I cut my pinkie toe. the machine kinda grinded up the skin of my toe. They had to carry to me back to the room to patch me up. This raises another interesting discussion: In my opinion, causal workout machines that replace normal actions like walking and biking are an incredibly American way of staying fit. The reason so many people are unhealthy and never seem to resolve to get better is pretty much entirely because everything you use to get everywhere is a car. I find it almost amusing how much culture is dedicated to slandering both the annoyance of exercise and traffic, yet no group large enough has come to a solid consensus to eliminate both the problems by just building new things closer and safer for pedestrians so you can finally walk there.

@xxXthekevXxx7 жыл бұрын
Modern treadmills actually require power for them to move, so they’re possibly using more power than the tv...
@wesker69087 жыл бұрын
Why not a similar device that was used in 1800? I'm pretty sure there's a way to generate power without using power to power the treadmill. or use the cycling thing for power
@MetalSandman9995 жыл бұрын
Power-generating stationary bikes do exist, but the amount of electricity they produce is so minimal that it is barely worth any additional cost or effort. I've seen estimates of average production being around 100 watt/hours. Badically, you can produce enough electricity to power a lightbulb for the duration of your exercise. The energy savings would be measured cents (not dollars) per month. When people talk about electricity being expensive, what they really mean is that you need a large amount of electricity to power all the devices people in developed countries use in their homes, so therefore you have to pay a lot of money. Electricity itself is relatively cheap. It's not like gold where a small amount of it is worth a lot of money.

There is a video on KZbin, I’m struggling to remember the name, “cyclist makes toast” or something along those lines. A normal person will put out 100-150W over an hour, a trained cyclist can do 200W for an hour, a larger professional cyclist might be able to put out 400W for an hour, but one half of a toaster requires 700W of electricity. Sadly, I don’t think most people would be able to power the TV they watch.

I would like to see a reference for treadmills being used to power windmills and that being why treadmills were so named. A "mill" is a machine that rotates and a windmill is a machine that rotates when the wind pushes it. A treadmill is something that rotates when a person or animal treads (or walks) on it. They may have been used in British prisons in the 1800s but they were around in Roman times and never disappeared completely.

So those bastards for free energy. I can only imagine how many innocents were thrust into the prison just to keep the numbers.

@@ImNotJoshPotter during this time people could very easily sent to prison without really committing a crime, if a rich person didn't like them

@@millennialdisposition Yeah a lot like today. But that's for other reasons than building up hamster wheel energy. But yes, even now if the powerful don't like you they will make up a reason to take you down.

I'm no expert so please, no hate, but I can't for the life of me understand why someone would choose to run in a single spot on a treadmill over running outside (apart from when it's raining of course)

+morethejamesx39 The only people I know who have treadmills only use them when its raining and during the winter when its too cold outside.

Why are they showing Windmills (ex at 1:44) when they are talking about powering mills? Windmill blades is powered by the wind, not by some other power source. This really confuses people into thinking that windmills or wind turbines blades move because they are powered by electricity or something. When they are referring to ''mills', the picture should be of mechanical operations of turning gears.

I don't understand why people don't run in the fresh air to even release more stress. It's best for the human mind.

Because it may below zero outside, ice covering the ground, severe thunderstorms, someone may live in a very dangerous part of town, or an infant taking a nap in the next room so you can't just leave, etc. Lots of reasons.

They do, it depends on where they live. Some places don't have areas where running is possible

The treadmill plan definitely needs work, but I agree with healthy and productive prisoners. It's interesting how creative the prisons were.

It would seem like prisoners who litterally spend 42 hours per week on treadmills would be able to outrun the guards pretty easy if they escaped.
