"It's like bringing an intercontinental ballistic missile to a knife fight" is the best metaphor of Supra HV-R. The chase for efficiency and durability is one of the most interesting aspect of endurance racing. I remember when diesel engines was the best engine to beat in primary class of endurance racing. But when hybrid starts showing its potential, there is no looking back
@camryt Жыл бұрын
That was mostly because diesel LMP cars were allowed to use bigger fuel tanks
@K9RacingAndStuff Жыл бұрын
@@camryt that was only for 2006 (which really was a stupid decision from the ACO, given their previous ability to compensate for fuel energy density with tank sizes; see the Nasamax LMP1 that ran on E100) When the ACO fixed that, nobody was really building a great petrol LMP1 from the ground up, and the Toyota was genuinely the first petrol car that wasn't over two seconds a lap slower than the Audis on race pace alone at Le Mans.
@AbrahamArthemius Жыл бұрын
@@K9RacingAndStuff I can remember how the TS030 just shot through the Mulsanne straight overtaking one of the Audi. Considering how Toyota was forced to enter the class one year early because of Peugeot's sudden leave, it's done pretty good (although they eventually retire because of incidents)
@K9RacingAndStuff Жыл бұрын
@@AbrahamArthemius Which is incredible considering the nature of development in motorsports and the nightmare that was the Porsche 919 development. Shame the 2013 car was just an utter disappointment imo; Toyota talked themselves up that year and has a very promising Spa, only to be even further behind at Le Mans than they were with the debut car. But that's my point; the Toyota was the first _good_ petrol LMP1 car to race against the Audis that itself wasn't an Audi (or basically an Audi) since Audi's debut.

Speaking of the Prius, we don't see the car coming to the motorsport world until 2010s where it entered Super GT's GT300 class and also use the Hybrid system, and quickly became fan favorite there. This particular Prius (and all its iterations until the last year of operations) is basically one of the "be careful of who you call ugly in middle school" cars for this reason, given how panned the Prius was by the automotive world back then. Will definitely miss that car. It's crazy to think Supra HV-R would start Toyota's successful hybrid campaigns, especially looking at how well the technology worked.
@Tyindel Жыл бұрын
yeah that prius was a monster, pretty sure it used a similar setup to the supra with 2 small low powered electric motors and a super capacitor but went through a few engines, including the 3UZ from the GT500 cars and the TS030's V8. complete spaceframe chassis, mid engined, rear wheel drive and bonkers. There was also a CR-Z with a similar hybrid set up and the engine from Honda's Superformula car. more modern rules forced the prius to become front engined in i think 2017 (the honda was retired before the change happened) but i think it kept the v8. If it wasn't able to pull away from GT3 cars then it likely would still be racing as the supercar manufucturers were rightly annoyed that their cars were being beaten by a prius

It's a genuine bummer the Prius was retired last year and is now replaced. The same team now has a Lexus i believe. Never forget the Prius!

@Rendy Andrian Y ah damn. Didn't know they had to retire it due to the supply issues caused by the war. It's such a wonderful car and one of those amazingly absurd one off's that worked (like the purgeot 806 van that raced the spa 24h in the 90s as a supertourer) I'll miss the thing and really hope that we see it back in some form eventually

Oh how I wish SuperGT never went away from the 05-08 spec of GT500 when the base chassis and engine were unique. The Nissan GT-R was allowed to run the 09 specification alongside the Toyota-Lexus SC430s and Honda NSX-GTs which were evolved 07 cars. Sure, they inherited nothing from the road cars except for the main cabin, but they were distinct in their performance characteristics. The mythical Supra HV-R should have been the benchmark test car for GT500 if it ever went down the hybrid powertrain route.

Amazing what Toyota can do from a crazy idea. This innovations and experimental stuff now reflects in all the success of Toyota Gazoo Racing in motorsport (and their road cars too). No matters if is WRC, WEC, rally raids or whatever, they win and that's it. And now they are doing exactly the same with the hydrogen powered Corollas in the Super Taikyu series (oh, what a coincidence).

Toyota really pioneered the use of supercapacitors for a hybrid system instead of batteries, and we will now see supercapacitors in the IndyCar series in the upcoming 2024 season with its very compact hybrid system designed to fit inside the existing drivetrain design. It is mentioned that the system is capable of deploying a maximum of 150 horsepower, so it's similar to the HV-R for just rear wheels. Right now in the postseason, the system is currently being tested for optimization and driveability

As always, great video Stijn and thank you for the insight! These videos give me a lot more context when watching races, and thus make it a lot more interesting :) Also as a petrolhead with an r33 skyline, I really think the hate for the Prius came not from the car itself but from the people driving them. You had hollywood celebrities driving them just to give themselves a pat on the back, and early prius adapters felt smug and better than the average car owner (South Park also made a parody of this). The Prius itself is a very interesting car, and it's amazing how reliable they are considering the complex hybrid system. I've seen Priuses with over 400.000 km on the clock, and they're still running like a dream with almost no issues during their lifespan.

Think what you want but for me the hybrids destroy real racing. It’s just to easy to use and build these days! No technical finesse in it at all! To me and many others today’s hybrids destroy the spirit of racing! I want back to the diesel era of Le Mans, bio diesel is the power of the future! It grows on fields and is unbelievably cheap! You could raise and distill it on your own! But stupid politicians ruined it (and the whole worlds ecosystem) like always and demanded the use of highly toxic and dangerous lithium ion batteries who kill the environment and exploit third world countries. Despicable like always! Biodiesel is the future but unfortunately it’s completely suppressed by the governments and industries around the world, since farmers would produce it and not those greedy managers! Despicable!
