The real answer: Find the Sick SOB tying people train tracks and off him and everything's solved. No but seriously, the trolley problem is the most morally questionable problem, because if you choose to save many by sacrificing one, you will be seen as a hero who saved 5 people but also a uncaring bastard for sacrificing one. If you do it vice versa, you are an evil SoB for letting 5 people croak, just to save one. Point is,if you add spices to the question and how you view the problem before you, your theoretical answer is going to be vastly different everytime.
@TheAnimatedOsprey

The problem with this question is that is is heavily loaded and basically ends with you becoming a murderer. In real life, human ingenuity would likely lead to more problem solving options than just pulling the lever and watching what happens.
@erenakay8873
@erenakay8873 3 жыл бұрын
You wont be evil if you dont do anything and let 5 die. You will be neutral, its not your job to save people. Nobody can judge you for somebody else tying people into rails. I would most likely save 5, without having any information. For example what if you knew one of them? Like would you kill 5 people or your mother? I would choose my mother obviously. Or would you kill 5 elderly or 1 baby? Would you sacrifice 1 elderly for 5 teens?

Depending on how fast the trolley is a how far then it’s possible to move them away Judging from how far most people can see, you can easily see the trolley incredibly early. Meaning you can hit the switch and get the one person out of the way. Saving everyone The second one depends on how low the over pass is. Since you’re probably in the middle you could probably drop down to the ground (hang by your hands and drop yourself down from there) and move the people out of the way. Also killing no one and sustaining maybe a sprained ankle

but if the trolley is already heading towards the 5 and you do nothing, nothing is REALLY on you, but you still have to live with the fact that you let 5 people die. however, if you do change the direction of the tracks, you ARE causing someone to die. you see what i mean? your actions will directly cause someone to die. i feel the question is more about are you willing to make an executive decision that will save and kill? or will you stand by and watch so you don’t have to make a decision at all
@misterp768
@misterp768 3 жыл бұрын
The rational choice would be to save 5 with the result of one dying. But doing nothing means 5 died and one lived. In the position of controlling where the train goes, you still make a choice if you do nothing. Either way you will feel bad about it, you just gotta justify it for yourself to be the right choice.

@@misterp768 i had it explained to me with hiroshima and nagasaki as an example. Nobody stopped the order from reaching the pilot and nobody felt sorry for that. Nobody cared as they weren't the one dropping the bombs. The pilots were the ones in constant regret for the rest of their lives. If you do nothing and let the 5 die you only let the order go through and didn't stop anything from happening. You don't drop the bomb. It's not your fault. But if you chose to pull the lever and kill the 1 you were consciously dropping the atomic bomb. You may have done what was asked of you (by your logical thinking in this scenario) yet you were the one pulling the lever and pressing that button. You will live in constant regret only soothed by the thought of you couldn't have done anything else. It's not the best example but then again i didn't have the best teacher. If the trolley would have been stopped buy one very fat person then, let’s ignore the fact that you’d most likely be unable to physically push someone large enough to stop a trolly off a bridge in time, the first 2 bodies should be enough mass to stop the trolley since apparently it’s moving slow enough anyway where a fat man would have stopped it.
