I think a washer and dryer is more of a convince, and not so much a return on investment. People pay $4000 to $6000 in residential units because of convenience, and don’t have the advantage of free water and electricity like we do. We, and when I say we, I mean my wife, loves our washer and dryer. Believe me, if you get one, you won’t regret it. Now that you’re staying in places a month at a time, does that mean there’s a chance you’ll come hang with us in Galveston this winter? Keep um coming!

Great info, but I will say when we had to use a laundry mat all the time it was more like $15/week for 2 of us, not $15/month. For anyone crunching numbers, that might be a more realistic figure.

Just discovered your channel and enjoy the content and presentation. We’ve rv’d for 45+ years but not full time. We were weekend warriors until I retired 2+ years ago. Owned my finance biz 35 years. As such I can tell you debt is a major issue for most. Regardless of income. Most will spend more than they make. They want that instant gratification. No accident, we prepped for this for 47 years. Kids grown & gone. We are now out for a couple of 2 week trips + a snowbird 6-8 week trip per year. We also are out 4-5 days about 6-8x a year as well. Our goal is being out at least once a month year round. Keeping our sticks & bricks. Keep up the good work. Best to both of y’all.

The reason National Parks and other campgrounds lower prices in the winter is that water or other services are shut down, reducing their maintenance cost. Typically you are not paying for garbage pickup, cleaning out fire pits, mowing, water pumping, septic pumping, etc. during the winter. We boondock on Forest Service land all the time for free, they call it "Dispersed Camping".

I really enjoy everything you two talk about. You mentioned portable washers. My little portable spin dry washer, that I put in my bathtub on a plastic crate when I use it, cost just under $100 on Ebay and I wouldn't part with it. They do a very nice job if you use and treat them properly. You don't stuff them full, you don't stop the spin before it's finished, etc. I think I've had it about 3 years and I'm still impressed with the good job it does for such a little washer.
@HappilyEverHanks3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your support!! 😃This is great information that you have shared with us, we appreciate you taking the time to write this out for us and everyone reading. It is nice to know that the portable washers do a good job! What kind of RV do you currently own??
@trenchantsometimes51493 жыл бұрын
@@HappilyEverHanks We don't own an RV but are seriously considering getting one to get away from our cold winter weather. Our biggest concern is can we handle it since we are in our 70s. My husband is a retired truck driver so the driving part isn't a concern, he's still good there. We're just wondering about everything else. We would prefer boondocking and wonder if there are others in our age bracket doing it. We own rural acreage and would come back here for the summer.
@trenchantsometimes51493 жыл бұрын
@@HappilyEverHanks The portable washer is pretty good also in that you can save water by washing perhaps some delicate things or whatever hardly gets dirty, then squeeze the water out of them, pop them in the spin side and wash your socks, or work shirts, etc. in the hardly dirty wash water. Works just fine and water is saved. One thing I also do is wash jeans one pair at a time because they are bulky and heavy and the washer is small. I don't try to make a workhorse out of it and overload it. I also don't use the full amount of time. In my experience it hasn't taken but six or seven minutes on dirty things. No need to make the machine run plus use electricity if not needed.

That’s fantastic to hear! We have met many other people that do Boondocking in all ages. It seems like a great way to save some money and get off grid, we are hoping to do this more in the future as well! @trenchantsometimes51493 жыл бұрын
@@HappilyEverHanks What I should have said is saving water. I was being distracted and not thinking clearly. Sorry. It does use electricity no matter what water is being used, and one has to be careful with the electric cord when using it in a bathtub, shower, etc. I put the washer on a rectangular shaped plastic crate (I think they're used in bakeries) which keeps it up out of the water when it empties, then I drape the electric cord over a command hook on the wall under the shower then into a short heavy duty extension cord which reaches the wall receptacle.

We're also in our 30's and do full time RV life. We converted a cargo trailer to be our home/business on wheels. We currently operate out of it on the road. We do strictly boondocking so we save so much by not going to RV parks and we get closer to nature and more bike trails. I'm also a nurse but opted for a different career avenue rather than travel nursing and we can afford the change since we boondock. Totally reccomend it! A generator was our best investment!

I think the washer and dryer is more necessary for people with kids. The amount of laundry is just exponentially more. For some the time and energy saved may be worth the investment. It also means less clothes to carry around. I saw one video where they had a machine that both washed and dried in the same "bucket," no need to rotate laundry and takes up less space.
@cathyfrint88603 жыл бұрын

We actually only do a load every 2 weeks. We do everything in bulk at laundromats (much bigger washer and dryers compared to RV parks). Also the amount of detergent we use is way more frugal than most people would be. Hope this helps!
@thecraftyvoyager12323 жыл бұрын
I was also wondering this. We do laundry about once every 1-2 weeks and it’s $3 a load for wash and dry at our current park which is pretty cheap compared to what we usually pay at at a park or a campground. We’re spending a minimum of $30/month on laundry. And that’s not including soap

A very informative video. My wife and I are both retired we only rv part time . We live right in the middle of Louisiana. Years ago we used to do a lot of motorcycle trips Roanoke , Va, Jacksonville, Florida up the east to Myrtle beach SC to the bike rally . We had so much fun and we stayed in a brand new Condo that was doing some half price promotions. A few years later we bought our first rv a toy hauler. We are now on our 5 th rv , we no longer ride bikes due to a 18 wheeler wreck that left me partially disabled. We now own a Jayco 38 ft eagle premier travel trailer . In one of our previous rv’s we traveled out west to many locations . We now do just local trips but enjoy it just the same . Love your channel keep up the good work.

But love your Laundry part, I have always said it does not pay to have a washer dryer with weight and the addition to your gray tanks and the cost I am happy to go to a laundromat, you meet all kinds of people there. We would go about every 2 weeks and make a day of it, get our groceries and fuel up for our next move so it was just how we rolled. Maintenance? Medical? Monthly breakdown of cost of memberships? Entertainment? If you have a washer you have to focus on full hookup sites, which can add to camp fees. Clothing? Many other items that are not specific to being full time but still need to be considered if you are planning to hit the road. My advice is to start keeping track before you take the leap, because most of those expenses will still be relevant . Some will be gone but many more added. You should have a breakdown of four new trailer tires and 4 new truck tires! Our cost would be at least 50. a month just for tires! Not trying to be critical and I appreciate your video, but it just isn't that simple! New RV roof this year $4000. It is always something!

So a washer/dryer combo would take 8 years to pay off but you'll get 10 years out of it easy so there's 2 years of laundry mats that you're avoiding altogether. It's also not just the financial side, it's all the waiting around and I can get my washing done on a short cycle in 15mins opposed to an hour at the laundry....

@@HappilyEverHanks Not yet. Our goal is to transition to RV life, though. We just spent the last 17 years homeschooling our sons and are entering a new chapter of life with more travel. This summer was all about pushing ourselves to get out there and tent camp so that we could travel around our beautiful state. But we did just buy a small squaredrop camper and we'll be continuing our adventures in that. We definitely have the philosophy of START NOW with what you have and then upgrading from there without increasing our debt load. Which is why we appreciate your message so much. It's tempting to want to get out there and buy the best truck and RV combo but we're trying to do this in a fiscally responsible way.

Summary Based on their lifestyle using number in the video 11240$ for a year Breakdown Food - 7972.74$ (664.39$ a month) Propane - 716.17 (with winter in Pennsylvania and skirts((winter months 532.23$))) Laundry - 110$ (with free laundry sometimes) (about 15$/month for 2 ppl) Gas - 4931. 99$ (total includes their other car for a bit and lots of travelling at the start) RV Parks - 5481.84$ based on months shown in spread sheet and with boondocking ( May - July numbers not shown in video) All numbers will vary depending on your lifestyle, the amount you travel and locations stayed. (I don't like the cold and would winter in Florida. My propane will be cheaper but Parking may be more.) I think 12000$ to 15000$ is a good estimate for a beginner. To the OPs. Thank you so much for your tracking and excellent explanation of some ot the cost.

Thank you for such a useful video. Very helpful. So glad we did this for 10 years in the 80"s and 90"s when we were younger and childless. That's when it's a fun learning experience. Not when you are too old to hike, bike and climb. Many times we were the only ones at campgrounds because RVs were not popular and living in one made people wonder what was wrong with us. It was super inexpensive and provided a freedom that's indescribable. I can't imagine doing it today at such high prices for everything.

Thank you for the break down 🫂 ... What was the total spent? Cost of RV? What about maintenence cost? (Tires replacement, motor maintenence, oil change, Water pump, etc) List of bare minimum basic items (propane tanks, kitchen items, pan, cup, bed, blankets, towels, etc) Maybe a full checklist 🤔 What items worth getting used versus new? ... As for the washer dryer, been looking up for the past 2 years, they are under $1K not sure where that $1,500 price came from 🤔

As Sea Shed said, the investment in a washer/dryer unit, in my opinion, is “paid off” more so in your time and ease of use, as opposed to strictly monetary cost to use ratio. I agree that it’s an individual choice based on what each person is willing to deal with when it comes to laundry.

So refreshing to see another couple who are on the same page financially. Wife and I are in our late 60s and have lived a wonderful life. We sacrificed some the first half of our marriage but do almost the opposite now and pay cash for everything. "Debt free asap" became our motto. We have friends and family members who did just the opposite and are paying the price big time for their care free spending lifestyle.

Wise young people to be debt free. We also followed Dave Ramsey and achieved that goal, too. We will be hitting the road fulltime in November. Our new - used 5th will be delivered tomorrow! We clear on the house at the end of the mo th. Having an estate sale to significantly downsize in a few weeks. I'm exhausted with so much going on, but God is good and has opened the doors. #thankshanks!

Dave Ramsey's forbidding credit cards makes me not listen to him. Credit card debt is the killer, not credit cards Look how much they spent for the year, if everything was paid for with a credit card they would be getting airline miles or cash back or whatever perk you choose. The key is to pay off every month. We have been debt free for years but we put EVERYTHING on our Platinum airlines credit card. We pay off twice a month and have yet to pay for an airline ticket. We can fly off to see our Grandkids any time we want, no need to save up for tickets. Dave Ramsey can't control himself so he thinks no one else can either.

@@linmurray436 we also use 1 credit card and pay off every month. That is where my husband and I differ with Ramsey. But nevertheless, it's a great program and aided us to become debt free. And I still listen to him. 🙂
