Its worth noting that in the iliad hector doesn't really best patroclus at all. Patroclus makes several attempts to scale the walls of troy and each time is beaten back by apollo before being stripped of his armour by the god and stabbed by a Dardanian spearman called Euphorbus and then finished off by Hector who was well aware of who he was killing and in doing so sealed his own death at the hands of achilles.

@@AncientHistoryGuy as long as apollo wasn't watching. In homer's version of events he and poseidon actually built the walls of troy for the king of the time Laomedon. They were forced to do so as a punishment for annoying zeus. Laomedon promised to reward them for doing so but then broke his promise afterwards. You'd think that would mean apollo wouldn't ally with troy, as poseidon sided with the greeks, but i guess he was pretty proud of the job he did

*He stole his armor and disguised himself* Common belief but not what Homer actually said. Achilles gave Patroclus his armor and gave him his blessings to go and fight the people of Illum. However he commanded him not to go to the walls of the city for then the gods would not protect him and he would die. Patroclus forgot and when he reached the walls he was killed.

It's interesting how many versions of the same story there are tbh. Now that you say this I vaguely remember reading this as a child in some cartoon history book (funnily enough the book that got me into history) but had forgotten that had been mentioned in it. I've always heard the thieving of armour version, good plot point tho.

@@The_Daily_Tomato He said Helen went willingly as well while she's kidnapped in the earliest texts. Also says Agamemnon decided to kill his daughter but he was told to by the gods through prophesy. If you read the Iphigeneia book there's a myth about the mum getting revenge and killing Agamemnon but as she wasn't told to by the gods she'd basically broken one of the biggest taboo rules of ancient Greece about killing family and the gods destroyed her life and her estranged son killed her before being saved by Athena in the first trial of 12 man jury in Athens so kind of important.

In "The Iliad," we see and understand Achilles" tragic rage--Hector deserved it. He killed Patroclus lustily and bragged, calling Patroclus a fool for listening to Achilles, who had urged him and his Myrmidons on but warned Patroclus to come back and not besiege the walls of Troy.

Perfect. Just finished the Iliad a couple of days ago 👍🏽 Though it was abridged on a podcast. Is Agamemnon described as a redhead and Achilles as blond?
@AncientHistoryGuy4 жыл бұрын
so I originally just made Agamemnon a redhead to differentiate him from everyone else, HOWEVER, after a conversation, I had with someone on the channel about red headedness in ancient times, I actually found out his brother is mentioned as being a redhead! So i got it half right by accident haha!

don't downplay Achilles and Patroclus' totally not homosexual relationship
@samuelnerad24294 жыл бұрын
In some later plays written of the Iliad, they were. But they definitely were not in the Iliad itself, as both men are said by Achilles to have the most phílos (friendly / family love). The term for a love amongst lovers is eros, and would have been used by Achilles considering that homosexuality in the military of Greece wasn’t uncommon back then. In addition there is a passage where they sleep with women used by Homer to dispel the belief that they were homosexual. Their relationship is supposed to be compared to that of Orestes and Pylades or of Damon and Pythias.
@micahistory4 жыл бұрын
oh yes every time two men are friends they must have been gay
@AncientHistoryGuy4 жыл бұрын
@@samuelnerad2429 I mean I'm all for the common legend bit of the myth, certainly was a part of greek culture. But the thing is love as a term meant something completely different back then. Same as the word virgin use to refer to someone that wasn't married. As I said all for Patroclus and Achilles being lovers, but we as modern people have to realize that their relationship wasn't the stereotypical gay relationship we think of nowadays, and it would have been more of a mentor/ younger partner sort of relationship, funnily enough with Patroclus being the mentor figure because of his age. Again all for gay Achilles and Patroclus, just I highly doubt it would have been a more "modern" view of a homosexual relationship. The past is a foreign country they do things differently there.
@itarry43 жыл бұрын
@@AncientHistoryGuy yhea they didn't have gay and straight but they were definitely lovers and it's not true to the text to say otherwise. He wanted to be put in the same urn as his dead lover it's pretty clear. As you say they didn't see it the same so had no issues with everyone knowing. It's a love story as well as the way to be a warriors story..
