One of the things I love about Russell is his rare ability to translate his own complex thoughts aloud ON THE GO into sentences that are as lengthy as they need to be and yet are still **beautifully constructed.** There simply aren't many people who can do this while remaining as present and responsive as he does.

A man sat alone drenched deep in sadness. All the animals drew near to him and asked: “We don’t like to see you so sad. Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it.” The man said: “I want to have a good eyesight.” The vulture replied: “You’ll have mine.” The man said: “I want to be strong.” The jaguar replied: “You’ll be as strong as me.” Then the man said: “I long to know the secrets of the earth.” The snake replied: “I’ll show them to you.” And so it went with all the animals and when man had all the gifts that they could give, he left. Then the owl said to the other animals: “Now the man knows much and he can do many things. Suddenly I am afraid.” The deer said: “The man has all that he needs. Now his sadness will stop.” But the owl replied: “No. I have seen a hole in the man deep like a hunger he can never fill. That’s what makes him sad and makes him want. He’ll keep on taking and taking until one day the earth will say: ‘I am no more and I have nothing left to give’.”

I enjoyed this but some points were far too idealistic. For example the Pizzeria that is so successful in the town it shares the recipe with the next town, it is still putting all other Pizza makers out of business in that area. So any one who wants to make Pizza doesn't get a look in unless they can grow the same popularity. That leads to many people doing work they don't want to do. And if they don't want to do it, isn't their labour being exploited by whoever else they end up working for? Still it is better than a corp situation.

After youtube launched, I saw evidence of this being a Renaissance period. With youtube, musicians everywhere started putting their music out there. This made me realize how much more accessible musical gear is than it used to be. Partnered with sound tech, a person can produce their own music and do it with a very professional touch. Then came the creative videos and independent animations that produced cult followings and excellent entertainment like Red v Blue. After that, came a tidal wave of DIY tutorials in which virtually ( pun intended) every craft and skill known to humans could be found and learnt. This doesn't even include the foodie movement, which ignited the artistic and creative side of all areas of food. Or how many people have now written books and self published. And the soulutionists are showing up too. Those who have novel and efficient ways to solve BIG problems. When I thought about it, I wondered at the number of people crafting and writing and singing and designing and gardening and filming and protesting and organizing and ted talking and breathing art into this realm, all those who we never see on the web or TV and it struck me then (about 5 yrs ago) that we are in the midst of a Renaissance and we don't even know it. But, we're starting to know it and that in itself is a novel and historical paradigm, to see these enormous waves of change whilst simultaneously being swept up in it. That is very present and that is why I say, we're becoming Surfers of reality. I feel very optimistic!

I'll admit my visceral reaction to sharing a lawn mower with my block was "Oh god no!!!" I actively avoid half the people on my block...now I have to schedule my yard maintenance with them? What happens when the lawn mower breaks down? Who pays for it? What if someone let's the mud cake up on the blades and doesn't clean it? We can't even get people to clean up after themselves in the break room at work! Humans are messy, complicated, and sometimes unbelievably frustrating to deal with. It makes sense that we have retreated into our individual lives. And we are losing the skills needed to deal with each other. It's a self perpetuating cycle.

Nice to know there are humans who get the bigger picture to which the state of our world and humanity is at right now. I am fortunate enough to be in awe every day....from the dogs, to art, dancing and remaining childlike. Often, though as many ppl fear deep connection....it is more solo than I would wish for. @@kaylaboone1460 Thank you, Kayla for your comments. I think one of the biggest take aways of this conversation between Russell and Douglas for me is the fact that learning comes from patterns. Once I began to be so intune to each individual dog's response to different types of approaches to dealing with their fear or anxiety with the grooming procedure I was able to understand whom I needed to be in each moment of the process - one that is entirely unnatural and can cause trauma and PTSD if both our coping mechanisms are not where they need to be. After, nearly 30 years it all becomes about feeling those patterns......and understanding what they are saying.....it all starts in the gut...travels up the vagas nerve and to our brain. The Amygdala is where it's at. Sometimes I'm the alpha, sometimes I'm the coach and cheerleader....sometimes I need to chant and call them little Buddhas soothingly as it can be very calming. Sometimes I even kiss their ass but only for a bit!! LOL :P It's had to put into words other than a transference of energy. The more courageous, grounded and confident I am I give that feeling to them and they in return give it back to me tenfold as they get braver as they FEEL I am on their side. I liken my role as the mother dog, She -wolf or even DOG-MA (LOL - love that one as its very puny, funny and fitting!)......a friend called me so dogmatic and instead of reacting to it as an insult I learned from it and really.....makes sense!!! Honestly, the most difficult dogs to groom are the wiggly dogs......they are stupid-brave, have rules of their own, will never bite.....just won't stay still and don't understand the dangers of being wiggly. They do frustrate me more but I have come to understand it's do to the fact......I have the very same personality!!!! And we typically clash with our own likeness!! It comes with stubborness which truly is relentless Dogged Determination!!!! Always with safety first.....mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. I have learned so much....as my world revolves around, fight, flight, avoidance.....and submission (I do not want dogs in that state as it can hinder there grounding...I will allow if they go there due to trust and even laziness!! LOL)......The Avoidance stage is where everything happens.....you are either in the drivers seat or being driven. It's the only state that's not static...it has wiggle room....thus, I call it The Dance!!!! That's where the magic takes place. I ignore fear and anxiety thus it takes its power away. I still get amazed by it!!!!! I have tried to write a book about all the amazing, profound and comforting things I've learned from my dog gurus but for me a speaking Think Tank type of path would suit me better. Like a Ted Talk.....I'm a talker for sure!!! I'm sure I could use KZbin as well.....but I am Old School and live quite simple so inspiring ppl in small doses works for me!!! If you'd like to know more about any kind of psychology....I can give you my spin on things. I only have a Dog-gree in it after all and no signed Dog-torate but animals don't care about paperwork and really......I don't think we should so much either!! LOL :P :p I wish you joy, acceptance and understanding on your journey.....and yes - fill it with passion and enthusiasm!!!!!!!!! xoxo :)

I've just started to watch Under The Skin. Really enjoying what you're talking about and discussing. I think it has started me to question my views and reasoning. The idea of us all helping each other is of course a great idea, albeit somewhat utopian. As a newbie to this type of thinking I'm stuck with the what seems to me to be an insurmountable problem. A person works hard producing the goods he needs to either use or sell or barter to provide for his family. The person next door would rather sit on his porch playing his guitar in the knowledge that there's probably enough goods made by his neighbour and others in his village to let him beg, borrow or steal to survive. How do you think it is possible to engender the idea of everyone chipping in rather than the system we have at present where it's everyone for themselves. I'll keep listening and try to gain a better perspective of these ideas. Thanks for your work.

For the past 8 years I’ve been preaching to those I care about how we don’t need to prove our “worth” in order to exist. I always knew this but I came face to face with it when I was diagnosed with a disability. In this, I had to reconcile that I am worthy to be here on the planet because I am here. No other proof be necessary. I don’t need to have worth extracted from me in order for me to breath and live here. This mantra has saved me. Maybe I also intrinsically remembered what Mr. Rogers said too.

What's tricky about finding a change is that some people, if not many people actually like or love the system were in. They genuinely do, not just accustomed to it. We need to accept there are different people with genuinely different focuses, attitudes, mentalities, psychologies, life views that are natural to them. Despite all programming. Untill we fully accept that, we won't be able to affect change with peace and love. It's bloody tricky to think through all the variables let alone solve and move forward.

Why don't we pass a "universal" law stating that all corporations just have to break even, then distribute the rest? We'd have a good bowl of porridge society, wouldn't we?

@@CandidDate private corporations at their core are started to make money. What you seem to be talking about is a co operative. Brand is a good megaphone for bright concepts. I salute his knowing that he has a big platform and that he needs to use it to broadcast what people sharper than him have to say - when he does solos I cringe a bit, even if it serves the purpose of keeping it light and reaching out to more people - but for the rest I am thankful for this space, I have heard and discovered a lot of interesting ideas. Thanks!

I did not agree with Douglas Rushkoff cartoonish view of native American history & colonization. Speaking about "native americans" as if they were a unified peaceful people is absolute nonsense. To even say "the native Americans thought the colonizers were like zombies" screams lie / exaggeration. To not name the specific nation tells me he has no idea what he's talking about. He's read many of the thousands of books written by virtue signaling liberals through the years simplifying the Native American struggle as a made up referendum on capitalism & white people. It's stupid & doesn't honor native Americans.

43:00 how can i like the person who wants to pay me as little as possible regardless of the cost of living, deny me healthcare from my own tax dollars while they (corporations) pay no taxes, kill innocent women and children, murder and replace foreign governments, while stealing the natural resources of sovereign nations, all to pretend capitalism "works"/is "successful"? how do i like that person/those people? or how do i find enough humanity in that person/those people to refrain from killing them for their thoughts, feeling, beliefs, and actions/inactions? (eye for an eye at least)
@MajorMkor5 жыл бұрын
Notice how they didn't say you have to "like" this person or people, but instead that "you have to see the humanity in them". Two quite different things. You can still have compassion and understanding for someone you completely disagree with and dislike. It's very tricky and takes some deep digging and practice, but it is definitely possible to hold two contradictory ideas in your mind at once. I hope that clarifies it a bit!
@troywalkertheprogressivean84335 жыл бұрын
@@MajorMkor sorry my initial response is to "eliminate" such people. they actively choose not to care or act apathetically or hatefully. tens of millions are suffering. many are dying. hell our healthcare system is the third leading cause of death in america. these people cant be "educated". and none can claim ignorance. any ignorance is chosen. willful. no matter what, the mask is off, and america is not the hero/good guy, is not/does not live up to any of its promises. but thanks for your two cents. im still in the fire and brimstone camp. there should be a reckoning, and i dont want to wait till "judgement day".

it's a paradox, 2 opposing beliefs at once--the trick is to look AHEAD and find the place they join up. If you can believe that all is love/goodness, and that ALL original motives are personally good, then see one party went astray to protect (adjust) to personal hurts, usually in childhood. Follow the unloving acts/pronouncements back UP to better choices they made. You go to where both start to merge. Paradoxes are prizes holding much power waiting to be unlocked. Power is the willingness and ability to creatively make a new loving reality. It's why Trump; and available to everyone today. I know it can sound very confusing; I've distilled a lot.
