Incorrect about the final drive ratio. The then-current touring car was already capable of around 280km/h and the Le Mans car was to be fitted with the taller "moonshot" diff (around 2.6 or 2.7 to one, if I remember correctly) which, with the car's aero kit, would have given it a top speed of over 300km/h. Also, I believe it was based upon the VC Commodore, not the VB.

I like how you find, then bring us so many obscure motorsport stories out there! I can't wait for you to bring them all to us! Great work, I saw a couple more of your videos & that made me subscribe to your channel! Since Toyota pioneered the use of supercapacitors for a hybrid system instead of batteries, and we will now see supercapacitors in the IndyCar series in the upcoming 2025 season with its very compact hybrid system then I hope they will bring this racing development to their street cars soon!

How could I forget about it when I never 'got' it in the first place? I would have remembered if I had ever heard anything about Mazda winning eight times at Le Mans! thanks for teaching all of us car fanatics all this great in-depth information! you must have done quite a bit of research! If Rotary engines aren't banned, then why don't they race them anymore? Is Le Mans, or the FIA afraid that they will win the overall 24 hours again?

I love the idea of homologating street cars before they are allowed to race, it gives us the buying public better cars! It makes their race cars, competition, technology, et cetera so much more interesting and Road Relevant! And hopefully all that R&D from racing will trickle down into their road cars! It's a pity that the major OEM car Manufacturers have decided to not apply the R&D to the future Road. car development but instead twist the system to work against itself! How do we the car fanatics turn the homologation system back around so that we can get better road going cars to buy?

i love Dale so much so dont get my comment twisted but he did a lot of stuff that was really bad for racing and it just gets overlooked until you study his death. dale pretty much hated safety. he refused to wear closed face helmets and talked down about them. he hated newer harnesses and seat design that he felt limited his movement and talked bad about them(like the HANS). he always had the harnesses in his car mounted in strange ways that made them "more comfortable". so many more things i could go on about. its a strange dark side to him that even Dale Jr has spoken about before. I hate when people write it off as being "old fashioned". i know a lot of people that are old fashioned that still value safety and innovation.

To be fair the viper was a bit over classed. By a lot. Just looking at the 1999 entry list. The competition made up of honda civics and volks wagon golfs, one with a 1.8 TDI. Someone even bought a beetle. The fastest stuff on the track were Porsche 911s and then followed by the m3s.

Good documentary about the Viper ! But just a few thoughts: Instead of portraying the Viper as a victim of regulations, you can turn the whole thing around - and maybe still be right. The Viper with its 8 litre engine was wrongly designed from the start to take part in races outside the USA - where a large displacement is considered good form. The Viper had no chance against the real FIA GT GT1s that ran from 1996 onwards - why should it ? From then on it consistently drove in the GT2 outside of real competition. With Oreca's million-dollar budget, the matter was clear in the FIA GT 1997/1998 and in the ALMS 1999/2000. When other bigger displacement cars - Lister, Marcos in FIA GT and Corvette in the ALMS - joined in 2000/2001, things got more interesting again. At the Nürburgring, the Viper was simply tolerated for too long because Zakowski is a clever man and has a good reputation and influence. And the fans loved the Viper. But in fact, the Viper had no business being there. Good races are always built around good regulations. That's why today's GT3 races are so good. Different teams, driving cars from different manufacturers, keep winning. Dodge/Chrysler didn't get this from the start, or rather benefited from the fact that there was practically no BOP before 2006. The "Viper Competition Coupe" that took part in the GT3 back then was a good car, but not a high-flyer, which proves my point - or not?

A lot of inaccurate information here. Firstly, it was Bob Forbes that was behind the whole thing. The car was never built, however a lightweight shell was. When the Lemans deal never got the money needed, Bob Forbes completed the build of the shell and the car was raced in the Australian Group C category. Although the Commodore rated in the Australian Group C category fitted with a 308- 5 litre Holden V8, it was proposed at Lemans it would run a twin turbo 253- 4.2 litre Holden V8 as this placed the car in category with similar cars. The engine was being developed by Normalair-Garret and illustrations and mock-up photos as shown were designed by Leo Pruneau who was head designer at Holden at the time.

TBH, after being ferried around in an R5 for many years in my youth, I'm not surprised that it made a successful RallyRaid car. The suspension on those things was legendarily strong and compliant, and the R5 was damn reliable too. My mother's example ran over several concrete blocks (deposited on the road from a skip of construction debris) at speed, and the only damage to the car was a destroyed front fog light and a dented rim. The tire didn't even lose air. The R5 may not've looked like much, but it was a tough little b4$t4rd!

Gonna be a very annoying nerd here (sorry in advance): iRacing had a glitch where if you had more than 255 incident count for a race it would loop back to 0, meaning that for the first time slot if anyone went off the track or hit another driver they would be immediately disqualified, it wasn't that they forgot for the second time slot they had to disable it because otherwise everyone would get DQ'd 😅

Anything mentioned after 787B in this video is just enough to defeat the "rotaries are banned" allegations thrown by... well, some "mainstream". Kinda sad that Mazda didn't capitalize off of the LMDh regulations, they exited IMSA when this ruleset is being introduced, but I just hope that they would cook once more especially knowing that rotary engines are referenced in the sporting regulations, though I wonder which team would be interested in running it...
