difficult to translate Trump's speech, it is frustrating knowing that non-English speakers are getting a filtered and watered-down version of his bigotry.

The reason the ASL translator was more "accurate" was because of the way they are trained. In their first semester they are taught how to tell a story and in that they learn how to "be" their characters.

I went to a drag show and they had an ASL interpreter there. She became a part of the show in a way because she really got into the performance. She was "singing" with her hands and dancing. It was really cool. I suppose in order to show someone's tone of voice to someone who cannot hear, you have to be a sort of character who acts it out physically. It's quite fascinating.

However, as an ASL interpreter I have to convey the message as it was sent. If the speaker's grammar is incorrect, that fact MUST be clear in my sign. If a speaker's message is incoherent, my sign MUST be incoherent. Errors must be conveyed as spoken.

@undyingsoul3949
@undyingsoul3949 5 жыл бұрын
@@SweetAlis1 There is nothing incoherent and confusing in his speeches. A professional interpreter should also be able to easily deal with vulgar and insensitive speech. You barely have any time to overthink specific words or phrases and feel more uncomfortable than you already are if you have to listen closely, remember everything said, immediately translate everything in your head and deliver the interpretation while this process continues with the ongoing speech. It's not the interpreter's job to correct what the speaker says. It's just unrealistic for a professional interpreter to have such issues with "insensitive", but easy-to-translate speech. However, it makes sense for this show to have these guys pretend to have these issues for comedy purposes.

Look, having nuclear - my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart - you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I’m one of the smartest people anywhere in the world - it’s true! - but when you’re a conservative Republican they try - oh, do they do a number - that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune - you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged - but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me - it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are - nuclear is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what’s going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? - but when you look at what’s going on with the four prisoners - now it used to be three, now it’s four - but when it was three and even now, I would have said it’s all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don’t, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years - but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.

Actually, I don't think Melania is as hot as people make her out to be. That's not to say she is ugly, it just means I personally know many people whose looks are on par with Melania and more than a couple who are better looking. Unfortunately, some of them would go for the likes of someone like Donald Trump, but none of them would like to be ignored while their man was going on about how great some other woman looked. They would put up with it, but they would care. If in fact Melania doesn't care, it's because she doesn't care about Trump as a husband, and not because she thinks she's all that and a bag of chips,

Though that's not saying much, considering he talks - to quote Colbert - like a sign language gorilla that got hit in the head. But the thing is: they don't need a translator. They Germans can understand him without translation. Which might be one of the reasons why he's so extremely unpopular there. Well that and unfortunate parallels to certain leaders in their own past.

I feel sorry especially for the Japanese and Arabic translators. Translating from English to Japanese/Arabic is already hard enough with all of the cultural nuances but his rambling and how he changes topic mid sentence must be so hard to translate. I don't know if the average person realizes but Arabic and Japanese are ordered very differently to English. E.g. the sentence "The boy kicked the ball. Would be ordered as. Arabic: "Kicked the boy the ball." Japanese: "Boy ball kicked." Like imagine how hard it is to translate already grammatically incorrect sentences into languages with different word orders.

No.. boy can come before kicked. Tenses differ. The main thing is there are many words which are in Arabic and not in English and vice versa. Thus many times you cant translate a single word. Aside from that, the sentences can be structured VERY differently. For example in certain questions the number of people or gender wont even come up. While in others every verb has a gender and a tense and a number, making it hard for sentences with you or he or them. Also there is no is in arabic. I think you undertsnad.

@@edsanchez1893 I mean, yes and no. He has to worry about losing his job, and about confusing the Spanish speakers with Trump's gobbledygook. As the Japanese and the Syrian translators said, if you translate something so that it sounds stupid, ungrammatical, or self-contradictory, it will just sound like you're a bad translator or stupid yourself. As a multilingual myself who has had to translate, I can tell you that it's impossible to translate languages word-for-word, because often there is no direct word correspondence that conveys the same definition *and* connotation, so you instead have to translate the *idea*, not the *words*. And when the ideas make no sense, how can you translate them on the fly? What, figure out a way to turn the message into something that sounds dumb in the other language? I'm telling you, languages don't have a 1:1 correspondence of grammar and words, so it's impossible to be 100% accurate in translation, and it's worse when the guy you're translating is a bumbling idiot. Don't call the Mexican translator incompetent. If he was assigned to translate a US president, he must be quite good.

First I'd like to share a bit ...I started teaching myself sign when I was six, after seeing the deaf students in my school and being immediately facinated by their joy. When I grew up and started my family my second son was born early and lost his hearing at 2 months old. I've been signing for over five decades. The day trump was elected every deaf/hh person on earth simultaneously gave trump the exact same sign name. It was magical!!! You can guess what it is .. his hair flapping on the top of his head. Sign language is clearly a visual language. If you want to interpret you must use facial expressions and body language to be accurate. You're taught to show the emotions on your face and with your body. All of that being said for no real reason... I LOVE that sign intrepretor! She needs her own show! I'm afraid I'm going to need you to tell us who she is. That was FANTASTIC!!!

I teach English as a second language and on many occasions, my students have asked me "How come I understand Donald Trump's speeches and interviews, but can't pass the listening part of TOEFL exam?" ... I'm also Russian and a translator, and I absolutely agree that he is easy to translate because he builds his sentences like a 5th grader. Also, you should check out some nonsensical speeches of Russian politicians we have to deal with, where they combine two or three different proverbs that have no English equivalent... So, there was no reason to kick that poor Russian translator off the panel lol =)

Were this only an educational show then I'd agree, but because of their agenda (politically, hating trump, but also, you know, valuing humor above all else) I can understand it. I don't think he would've fit within the structure of this segment. But I do wish they would've left him on there; I was curious as to how and why he differed from the others.

@oremfrien
@oremfrien 5 жыл бұрын
However, it is easier to translate a coherent sentence, even if it has numerous complexities and local irregularities than an incoherent sentence. This is because, with a coherent sentence, the information being conveyed is clear. With an incoherent sentence, the information is not clear at all and you have to guess what the intended information is. This is why it is easier to translate Nietzche for most translators/interpreters than Trump.

Thing is, a huge amount of people in the world understands English. Almost everyone knows Trump isn't very smart. The translators point of view is different- They have a job they need to keep. If a translator tries to translate Trump word-by-word, his boss will think something like: "This translator is dumb as fuck!", "I bet he isn't even translating right." Wouldn't You do the same? Wouldn't You make Trump seem smarter, just to keep Your job?

A translator's true job is to convey meaning. With Trump's rambling style, it is very difficult to repeat his words to anyone without sounding off, never mind doing it in a different language. Trump is a master of the psychosis people have where they only hear what they want to, so his style translates very well to audiences who are not seeking any real information or new ideas, but wish only to be told over and over again what they already believe.

No. It's your opinion that he isn't very smart. Many people view him as very smart. Telling by his opinions and what he's been achieving, it's more likely that he's actually pretty intelligent. He just doesn't bow down to politically correct speech.

I really do love how easy it is to convey facial expressions for ASL interpreters. Facial expressions are already a huge part of signing, so it kind of comes more naturally to mirror Trump accurately. Word inflection is also easier because most words have a direct counterpart.

No POTUS has been perfect, they all have their flaws, but at least many had better vocab than a 7 year old and could actually put together an administration and govern, whether you liked their politics or not. His problem is he's both personally reprehensible AND laughably incompetent at the highly cerebral daily grind of being POTUS. Waaaaaay out of his shallow depth of being just the flashy face of a family boutique brand business, where his kids and execs did all the real work. That crap clearly isn't working in the WH - it'd be funny if the stakes weren't so high.
