1:20 Not only was the original supertruck series focused on short tracks, it was focused on western short tracks, while the busch series was focused on eastern ones. It filled a gap nascar had between the winston west and the cup series. Then nascar just got rid of the regional identities for both the busch and truck series and had them just be support series for the cup races.

For me, the peak of the trucks was 2007-11. It had everything.... A few flagship Fox races at Mansfield, Martinsville, and Auto Club, Kyle Busch at his prime, Hornaday vs. Benson, plus underdog wins from Eric Darnell at Michigan in 2007 to 2007 Whelen Mods East champion Donny Lia winning at Mansfield in 2008. Plus, it was unpredictable, and sometimes, the races were better than Cup and Busch/Nationwide on many occasions. Plus, it was the best way to spend a Friday night or Saturday afternoon... Best yet, they fought for bragging rights and a toolbox that is on the roof at Victory Lane... I miss those days.

That man was Hornaday. Whenever I played NASCAR 08 and 09, I went with the truck with Pittsburgh colors... AKA: Eric Darnell with the Northern Tool truck. NCTS racing needs the NXS/Cup has-beens in order to even out the field between 4 different kinds of drivers... Savvy veterans, young kids, part timers, and 1 Norm Benning. I started watching NASCAR when the truck series was in its golden era in 2006-07, which may create bias I admit, but it is so good to see others appreciate it because the truck series from 03/04-2013 was some of the best racing product America had to offer, and the trucks with whatever packages they had back then raced AMAZING on almost every track. Everything from TV coverage to the points battles were incredible to witness as a little kid and even now as an adult. Ron Hornaday and Todd Bodine, despite being a couple of the old-timers, were 2 of my favorites back then, probably helped by how amazing their trucks looked during that time.

Mesa Marin, Louisville, Evergreen, Portland (not the road course), Topeka, Flemington, Colorado National, I-70 Speedway. Those are a lot of, but not all, of the Truck-specific tracks they were going to. All had a personality. All put on constant great racing lap after lap. The races were short, so you had to go from the beginning, no "biding your time". There were always lapped trucks. There were always "Truck guys" that you knew would be in the field, week in and week out, year in and year out. It was a great time to be a living racing fan back then. I'll never forget Butch Miller winning in a photo finish with Mike Skinner in the inaugural season.

I'll step up and be positive here. I worked for a truck team back in 2019. Forgetting about crappy drivers and playoff gimmicks for the moment, the truck series is still awesome today. Going to the ILMOR engine has actually brought more teams into the sport with guys who never had the money to become cup superstars and the fact the truck series hasn't changed too many rules to the trucks actually means for a lot of longevity. A handful of teams have 15 year old chassis today still racing on the track. That is a MAJOR cost saver. The series has guys who are great racers who never would have had another opportunity. The Hill brothers, Bret Holmes for awhile, Ty Majeski, Crafton, Friesen, Bayley Currey, and a bunch more. I think NASCAR knows the truck series has lost some identity and they're slowly getting back to that point. Even in the 2024 season, if you had all 3 series at one track, the truck race was usually the best race. Las Vegas was good. Kansas was good. North Wilkesboro was perfect. Nashville was good. Give it 5 years, the trucks will be off this playoff format and they'll be back at some OG tracks they left behind. NASCAR tried to make it a development series it was never quite made to be.

The difference between today's truck drivers with the older generation ones is the feeder system in racing.... Back then, you had to grind through everything, and you had to pray that someone sees your talent so they can hire you and maybe land a sponsorship deal depending on the team owner. Nowadays, you have drivers who are connected to families who are rich by association with sponsors big and small who will bankroll the driver as the next big thing. Some are good, like Heim, and some are mid, like Connor Jones. But that is racing.. Money is the new name of the game. At least sportswashing isn't in NASCAR yet...

While the field has closed up (at Martinsville first to last was only .7 gap) it doesn't help when everyone drives through another. The only saving grace right is get cup rejects into Trucks (Hemric,Yeley, Dibennitdetto, T. Dillon, Grala Jones, and Haley) cause they'll teach these kids more respect like Allgaier. The Truck series has definitely fallen from grace but the sport has just gotten too expensive for a lot of the smaller teams, and the purse and TV money was never even as good as the Busch/Xfinity series anyway which is why there's so much ride buying in Trucks nowadays. That's a big part of the reason they went from basically Cup motors at the beginning of the series to the 550hp crate motors that run near WOT all race long on tracks bigger than 1 mile today. ARCA and the east/west series have had a similar downturn and the car counts especially in the regional series are just sad, but at least they have somewhat of their own identity with more local level short tracks which we cannot say for the Truck series anymore. As far as the race format they had it right with the original format with a halfway break and non competitive pit stops, the stages are way too short. This past season when the races weren't total wreckfests, they were just plain boring. Next year I'm just going to skip watching the Trucks entirely.

They turned the trucks from a Sportsman series to just a full on development series. Nascar and the teams have morphed it into a minor league farm system now which was definitely not the original concept of the series. I agree they should eliminate the stage racing from this series to really allow drivers to learn how to drive at the top level and the playoffs given how short and spread out the season is (ridiculous the playoffs start in August and end in November).

NASCAR killed it just like the Busch series and now the cup. Wish someone would make a new series.

I mean no one goes to a truck race and no one watches a truck race so its only a matter of time until the series folds.

2 years ago i couldn't name a nascar driver with a gun to my head, but isn't this the case for all drivers in all 4 nascar classes? and F1? Bring money however possible and then you drive?

Maybe im crazy, but the Cup series should run truck bodies. The OEMs dont make sedans or coupes anymore mostly, Trucks are the best selling vehicles in america. That SUV/EV concept they showed off is likely a good way theyll be able to race a "Blazer/RAV4/Mach-E" in some series at some point, but making trucks the cup is the most logical.

As a european kid i knew i saw trucks race on tv as a kid at some godforsaken hour. Looked reasonable, now i looked at "playoffs?" and im scratching my head, whats wrong with a normal season?

The issue is the cost to run on the larger tracks if you want to be competitive. Large tracks are all about aero, which means wind tunnel time and massive hours to massage bodies. This means that the clown college with money can easily buy a ride, forcing out the older drivers with no sugar daddy. It also means that a regional driver cannot really afford to show up for one race where he might do well enough to pay for the entry, parts, and tires. Sadly, money talks so it will never go back to the great racing that it used to be.

Imagine some of the tracks being around back in the 90s and 2000s that would have been awesome if they would have been shut down due to financial reasons, a low attendance.

Racing, no matter what the sanctioning body, has always been filled with drivers having support and getting rides, or access to good cars because they had backing. Listen to a lot of the racing legends tell how they came up, a lot got into their series based on the fact they had sponsorship or family money. The idea thay there was a day only the best drivers got rides is a myth.

NASCAR is in trouble on so many levels. If this is the future group of drivers ( not racers) that will race in Cup. It's not looking good.

The SPEED Channel portion of the original Craftsman Truck Series era holds special memories for my friends & I. I can go on for hours & hours about races from 2003-2008. I could go on for only mere seconds about a Truck race from the last 8 years. I feel NASCAR has always been trying to ruin the Truck Series because of just how good it was during the original Craftsman era & just how much it upstaged the Cup Series. Well they have, but Cup hasn't improved either. That says a lot about just how bad NASCAR as a whole is right now.

I watch xfinity and cup almost every weekend, don’t think I’ve watched a truck race in over a decade. Just due to the speed channel no longer being a thing and I don’t get fs1 in Canada.

I remember watching the trucks back in the early days and they were great. It was kinda cool seeing them go to a super speedway for the first time but honestly that was the worst thing ever for that series. That series was just meant to be a short track series and it should have stayed that way. Like everyone else, I loved and miss Speed Channel. I don't even bother watching the weekly mayhem in today's truck series.

Bring down the costs, so teams can more easy get sponsors and choose the best available drivers, rather than wait to see which trust fund kid hires the team.
