Out of all the parents, I think it’s Tao’s mum who is the most accepting and lovely out of them all. She would have known Elle from before her transition, from when she was at the boys school. And her excitement at the relationship between Elle and Tao I’d beautiful. She can’t wait to tell the aunties all the news and gossip. I love her.

I feel like you can tell on Ben's face that he didn't realize that what he had been doing was so bad because when Charlie asks him about their first kiss, Ben smiles, he thinks of it as a fond memory. He never realized he was so toxic. There are totally men like that who exert power over people without really realizing and never pondering how it affects the other person.

Given the parent's day scene, not to stereotype, but I'm almost certain he never had a healthy relationship modeled for him at home, so that kind of control seemed normal (not to stereotype, but Mr. Hope smellt like Brexit. So many mixed emotions here! I believe Ben does recognize he is toxic to Charlie on the multiple occasions because after each one, he offers his lame apology and believes he truly has apologized to Charlie until during their study hall time Nick forces him to better see how much he hurt Charlie I, too, felt bad for Ben during his sincere apology at Lambert, but if he was truly truly regretful he would not still be acting like a douchebag. Actions will always speak louder than words. In real life, people will tell you and show you who they really are. Bash seems like a lovely human being and it would have been amazing to see Ben really turn around. For me, I’m sad and a bit scared for the Ben character because he is in such a dark place and literally has not one person in his corner. Hopefully, he really does see how rotten he has been and does make better decisions moving forward……especially now that he sees just how happy he could be. I understand he has an unsupportive home life but that doesn’t give him the right to be so nasty to people. That’s the part that is unforgivable. That’s why Charlie has no forgiveness for Ben. If Ben’s parents can’t accept and love him for who he truly is, maybe they are who he needs to walk away from until they can….if that’s even possible. FAMILY is not always who you’re born into. Seek out and find the right people and surround yourself with them. 💛💙.

Fun fact: right after Tori kicks David’s phone out of his hand and threatens him should he be a dick again, there’s a little crunch sound as she walks down the stairs. That’s because in the comic, she specifically steps on and cracks David’s phone screen with her combat boots as she walks down the stairs. Same thing happened here in the show, they just don’t visually show it happening.

I've said this like 10+ times. The language of "promise me to tell me if it ever gets that bad again" instead of "promise me you'll stop" or "stop for me" I've had people tell me "stop for me" and when I did eventually slip up it was worse bc I let people down. The language that they used is absolutely amazing. Because somewhere there's a kid who needs to know that it's ok. It's ok not to be ok and this show captures that so so well. I love this show so much
@Cr0ut0n

Agree 100%, my parents did the "promise me you'll never hurt yourself again" thing and I didn't feel supported so much as that I needed to take care of their feelings. @@pinksenshi9690 I'm a huge believer that Alice made this as a hope that it's what school can be like in the future. It handles hard and dark topics like it's nothing to be ashamed of. It's really not anything to be ashamed of. It shows that it's ok to not be ok. It shows somewhat how to see the signs that someones not ok. It shows what shows need. While it may not be realistic it's a show that we can all escape to. A show that gives queer youth a hope that it does get better. A show that says even if you are struggling or have struggled in the past whether it be a bad home life, an ED, a past of SH, figuring out your sexuality it shows that you can be happy. That you can recover that it does get better. I'm probably off the original topic but eh whatever. This show will show a young kid that they aren't unnatural that they arnt something to be afraid of that they are human they aren't scary. And idk this show and Alice and the producers and director and all of the cast and crew have done something amazing. And I know that's as a long tangent 😭😭 sorry 😭

It really killed me because it reminded me of my own home life honestly. I've come home from work and sat in my car for 15 minutes in front of my house cause I didn't want to go in. To have a show depict a physical manifestation of a toxic home life in that way, it was a bit like finding the words to describe something I didn't understand (honestly a bit like Isaac's talk with the aroace artist). Like, I've /seen/ that dark cloud coming out of my house before.

i like that we got to see darcy’s family situation & it also gave us a parallel between the difference in attitudes with how you want to act even when your family situation is bad: darcy & ben have the same type of family situation (from what i understood) and they both have handled it in completely different ways. darcy stays her caring, happy self whereas ben is manipulative
@n0emiette
@n0emiette Жыл бұрын
But the thing is, that is just 1 factor. Darcy ends up separating herself in two, and has a support system with her friends with whom she can be herself. Ben doesnt, they even show how more and more isolated he is through the season. It doesnt justify his actions in any way and I think the show has done a very good job on that matter. But the psyche of people is influenced by more than one factor. And regardless of the behavior this generate, no queer 16 year olds should have to grow up in a family they do not feel safe in

There is no reason that Darcy couldn't have gone the way of Ben. @@KittyKatTube [disclaimer, i will only continue this discussion if you genuinely want to have that discussion in a polite way, accepting not everyone sees things the same. If you just want to fight and insult, let's stop the convo right there] Choosing requires having multiple choices. I dont see where is the choice of support. He definitely doesnt have it at home, and his group of friend is shit (and we see him isolate himself more and more in this season. So he isnt even close to this group of friends ) And as I explained it in my previous comment, that is what separates Ben and Darcy. Darcy has support at school. She has known Tara for 5 years before they got together, they both have friends at Higgs who knew about their relationship so who are supportive. Ben has the group of Harry and the other boys who laugh at Harry's homophobic bullying. Doesnt mean it excuses his behavior, I'm strictly talking about why the Ben and Darcy comparaisons are way more complicated that people make it out to be. There is also the difference with the parents. We know that Darcy's mum is abusive regardless of her kid's sexuality. "Nothing I ever do is good enough for her". Even without being out, her mum is horrible. Ben seems to have an ok relationship with his parents but fears how it would switch if they found out he's queer, that his parents could become abusive. While Darcy has a horrible home life, she doesnt live with that fear of the if, she lives it. Which is horrible, but that difference has a huge impact on behaviors. I think people underestimate how much you can become self centered when you are hurt or scared and how much you can become oblivious to the hurt you are causing to others. It's not acting dumb, these are just very strong emotions that can take full control of your brain. I am not talking about the assault of course, but for the rest, I really think he was so caught up in his fear that he did not realize how his toxic behavior was affecting Charlie. And we clearly see it in the last scene, when Charlie mentions their first kiss and he smiles. And then Charlie talks about this event from his perspective and it feels like a ton of bricks dropped on Ben because he had not truly stopped to consider how it all affected Charlie, and how deeply. For me, this realization that the key element that was missing for Ben to really start evolving (even though his apology was genuine. He was still acting self centered, only considering his feelings) I didnt take him turning his back on the rainbow wave as him turning his back on the community and continuing on his destructive path. I would have assumed that if he had recoiled from the wave and immediatly run away, but he didnt. He thought about it. But it was just not where he was at yet. He still has a lot of thinking to do about himself before he is able to join the community without hurting anyone else. So no I dont think he will "hurt a lot more people along the way" like you said but yes he has a long personal journey ahead of him [And from Alice's words, he will get better in the future]
@KittyKatTube
@KittyKatTube Жыл бұрын
@n0emiette i love a discussion not sure if you got a bad vibe from my comment but your brackets were intense. Maybe I misread your comment or missed something on the show but my understanding is that Darcys mom doesn't know she is a lesbian either. So her situation seems even more challenging than Ben. Ben has an if whereas darcy has a definitely not. I could be wrong but that was my understanding from watching the show. Either way that's really not important. Trauma isn't a sport. I just wanted to comment more on how I think the show did a great job of paralleling Ben with the other characters as they grew to accept themselves and find joy while he stayed so unhappy. When I say Ben has support I mean he has options. Maybe he can't turn to his friends or turn to his parents but he could have turned to Charlie. Heck he did turn to Charlie. He had charlie to support him but he pushed him away in the rudest assaultiest way possible. He had Imogen who he knew was friends with Charlie and his group so logically he knows that she would be supportive. He had the art teacher who everyone seemed to know was queer and who charlie turned to often. I feel bad for Ben. He's just a kid. But that doesn't mean he's not a jerk. That last scene wasn't his first chance to make an effort but he never did before. He always chose to lash out. Even after being told to his face multiple times he was being awful. To me this means he is not ready to face that part of himself. Which is very sad for him. Unfortunately not facing your reality will result in him continuing to hide his relationship or date people he doesn't like and what's even worse is he will probably keep being rude about it. Knowingly hurting someone is not a good thing to do and he is a repeat offender. I just say all this because it's my understanding Ben's character won't be on the show anymore and so I think this ending was a great send off saying that Ben isn't ready for what this show represents. He has his own journey but it is not one of queer acceptance. Not yet

These are kids, and although I give props for Darcy still staying strong, I can’t entirely blame Ben for being beaten down and having a hard time getting out of the realty that his parents have created around him. Seems like this whole situation with Charlie and Nick is providing the mirror he needed; and even then (with the rainbow extending towards him) it’s not enough and you see how ingrained his learned hatred for himself is 😔. Imogen is a bit dense but I think Sahar is too harsh to her. I think that little bit of the ‘we were friends but you stopped texting me’ was very telling. I have a feeling Sahar was into Imogen but once Imogen dated a guy (Nick, even though that was all in her mind, or someone before him?) she was hurt and couldn’t remain friends with Imogen. I think Imogen was telling the truth… Sahar stopped texting her. Now that Sahar has (bluntly) come out to Imogen, she sees that maybe there always was something there for her, too. And we saw a glimpse of them sleeping together cuddling in Paris… I know girls can be more comfortable being platonically close and intimate, but we’ve been given clues that something was brewing almost since Sahar was introduced in the show.

Watching Darcy's storyline with her Mum was so heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. As a lesbian whose mum kicked her out for being gay and not meeting her idea of the perfect daughter, seeing the group support her was so beautiful. ❤

There are some moments when I get into a little stress spiral of "OH NO, WHAT IF THEY ACTUALLY HAVE CHARLIE SEND THAT TEXT?!?!" because I want *that* scene so much and I would also hate if he said it for the first time over text ***COMIC SPOILERS**** Then I remember that there is a moment after David is a dick where Charlie types out that text and then deletes it and starts googling "how to tell someone you love them" instead. So I figure that this is just a slight rework of the material, and season 3 will start with Charlie googling 🤞🤞🤞

Yes and also, some people might say that having a group of friends with that many lgbtq+ members is unrealistic but it's actually not a stretch from reality because in real life, queer people tend to gravitate towards each other which is normal and not just for queer people but for people in general. Most people would surround themselves with people who have similar interests and experiences. That's just a human thing to do and the fact that there is a lot of queer characters in this show doesn't imply that the whole school is queer but this show centers on the different representations of lgbtq+ people and their struggles as teenagers so obviously there is a lot of these characters because that's the whole point of this show ! (I used the word "people" way too much in this comment but I hope it still makes sense😅)

I just love seeing this queer friend group out and happy like we didn't have the chance at the time 🥲

@@letsmadi7577 Yes exactly, that's what I was trying to say, obviously not the entire two schools are queer, far from that, but the show focuses on queer characters. When Nick opens his eyes to see Charlie in is cute tux, the globe is now illuminated. It’s like a subtle of saying “Charlie lights up his whole world”. I’m losing my composure just typing this! Brad's assessment of Ben's apology was perfection. Everyone piling on Ben all the time makes me a little sad. I know he's horrible, but it's pretty clear, even in season 1, that he has tons of internalized homophobia. But it is spot on that it doesn't excuse his behavior. I've seen all the reactions you've done to series and movies and I literally love Heartstopper's. As someone from the LGBTQ+ community, you not only make comments that make me cry with laughter, but you also highlight the most significant elements of this beautiful series, the happy, cute, sad and even angry ones. Because we have all seen ourselves in some of the situations that this show presents. I have no doubt that these last two chapters are the densest in terms of emotions and issues related to who we are queer people, which is why there is so much passion around Heartstopper. For this reason, I applaud this installment because although you did not cry, it was noticeable how everything that happened affected you. And to those who find this show idealistic or too cringy, it's because they don't understand how important it is to represent who we are queer in a positive and profound way. Thanks Brad.

In my mind until the 3rd season comes out the ending was like this. Charlie sends it, then Charlie sees Nick read it. A few seconds pass and Charlie’s face is just about to look worried and Nick comes busting through the front door runs to him picks him up and yells I love you too. Then they share a passionate kiss which pans to Olivia Coleman and David watching them at the front door and she says something like “How can you have a problem with something so beautiful”. And David just puts his head down in shame. That’s my perfect ending to that scene.

💯 agree with your final comments. season 2 took it to the next level and made me rewatch each season twice. Plus greater appreciation for the music and the maturity of the actors in their interviews. It's pure joy to watch, coming from a 40 something year old straight woman!

I didn't cry the first time I watched it either, but then I never really cry at anything lol. This go around however, I did tear up a bit when Isaac was talking to the other aro/ace person at the event. When they said "Freedom" and it cut to Isaac and the leaves...Just his expression and everything got me as another ace person. It's such an amazing storyline and such an important one to include! This whole show is just fucking amazing. Thank you for sharing your journey with us!!

13:45 Brad's reaction to Ben's apology and the the switch when Charlie responded. 13:55 the reaction and then the edit in response 😂 and "tears back in." Brilliant!

The dinner scene was straight from the book and was ICONIC! The only thing I wish they had done was Charlies dad telling Nick that he handled that well.

Guuurl I agree with you 100% These last two episodes were cram packed with deep trauma moments, some I personally have experienced which was tough. Sure some of it is cringe, but mainly cause we aren't there yet with the whole acceptance thing. ... sigh ... one day. 😁 But I agree that nobody should be going after those who love this show. We need more shows like this, that shows inclusivity, acceptance and normality. 💖

Charlie and Nick looked so cute in their Prom Outfits. Also, the dancing was improv.

Fun fact the band playing at prom are actually Baby Queen and her band, a lot of her songs were included on the soundtrack last season, and the song used on the last episode when nick comes out on Instagram its a song she wrote specifically for nick and charlie.

I love the show. I honestly don't understand how anyone wouldn't, especially members of the LGBT+ community. I've seen people say that it's "sanitized" or "not realistic," and criticize the lack of sex and stuff, because "teenagers don't really act like that," but I feel like that's actually kind of the point.... It's soooo nice to see a cute and endearing relationship blossom between young people (particularly Nick and Charlie, but everyone else as well). There's such an emphasis on sex in most media, and while sex is great, healthy relationships can't be based on raw passion and sex alone.... A lot of young people feel pressured into sex before they're actually ready (I sure was, and started having sex years before I was actually comfortable with it), and it's so nice to see such sweet and wholesome relationships on-screen... Especially between queer characters! It's clearly a fantasy world, where consent and true intimacy reign supreme, but it could be a new reality, because I really think it shows the young people of today that sex isn't everything, and there's so many other important things in relationships. I wish I had this show 15 years ago!
