Ishida Mitsunari is presented to us in the Shogun TV show as Ishido Kazunari. The real Ishida did live during the bloodstained dawn of the Sengoku period, a time characterised by powerful Samurai Lords vying for the ultimate prize, the title of Shogun.
In the midst of the chaos and devastation, the tale of Ishida Mitsunari emerged as a legendary politician, as he would oppose one of the most powerful and warlike Daimyo in Japan, that being Tokugawa Ieyasu, their rivalry would breed one of Japan's most famous and studied periods. Ishida would rise to prominence during one of the most turbulent times in Japanese History, this is his tragic story.

Ishida Mitsunari's enmity with several of the Daimyo from the Korean invasion stemmed mainly from his blunt, yet honest reports on them, which often rightly called out the Daimyos' pursuits of personal glory or sabotaging of rivals that hampered the campaign. A mark of Ishida's character can be seen in how he earned Otani Yoshitsugu's undying loyalty and friendship. Yoshitsugu was a leper and during a social drinking event he was hosting where a large bowl of tea was passed around to guests, a bit of pus from his open sores dropped into the bowl. The other guests refused to drink, making excuses or pleading various excuses, Mitsunari though, took the bowl immediately when it was his turn, drank deeply of it, then complimented Yoshitsugu on the taste and quality of the tea he had provided. Yoshitsugu, used to being scorned and avoided for his leprosy, remarked that Mitsunari was an extraordinary man and the two became firm friends. During the Sekigahara Campaign, both Shima Sakon and Otani Yoshitsugu felt that the Western Forces would likely lose to Ieyasu, yet chose to support Mitsunari out of personal loyalty and friendship. After losing the battle and reaching shelter, when a monk asked what Ishida needed, expecting him to ask for food and water, Mitsunari replied with venom, "IEYASU'S HEAD!" he refused to take his own life because that would also be a burden Ieyasu would have to assume. Finally, when on the way to his execution, a friend asked him if he would like anything, Mitsunari asked for some hot tea, but none was on hand, his friend offered him a persimmon, which Mitsunari refused politely, saying they were bad for the digestion. The astounded friend reminded Mitsunari he was about to be executed, so why worry about health? Mitsunari's answer was, "One never knows what the future may hold, so one should always take care of oneself."

Sorry but most of the “stories” are considered heresay by Japanese historians. As Otani never served long enough with Ishida to be friends, the tea ceremony story is one of the here say stories. As the age range of both men would of made the time frame of the ceremony impossible.

@@user-ww7nr4vk9m that depends on the historian really as there are differing schools of thought on the stories, though the consensus from what I have read and supported by historian Chris Glenn an Australian born resident of Japan who spent years visiting and researching the lead up to and aftermath of the Sekigahara Campaign for his book is that the accounts of Mitsunari's friendships with Yoshitsugu and Sakon as well as his reports on the actions of the Daimyo involved in the invasion of Korea(which do have documentation) are supported and recognized as factual. This is similarly confirmed by the research of Charles River for his own book covering Sekigahara.

You missed the reason why Hideyoshi killed off his nephew Hidestugu and the rest of his family. Hideyoshi was getting old and decided to make his nephew heir. Then one of his concubines gave birth and talked him into revoking the official heir designate in favor of their little boy. There was dissatisfaction among some of the vassals and fearing for his young son, he ordered the sub family to kill themselves...which they did. Another tasty bit that is very famous during the battle at Sekigahara , Kobayakawa and his troops were negotiated into switching sides from the Western to the Eastern army at the crucial moment...but he hesitated and refused to move. In frustration, Tokugawa fired his canon at his would be ally to force him to move and engage one side or the other. Kobayakawa ordered the suprise attack upon Ishida's coalition! Such decisiveness! Sometimes you gotta play a wildcard and roll the dice when defeat is near. Many lords changed sides as the Tokugawa's Eastern army gained advantage. After the war, these lords would be accepted but were held at a distance as the outer lords while those loyal from the start were given special considerations as the inner lords.

And you have to know Sekigahara was never the battle between Toyotomi and Tokugawa, it actually a war of Toyotomi factions

Always wondered if he was a paper pusher or true warrior. Different accounts claim he is one or the other but not both.😮
@historyprofiles
@historyprofiles Ай бұрын
from the sources i read, I believe in his youth he was a decent warrior, Mitsunari even collected famous swords created by Masamune the most famous blacksmith in Japan. Due to his writing many letters to Hideyoshi and being a diplomat, his reputation as a warrior was lost and he did get a reputation as a pen pusher and schemer. Then when he lost the battle of Sekigahara, his image would be portrayed as a weak bureaucrat. In reality he was probably an extremely capable person in many aspects of life, finance, combat, organisation. So i think he was a bit of both

he was a brilliant administrator, but not so much a warrior. His first real campaign he was given charge of was the siege of Oshi castle during the Odawara campaign. He wasnt able to take the castle despite outnumbering his enemy by a massive 10 to 1 advantage. He's a very honest man who tells the truth no matter how difficult that was, but his skills as a battlefield general were lacking.

This is all here say, no records from that timeframe ever show Ishida being in battles or campaigns, the stories made up 100s of years later were made up to throw shade on the Tokugawa Shogunate when they wanted it to end and the Meiji rebellion was starting. Ishida was an administrator not a samurai, his father was never a retainer, his father was a merchant. Just like Toyotomi who was adopted into the Habashi clan, Ishida was adopted into a lower samurai family to give him legitimacy so they could sit down with real samurai, hideyoshi was a peasant with no clan name, then he was adopted into the little known hashiba, and when he could not be given the title of regent because hashiba was a low birth samurai line, he got adopted again into a court family and changed his name to Toyotomi so he could be regent. Even Tokugawa was a liar, the Matsudaira clan was a middle tier samurai and not a court noble name, he had to falsely claim being from the Nitta court family who was from the Minamoto clan just to claim to be eligible to be Shogun. Ishida was not a warrior he was an administrator, he falsely reported back on the events on the Imjin War because the “diplomats” where afraid they would lose their heads if they reported back the truth to Toyotomi. Then during the disturbance of 1600 Ishida took the families of 200 daimyo hostages, when he took over Osaka castle when Tokugawa went to fight Uesugi in the East. Ishida wasn’t even allowed to lead the western army because he was a joke of a samurai, they had to get Mori to lead in name so the Army would have legitimacy. The Western army was defeated because it was an untrained, green army going up against battle harden troops because Tokugawa was smart enough to keep his troops out of the Korea wars. All of these stories making Ishida out to be a great warrior and commander were made up years later to down play the Tokugawa shogunate. Ishida doesn’t show up in ANY historical reference or records of THAT TIME until he was made a diplomat in 1595. The story of him drinking a puss filled tea cup was written 30 years later as propaganda during a time of rebellion against the shogunate. Oh an Toyotomi’s nephew wasn’t killed because he was trying to start a coup, he was forced to live in guarded conditions at a temple when Hideyori was born because Hidetsugu was a sicko doing a kinds of depraved shit, he lived for like two years at the temple, then Hideyoshi who was just as sick as him had him killed along with 24 women and 17 children.

Its funny since tokugawas regime promised a strong army of the aftermath but it was anything but strong. Which led to the westerns army victory in the end cause of the meiji restoration. Lets not forget tokugawa closed the borders cause of a personal vendetta. Ishida was way wiser for his years meanwhile tokugawa was narrowminded and thought only of his clan hold of power, which is why he stood out from korea. People had no Idea toyotomi would die during the 2nd war. Its clear WHO was the lesser out of the two.

He was never liked by the average japanese they just tolarated their rule cause they Said their army would be stonger then closed their country until real power came knocking. Which is why shimazu rebelled. Tokugawa Filled with lies and everyone saw it. Lets not forget the samurai became tokugawas lapdogs WHO were more of highway thugs than protectors which is why the meiji restoration had so many farmers on their side
