And, no shit. There I was. A green as hell soldier, stationed at Fort Campbell. The upstart TNA? Gave us free tickets, every week, to attend their shows at the Nashville fairgrounds. IE: "The TNA Arena." Not only were we given front row priority? But backstage access, as well. I've met SO many. From The Insane Clown Posse, to an upstart AJ Styles (after an Ultimate X Match win), to Sabu (who's broken English was fun as hell), to Raven (who's genuinely gotta be one of the funniest guys on this planet). It's little wonder, to me, that they still exist.

My dad and I went to one of their final house shows in Hobbs, New Mexico in Feb, 2002. It was awesome to see Roddy Piper and Terry Funk in person, Sable was there, and my dad struck up a conversion with Terry's wife Vicki about him being on police detail for the Amarillo territory shows. The thing I remember most though is they had a horrendous Ultimate Warrior ripoff wrestling either Vampiro or the Wall. The Warrior (I can't remember what they called him, but it was clearly a ripoff) was so bad the crowd started turning on the match. Main event was Funk against Greg Valentine.

This was a pretty fascinating time in wrestling. Back in the early 00’s, I didn’t have a computer. However, I always used to watch the TV Guide channel to see what’s on television. I remember being very intrigued by this XWF event on PPV. It wasn’t just them, there was also the WWA World Wrestling Allstars which had Jeff Jarrett, Bret Hart, Randy Savage, etc. Then NWA-TNA came into the scene with their new weekly PPV on Wednesdays. Definitely was a period which a variety of promotions tried to fill the void that WCW left. I never ordered any of these PPV’s and all I knew about them was their commercials.

The crowd was very optimistic as the attitude was this could work.
