My hay-day was back in the 70's. We played every opportunity we got and opportunities came to us, seemingly out of nowhere. It was like falling off a log, until the band broke up. Since then I've been on and off as a full-time musician and watched things get tougher and tougher. I think the worst thing I watched was musicians beginning to treat playing in front of an audience as if it were some kind of laborious task. I finally had to give up and pursue my music career, solo, through social media, which is a labyrinth.

Glad to read this, it is a labyrinth. If a band or an artist was good back in the day, it should've been more easy, because the only thing back then was direct interaction in front of a crowd. Ratio wise these days there are a lot more talented people and performers, because it is more easy to make music with the tools and the variety we have nowadays. To make a living out of it up this far for me, wasn't just a case, actualy I never earned a diam yet. I wonder how far the guys from Led Zeppelin or let's say Deep Purple would've got growing up 40years later? There are so many great performers now, you see. Greets, Simon

Profession musician is the best on this planet. Especially if you have a contract with an orchestra, theatre, opera, as a music teacher in schools, in a music academy and on top of that you can compose in different directions. Collateral such as health insurance and money for food and housing are very important. Of course without drugs. Your advice is very good. For that from me. If you have hit or very good music, no matter in which directions, there are no limits. Compose every day, do sports, be active on a voluntary basis and your success will come. Of course Disney or film companies have their music stars like Sony and Music Universal. TV, radio and your well-known ones too relationships J.S.Bach has 11 children and survived Also G.Telemann with over 5000 music works.

Distributors & platforms are still taking too high a percentage of royalties from smaller artists. There needs to be a tier-based system relative to sales & streams, not a one-size-fits-all deduction.
@IndieMusicAcademy
@IndieMusicAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
I agree! I personally use a distributor that takes a 15% cut and it adds up over time. There are some distribution options that give you 100% of your royalties and do not take a cut. Distrokid is one example. There are so many options now that you can probably find a pricing model that works for you!

building your fanbase is the foundation, of course. but the right connections in the industry can speed it up x1000. there's only as much you can do by yourself in 24 hours a day. at some point you're going to reach the ceiling. getting 10 new listeners every day is great, but at the end of the year it's still only ~3650. That's a cool metric to show off after your first year, but after your 2nd year your capacity of reaching new listeners is not going to dramatically increase as opposed to, let's say, getting 3650 new listeners in one day, if you have the right connections.

I subscribed after 3 of your clips and watched a bunch of them now. Wich makes sence. Why discover so many indirect roads instead of taking a shortcut from someone who is experienced? So yeah, things got more transparant and now I have a more perceptive way of achieving things. I wonder when I will earn my first dollar, let's say Euro, after spending years on KZbin, but never actually chasing a visualised goal, a smart goal. Greets from Belgium! Simon Flex

My crackpot theory is music fans don't exist anymore......just gatekeepers (including the Payola recipients), artists and marketing scammers remain.

If music fans don't exist that means everyone that attends live concerts are NPCs.

@@IndieMusicAcademy I should have specified fans for Indie Music, artists that are yet unknown....really seems fans don't give a shit anymore. But we sure have boat loads of music marketing scammers and Payola collecting gatekeepers.
