Having successfully slain a dangerous Illithid and its dwarven general, the Vox Machina find themselves surrounded by a small army of Duergar. They once again take to the air, hoping to clear the war camp and travel deeper into the territory of the Mind Flayers. Not quite fast enough, they are attacked mid flight and brought crashing to the ground, within a stone’s throw of the tunnel that will hopefully lead them to Lady Kima. With some quick spell work from Tiberius and Keylith, the group is able to flee further into the bowels of Khaloor and find shelter long enough to heal their wounds. Pressing forward, they quickly realize their path is growing more dangerous with every step into the darkness. Running into a pair of ogres hauling some rather exotic cargo, the Vox Machina quickly find things moving from bad to worse.

Sometimes it doesn't, but that's true for everyone who's ever played D&D. It's impossible to stay perfectly in character for so many hours all of the time. It's not a big deal.

I know Travis has ADHD, but I really wouldn't be surprised if Laura does too - issues with object permanence is a common trait, if I put something in a drawer I will more than likely completely forget about it, even if it's something important that I need all the time.

One of the best things to ever happen in our campaigns was when we were standing outside a sanctuary of Lloth in the basement of a Drow fortress trying to figure out to get in without dying. Our barbarian, in character, said, "Grunt bored," opened the door, and walked in. A tentacle trap was triggered. He rolled a nat 20 on his save and role-played it as literally punching the first tentacle. The trap quivered in fear the rest of the session.

Yes and no. While the DM is like the god of the game and can destroy you with a snap of his finger, the DM also is not unfailable. I would even suggest arguing IF the circumstances are right for that. Meaning, if the DM forget's something about some rules, story or spells etc, while you know and are able to proof that it's wrong, argue. But objectively and polite. Also, don't argue too long, if the DM won't budge, put the argument on a hold, roll with their decision and go back to your argument after the game.

I believe that Trinket is secretly a Druid of the Air Ashari Tribe and can cast Summon Woodland Creatures. Think about it: Trinket is in a cave deep underground. Alone. Bored. The only logical explanation is that either he can cast or Pike secretly brought one down, assuming something along the lines of this would happen, and not tell anyone. He could not have brought one down with him because he has to eat, the only place he could store it is in his mouth. Matt runs a game. Throws in a damn Mindflayer as an NPC who repeatedly threatens the party with death and is generally creepy as hell, entire party falls in love. I run a game, throw in a normal NPC who's a known thief and hasn't once lied to them or even threatened them and has literally had her kidney ruptured trying to save one of them, nothing I say can possibly reassure them she's on their side.

I think that players like NPC's who have unique characteristics and abilities that the rest of the party doesn't have. I know that, Spoilers: Watching the Mighty Nein take all of the NPC's that were intended to be antagonists and making them their friends because they thought the character was hot or interesting, and the NPC's that they remembered the most had something unique to remember them by and fun interactions. Sometimes, a nice NPC that helps can be forgettable or suspicious. I also think that giving them a motivation that's usually a little grey is helpful. It's easier to trust someone who's willing to admit that they did bad things or they want to do bad things, and still wants to help the party, kinda like the loveable asshole archetype. The player characters are also a factor. Beau and Fjord and sometimes Caleb were constantly suspicious of everyone they came across, and didn't really start trusting people and each other for a long time because it fits their characters to not take anything at face value and watch for betrayal for reasons that fit with their backstories. The only reason why they ended up making allies is because Jester trusted everyone she came across point blank and Caduceus thought that risks making allies were risks worth taking. But yea, that sounds really frustrating... I wish you luck in the future of making NPC's that your party will appreciate and learn to love!

@@faithjolley6034 The game's been over for a long time, but I'ma join this convo anyway cause it seems interesting. Essentially, I was running a game set in the SCP Universe, and she was one of several important NPCs who was involved in the initial breakout. Both of the players and two other NPCs were unique SCPs, each of which had abilities I came up with myself. Her ability was that she was immune to the anomalous effects of most SCPs, and could communicate with most sentient ones. This was both good *and* bad, as she wasn't immune to physical effects and she was still very much human, although she accidentally befriended the Plague Doctor because being immune to his anomalous effects means that he didn't register her as having the plague. She also got yeeted into the nightmare dimension by uncle Larry for a bit. Essentially, because there were so few players and the party was bound to be fucked up repeatedly, she was the NPC I used as essentially another player, and she ran mostly a support role.
