I've replaced my door casings upstairs so far, used WindsorOne craftsman style and they are super nice. Pretty expensive, but worth it for me. It's painful when my kids bash into them or draw on them, but they beat the crap out of MDF and the warped boards from the big box stores with their trash primer. I've picked up a ton of tips from this channel. Excellent work.

For primer, you should try the Bin or the Kilz original oil based rattle cans. I prefer those when priming wood. They sand since too!

Always learning something new on your channel. I always see the casing touching the floor in my area. Rarely do I see anything different, but when you showed the difference in appearance it really made, that just changed everything for me.

I used Rustoleum for all the trim in my heavily-trimmed bathroom and am extremely pleased with how smooth, durable and shiny it turned out. I thought it was for metal but it's great for wood or wood products too.

Rustoleum makes a lot of products. Richard is using their "2X" line, which is designed for wood and plastic ( as well as metal).

@@terencemerritt I installed wide, ornate trim @ octagonal window, dart and egg trim at vertical and horizontal edges of decorative wainscotting on 2 walls behind the W.C., Reeding trim @ door, tub-drain area access and small window, cavetto @ all wall-corners, chair-rail trim used as Crown, Casing used as Base-board, more egg and dart @ the 4' marble shelf above the Lav, and finally 8 different types of trim,etc. used in the built-in floor-to-ceiling cabinet with some open shelves and deep storage behind doors. Some of the trim was finger-joint, some was foam-backed plastic, some was molded sawdust (I don't know what it's called), some of the ornate egg and dart was clay over wood and some was pvc. The Rustoleum performed perfectly on all surfaces. I also used decorative tile trim around the Travertine tub-splash. It sounds overdone but it's actually minimal visually.

Glad your doing plinth blocks and they look great. I would to see you apply the base trim about 1" lower then the plinth though - around 5-3/4" instead of flushing out with the top of the plinth. Great job on the casing profile.

That’s the same trim in my house, I did mine 20+ years ago. My door trim is 4-5/8 wide with 7” base . Speaking of the trim in the wash room.

For the laundry room, the washer and dryer. Looks really nice. But what if you need to do maintenance on the machines? Leak? Replace the units? Is the trim on door leading to the garage blocking the machine from being pulled out? I’m always torn between finished look and ease of maintenance…how to balance?

A very knowlegeable paint salesman told me to grasp the rattle can by the top and swing it in a circle so the ball rolls around the groove in the bottom for better mixing.

I thought you would use white oak for door trim to match the floor and doors. Plinth blocks are normally flush with the casing on the inside edge, no reveal. Also, plinth block height is normally determined by the height of the base molding plus the reveal of base molding to front of plinth block.

You should get a good mechanical pencil. I use the Pentel graph gear 1000. Made of metal and feels good in your hand. It's available in .5 .7 and .9 mm. No sharpening needed. Truly a night and day difference

I like the plinth blocks. I’m my opinion I’m curious how it would look if the outside corners were rounded instead of square and sharp. To me it would match more with the rounded details of your casing. Maybe there’s a reason. You left them square.

You mentioned using ash on your trim, are you guys having same issue with all the white ash trees dying? Here in the midwest, north western Missouri, the ash borers are murdering all the white ash trees, I just had one, 80 plus yrs old, brought down before it wreaked havoc on my house, and another yet to come down, it's amazing how they bore smack dab in the center all the way thru the tree, branches and all. Beautiful wood , extremely hard to split, pertneer need a wood splitter. I am saving some of it for future wood projects. Also want to say, I truly enjoy your videos, very educational

@@henrypeisch5289 I guess what I’m asking is , when you are cutting casing to install it, a 16” stick normally will be too short. You need like a 17’ stick to get the sides and top from one stick. You add a plinth block and now you have an extra 16-24” depending on the length of your block.

BM Command is a much better trim paint than Scuff-X. When used with a HVLP it goes on like lacquer paint.

You need to use a different pencil when marking your measurements. Your Hull carpenter pencil is good for rough carpentry, but not fine finished work like you’re doing. Try a mechanical pencil with 0.5 mm lead.

I'm guessing that in the past you installed more basic, "builder grade, big box store" moldings around your doors and windows but now that you've met Brent Hull you're choosing more "historic, architectural grade" options. How do you decide how far down the rabbit hole you're going to go when applying historically styled moldings to a modern track or ranch style house? I mean, there's a danger that a house with 1980's proportions suddenly is covered in 18th century style trim details and it looks awkward.
