I remember seeing the Total War: Troy trailer with Achilles and, upon remembering this legend, thought to myself: "That guy could not possibly pass himself off as a handmaiden." How smart is Odysseus again? Odysseus: "You're a very *burly* young woman. Where did you say you were from?" Achilles: "...From up north." Odysseus: "How far up north?" Achilles: "... My people wear pants." Odysseus: "Well. Checks out for me. Now who could Achilles be?"
@AncientHistoryGuy4 жыл бұрын
From what I read, Achillies was meant to have been a very beautiful specimen, plus he was quite young at the time, so he could have probably pulled it off.
@fern10094 жыл бұрын
@@AncientHistoryGuy Understandable. When I think of Achilles, I usually defaulted to thinking of Brad Pitt's interpretation which is to say a slim but muscled fighter whose speed was as much a part of his abilities as his strength. That version of Achilles could defiitely pull of pretending to be a woman. But the one in Total War Troy does not look like someone who would bare the epithet "quick-footed." The Total War Achilles honestly looks closer to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson than Brad Pitt in terms of muscle mass.
@AncientHistoryGuy4 жыл бұрын
@@fern1009 I'm not the biggest fan of the Total War portrayal of Achillies, every other character they seem to have gotten somewhat historically accurate, or at least it keeps with the theme they are trying for. The Achillies model is, well, its something lol

I think they knew he was disguised and which one he was I think the plan was only to force Achilles to put himself.
@fern10094 жыл бұрын
@@bigjavo36 That's certainly one interpretation, and probably the only explanation for the beefy Total War version Achilles - or as I like to call him, Achilles "The Rock That is also Quick-Footed."

He's actually is his cousin, just once removed! Patroclus' grandmother is Achillies' Great-Grandmother. He's also older than Achillies, which is why I've made his character drawing slightly taller than Achillies :)

The idea pf Patroclus being Achiles lover is not mentioned by Homer in the original book. But this idea is suprisingly as ancient as the pyramids are to Cleopatra

well that explains why achilles had the beautiful,luscious mane that he did!😂though the majority of the time in mycenaean artwork the men often portray themselves with back length hair just as achilles is shown here.

What I find fascinating is how you can tell what civilization a person is from during the Bronze Age. Bronze Age Egyptians were known for their bald hair cuts, Hittites were known for their very long hair, Mespotomians were known for their beards, its fascinating.
@AidanMartin4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is true despite the egyptians wearing wigs that look like bob cuts and mesopotamian men seem to wear there hair long as well but usually more about chin or shoulder length rather then back or even ocassionally waist length like the myceneans,hittites or minoans did

@@AncientHistoryGuy most versions say he is blond but ok now that is something.I mean in the game helen is ginger though is usually depicted as blonde but agammenon and menelaus are describe as having red hair as well as odysseus
@AncientHistoryGuy4 жыл бұрын
@@AidanMartin yeah, like I'm all for a ginger Achilles, but I can't for the life of me find where on earth this is mentioned. I read somewhere, or my mother who is ginger decided to tell me about something she just read about redhead history, that's the ginger hair trait comes from Neandertal Heritage, which was the dominant Human species in Europe, so the Redhead gene at this time would be more dominant in the DNA pool in Europe at that time. So, it's possible a majority of Myceneans were redheads by this logic, but alas, I can't for the life of me find this article or whether it is worth any amount of salt.
