As a Bok supporter I hated Fitzpatrick. I could see him smoking the referees. But the best thing I heard is that he annoyed Zinzan and Robin Brookes on the tour bus one day, and they beat him up.

I think we all hated Fitzpatrick. I've heard that he's actually a nice guy off the field but hey, we don't know him off the field! Haha. Looks like Zinzan and Robin also could only take so much!

What a great and interesting interview there, Peter! Most will remember him for that bite, but I will remember him as a destructive tighthead. In fact, he had more issues with his notifications in this interview than with any loosehead! Interesting to hear his thoughts on Ian MacDonald as well - I remember from your interview with him how serious he took weight training with Tom Petranoff and how hard he trained. A strong tighthead lock is often underrated and I think there we underestimate the impact of PSDT in the current Bok pack.
@frontrowrugby9 ай бұрын
Thanks Willie. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it's a shame the bite is what defines a player who was actually one of the strongest tightheads we had. Yes, good memory there to recall what Ian Macdonald said about Tom Patranoff! Never underestimate a strong tighhead lock! PSDT is a machine!

Another top interview Peter- Johan seems like a nice man! He was tough in his playing days & no doubt would've been part of RWC 95 had he not been banned! Speaking of the 94 NZ tour some of your previous guests who went on that tour all said the same thing: if there was a reliable goal kicker the Boks would've won the series! Well the selectors back then made a huge blunder in omitting Joel Stransky- he would've won it for the Boks! But that's all history now!
@frontrowrugby9 ай бұрын
Quite right, Sean. Throw in some accurate kicking and it could have been a famous away Test series win. I remember as a boy waking up at 4 in the morning to watch most of those matches. Many of them were before I had to go to school! Long time ago now. And yes, Johan was very nice. He just made a mistake and it cost him his career and earned him a reputation unfortunately.

Johan..I believe you were treated very unfairly...the team should have stood with you...Pieter this kind of shows the provincialism and division that was present in those early days of re-admission...And look today we have a team from every culture in SA...probably every language in SA spoken in that shed during half-time....Thanks Peter.. Ps::Wouldn't look at his Bokkie in the bar...lol

Thanks Sakabula! No doubt Johan made a mistake but he really was thrown under the bus by the team management. Provincialism was very ugly in those days but at least that is a thing of the past now! Our team today is wonderful!

I had to play it back,105kgs as such a hardcore prop. I agree,Gary Pagel was a destroyer. Should have bitten his ear cometely off,put him in the van Gough club. True,feels the Abs with Fitz and even after him controlled the refs. James Dalton didnt get intimidated either. Seems the bokke took ages to adjust after apartheid,took ages to let go of the survival mentality and embrace professionalism,I mean the management and coaches .
@frontrowrugby9 ай бұрын
It's interesting that 105kg was a hardcore prop in those days but these days that is what some flyhalves weigh! Very different era hey? Hahaha, yes, many people agree Johan should have bitten the whole ear off! Yeah even after 1995 we still took a while to get to grips with professionalism but at least these days things are great!
@lesliestrydom41576 ай бұрын
SA returned to the test arena in 1992 and won the WC in 1995.Not too bad I would say but regardless SA Rugby still struggled for quite a while. Maybe as a result of less test experience levels compared to other countries amongst players and even some coaches.
@frontrowrugby6 ай бұрын
Yes it is true. The team took a while to get to grips with the rigours of international rugby. And then they also took a while to adapt to professionalism. Amateur administrators didn't help the cause but thankfully these days it looks like everything from the board to the players and the coaching staff are a well-oiled machine.

Interesting interview from perspective of AB supporter. He says “intimidate, intimidate, intimidate and aggression” and that rugby shouldn’t be played like that….yet Springboks celebrate players like Ezebeth and Botha who use violence and aggression in games. I don’t understand comments made about Fitzpatrick and why Bok supporters hated him so much.
@frontrowrugby9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yes there is certainly intimidation and aggression from both sides but I think he was talking about intimidation of referees and officials more specifically. Yeah, Fitzpatrick is public enemy number one in South Africa. He has "Australian cricketer" status in our country.
@flinfaraday18215 ай бұрын
He was talking about the constant yapping and intimidating referees and being a general cunt on the pitch. Aggressive play is part of rugby, which is something different.
