Alice has done such a good job with the new characters as well as slowly introducing storylines that were foreshadowed in season one like with Tao and his Dad or what happens with Darcy. It is all done so well. I really hope Netflix gives them more than just a season 4 because we need the 4th, 5th and 6th book on screen.

To be fair, I think Imogen caught on in episode 4. Charlie avoided her gaze when she asked if him and Ben had history. Imogen backed off when Charlie looked away. I think she confirmed what Nick warned her.

Imogen knew since Sports Day, but she was waiting for Nick to tell her... he was acting like a clod so she finally just put him out of his misery. That scene is so hilarious... honestly, she's the funniest character in the show, and so daffy and adorable.

the thing is, you can't even be mad at Charlie's parents cuz Charlie is too distracted by Nick. I mean he's LITERALLY sitting next to his parents while the teacher tells them that Charlie's grades are slipping, and what is Charlie doing: he's staring at Nick😭. I kept saying "Charlie, if you want to go see Nick, THEN JUST DO YOUR SCHOOLWORK"😭But I will admit that Charlie's Mom is being kinda harsh, and i dont like that she just automatically blamed it on Nick, (it couldve been his friends for all she knows) she definitely is not Nick's biggest fan, but I also feel like this would be a normal response from a parent

I am low key mad at them because they grounded him without digging deeper. He just as well might have troubles focusing because he basically does not eat. I have a history of ED. It has to do a lot with regaining control over ones life. So what they did they took another bit of it away from him and thus he refused yet another meal offer from his father. You can see the father feels in his heart they could do better. Because they really could. They didn't even talk with him. They don't even recognize his problems. As a parent I kind of understand where that came from but they definitely could do better.

yes but they didn't have to ban nick completely. that's just going to cause issues in his relationship w his parents, esp his mum, bc to charlie, they're keeping him from seeing his biggest support and comfort. it's gonna distract charlie MORE to not be able to see nick, and OFC he's gonna want to sneak around to see him. his dad had the right idea w not banning him from nick completely, just restricting it.

His mom is harsh but she *did* see him go thru all the bullying and we don't know what that was like for her because she got almost zero screen time in Season 1. She might have also suspected the anorexia. I thought Charlie was being too wrapped up in Nick also. Nick was thinking of Charlie but still getting his school work done. Charlie was just completely letting everything slide. I don't think it's just Nick though. Nick is almost like an escape for him having to face other anxieties. I don't think she should have completely banned him from seeing Nick. They could have worked out something where they could hang out on weekends, including Fridays. But I also felt like Charlie's letting schoolwork slide is totally realistic. The mom's reaction is also realistic because often parents have knee-jerk reactions when they're worried. I'm a parent and a gramma and I can attest to this, although I tended to be pretty open with my kids. I don't think I ever grounded them. My mom used to ground me and then relent after a few days. I mentioned this to my husband (highschool sweetheart) and he said, "I remember. It seemed like she was grounding you ever other day." My mom's concern partly had to do with the fact that all my friends were at least 3 years older then me and out of high school. I also agree with the person who points out Charlie's anorexia is definitely causing concentration/fatigue problems.

I can’t believe i’m saying this but I actually ended up really liking Imogen! She’s so sweet. You can tell she just wants some friends. I mean sure, she’s a bit awkward and sometimes kinda cringe, but so is everybody. I’m really happy to see her start gaining more friends and loving herself more. I’m saying this after watching the entire series btw. In the first episode this growth hasn’t really happened yet. Tara and Charlie are def my favorite characters though

I love how Immogen was trying to give Nick chance to tell her about Charlie and him but quickly catched up on the whole not being ready thing and pulled new pictures of the new dog up and trying later again with the whole 'how did you get to know' thing. As yes, she clearly knew but wanted to be a good friend. Trying to make it easy for him, but without pushing. I really loved that.

I’m 41, and my mom still thinks, “it was a phase,” unfortunately. I came out as bi to my parents in my early 20s. Some people just can’t wrap their heads around it or stay in denial. The way I cried during Charlie’s speech at the end of episode 1 over protecting Nick. First reason is the amount of pressure he is putting on himself to try to control something he can’t. I’d like to think that Imogen knew but she was waiting for Nick to tell her. I think Charlie’s parents reacted exactly how any parent would, it would be the same if they were a straight couple too. And Tori is amazing!

I mean there are plenty of parents who WOULDN'T react the way that Charlie's parents reacted. Nick's mom being the example IN THE SHOW of a parent who does not parent in the way that Charlie's parents parent... I know that if I had a kid I wouldn't react in the way that Charlie's parents reacted either... Because my parents also didn't react in that way when I came out to them as a teen. So no, I wouldn't say that Charlie's parents reacted the way "any parent would"... Charlie's mom has a very Authoritarian style of parenting. But that is not the only style or the healthiest style of parenting that exists. Nick's mom is more Authoritative which is a significantly healthier style of parenting. Or at the very least it creates more emotionally stable adults compared to Authoritarian.

@@AnxietyRat it’s hard to know how we would react when we haven’t been through it, but yes Charlie’s mum is definitely an authoritive parent whereas his dad is just doing what any other dad does and goes along with the mother, that’s certainly how my dad was, I never had anyone over for sleepovers at that age, I wasn’t out until my early 20s, but now I think about it my parents probably would have been ok, they would have just been happy that I had a friend over!

@@garyevans1984 yeah, I don't know I came out when I was 13 and from a very young age I've always been very sex-positive and so I don't really give a fuck if my kids would be having sex as long as they were doing so safely. Like saying no sleepovers ...keep the door open... I wouldn't do that. Ever. Even teens deserve privacy. It's not who I am as a person or who I would be as a parent so I know EXACTLY how I would react if my 15/16 year old(which is how old Nick and Charlie are) got into a relationship as long as they were using condoms, dental dams, and lube... I don't really give a fuck what they're doing consensually. And guess what teenagers have a sex drive and so they're usually going to want to have sex and there's nothing wrong with that... Trying to control your child's behaviour isn't a healthy thing to do and that's what Charlie's mom is trying to do. She also unfortunately has a misunderstanding of what mental health disorders are and so that causes even more conflict when Charlie is struggling even more in the next season/book.... But yeah I can understand when the parents put some restrictions on them seeing each other because Charlie is grades were slipping... I can understand that. I think the punishment was a little bit too severe but I can understand why they did it because his grades. But also as someone who is VERY mentally ill in high school and my grades absolutely suffered because of my mental illness ...Charlie's grades might actually be suffering due to the undiagnosed mental illnesses that he has. It doesn't necessarily have everything to do with the fact that Charlie is hanging out with Nick more but that is what the parents of focused on because it's the only significant change that they understand is happening in Charlie's life... Still doesn't mean that it was the right thing to do.... And so that's why the punishment surrounds him being able to see Nick. But amputating your child social life also causes loneliness it can actually make the mental health disorders even worse, which it does for Charlie, and did for me as a teen. My parents would take away electronics when I would skip classes which was essentially amputating my social life outside of school. The cutting off of social life also didn't really work for me... it didn't make me go to school or do my assignments because my mental illness was controlling my life. Like Charlie's does later on. I feel like we can acknowledge why Charlie's parents are reacting the way that they are but we can also acknowledged that how they're reacting ISN'T correct because they don't have all of the information to correctly assess the situation and create an appropriate punishment that might actually work. The punishments they've landed on are just going to cause conflict and resentment and anger and kind of make Charlie's mental health state worse. It's exactly what happened in my own life experience and is what happens in the comics. 🤷‍♀️ But I do agree that Charlie's dad is fine. Actually agreed with the partial cutting off of Charlie seeing Nick so that Charlie could focus a little bit more on his school work but still also have a social life and connection with Nick....Charlie's dad reminds me a lot of my own dad. Passive but ultimately supportive. He's fine. It's mainly Charlie's mom that I have an issue with she's very similar to my own mother personality wise.

I think the main problem people had with it was just how cold and confused their reaction was. Like obviously, as parents they can set the rules but they could just pretend to be happy for him rather than look at him with fear in their eyes

8:02 -- the eating disorder subplot was notable across the first season (if you go back and note how many times he actually wouldn't eat in various scenes but only move his food around/leave it uneaten, or decline eating when offered food though others were eating, etc, with just a single exception-scene when he was waxing stronger so was eating with everyone else at the milkshake date).

13:56 I did! 😂 I used to have a rule that I'd never date someone from my school so I only dated people from nearby schools. There was a guy who went to school with my neighbour and I had the biggest crush on him and we eventually ended up dating but when school started again he was on work experience as part of our technicians team in school. I felt like the biggest rebel sneaking around with him in school 😂 (he was 16 coming 17 and eventhough he was only there on work experience for 2 weeks I felt sooo devious technically dating a member of staff 🤣). Honestly, I wouldn't be so hard on Charlie's mom. I mean, she is right that Charlie is distracted from coursework because of Nick but also we need to take into account Charlie's background, especially with things we learn later in the season (but learned earlier in the comics). She's just very protective- but admittedly not done justice this season as much. I hope the show pulls an Imogen and fleshes her character out next season. (Mr. Farouk, however, is an icon throughout the series- I love him so much)
