We don't think it should be thought of as a persuasive essay, but a personal essay (hint: personal statement)! Starting your essay with a question isn't meant to make the reader question your application, but to pull them into your story and hook them from the very beginning. @@Collegeessayadvisors I totally agree. If you sound like every other applicant, then they're not going to actually play attention. Like as a person with your own opinions and thoughts, would you as someone trying to pick someone to go to your college, choose someone who's boring and has nothing that stands out from the rest of the thousands of applicants, or the persons paper that actually had personality in it and made you laugh? It's just regular humans reading your papers. They obviously have opinions and feelings themselves. I don't feel like reading an essay that i had read 50 other times before this one, and the only difference is the name on the top of the paper. Just saying.

@@Collegeessayadvisors I agree in my ESL class our teacher always ask us to begin with a question or something like that to grab the attention of the reader. She calls it the hook.
