Grog plays his role perfectly. He doesn't take part in most of the discussions and planning, except to suggest the most obvious and violent solution. If they waste too much time, he speeds up the decision making which helps the pace of the game, but also fits his character. Finally, him and Scanlan provides most of the comic relief.

The funny thing is, illithid don't really have personal names. They don't need them amongst themselves since they have a hivemind. They only choose to use individual names when dealing with other races, usually with the intent to use their name as a symbol of fear. Meaning that there was, in Critical Role canon, an illithid who decided that Dave was the best name to inspire fear in the minds of their enemies and victims.

I played a session with this one guy (played half orc) who rolled high only when he drank rabid bats blood (from our first kill in the cave) to prevent getting poisoned but he rolled low and nat 1's during combat! My half-elf rogue ended up grappling him when he was mind controlled once (rolled nat 20 to his nat 1) after everyone else failed to restrain him (tried rope tying, binding spells, etc.)

That whole torture master kill sequence (roughly starting at 2:18:35 when Vax makes the creative call and luckily nobody else manages to do anything else) had me laughing like mad at the end. Such an intense buildup and what a satisfying release. Vax holds the door open, nods to Grog to do his thing, everybody cheers Grog on, Vex slaps him on the ass, Grog rage bullrushes in as the torture duergar backs up with fear in his eyes, gets tackled, flung around and impaled on his own meathooks, Grog rams his hand into the poor dude's mouth and rips off the jaw, then hammers it into the skull repeatedly, nice touch by Matt. I was howling. Oh my god, Tarantino couldn't do it better. This is peak entertainment. Why am I seven years late. Where has this been my whole life. Broodle.

Guessing we're throwing timing to the wind here, here's the description of Thunderwave in 5e: A wave of thunderous force sweeps out from you. Each creature in a 15-foot cube originating from you must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d8 thunder damage and is pushed 10 feet away from you. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and isn't pushed. In addition, unsecured objects that are completely within the area of effect are automatically pushed 10 feet away from you by the spell's effect, and the spell emits a thunderous boom audible out to 300 feet. They're kinda playing things loose, and if you ask me there's no problem with that. Makes things interesting.

Going back to this after so many years I have to say the Kima-Clarota Conundrum is definitely one of the high points of the early first campaign. Kima, while a badass and a good person at heart, is being incredibly unreasonable here, because not only do Clarota's and her own goals align at this point in time, but he is also very obviously their best shot at finding their way around the mind flayer colony and as such invaluable to the party. It's quite obvious that she's really riled up from her imprisonment and all, but they all still definitely need him. Clarota on the other hand is obviously planning to feed the party to his hive as soon as K'varn is vanquished, but he's just to valuable to just pass up this opportunity. Personally, I still think Scanlan made the right call threatening her with leaving her behind. Kima's powerful, but not as useful as Clarota who knows the ins and outs of Yug'voril. And she was definitely stepping out of line attempting to basically command the party to get rid of him after she'd just been freed from imprisonment that she'd gotten herself into because of ill planning and lacking preparation. Not to mention that she has zero to no sense of diplomacy (or forward thinking strategy for that matter).

It's not obvious at all to most of the party that Clarota will betray them, that's the issue here, I haven't gone further than this episode but being naive with a Mind Flayer puts everything at risk as iirc Lady Kima says herself, she is 100% correct to want the Mind Flayer out of the party because of people's nativity. Lady Kima says she's willing to work with Clarota so saying she has zero to no diplomacy is also incorrect. The issue is people's nativity which puts everything at risk, and while Clarota's knowledge and help is very useful there are other ways to achieve the goal you don't need an ally who will 100% betray you and you have a party of trusting people.

He was a better character when he wasn't acting aloof. It's a dumb thing to switch back and forth, you end up needing to overdo it because people won't take you seriously otherwise. Tiberius needed to be serious from the start. He wanted to sound aloof but have the presence and respect of a wizened person. Those two mix like water and oil.

FFS they function so well as a group. I'm around the 26min mark and I had to stop and comment this. Matt is describing, he stops just a second and (the guy playing) Scanlan takes the cue and initiates some nice roleplaying interactions. It goes on, they are all laughing and it is about to become a bit too much chaotic and pull them from the game when Matt just take the description back and everybody fall silent immediately. I like the story and the characters, the interpretations are great, but I am seriously impressed and awed at that level of coordination. Just awesome.

I just found this show like less than a week ago and I totally agree with you. The only thing I'm not liking on it so far is how much Vex/Laura talks. She just doesn't shut the hell up! Seems like she wants the fun all to herself and doesn't let the others play the game like they want to. But I hope that she stops being like that because I don't think I'm going to "bear" this for more 114 3 hours episodes.

Before the stream when they still used Pathfinder, they fought a boss called the Dread Emperor, who went around disguised as a child to kidnap other children. When they finally got to fight him, he had the captured children on collars & chains connected to him, & when they attacked him, Vox Machina found out it also hurt the children. Keyleth tried to use grasping vine to get one of the children away from him, & it ended in a really bloody tug-o-war. So she accidentally killed a kid trying to save him.
