29:30 "He took the smallest bite of pizza ever." Yep, that's a part of movie making. When actors have to eat in scenes, and those scenes are shot over and over and over, they start taking smaller and smaller bites, or even just shuffling food around on the plate. Watch from now on. You'll be amazed at how little food is actually eaten in movies, because actors start getting stuffed and even sick.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I was lucky enough to watch it in the theater. The fact that Jim Carrey and the movie got snubbed for Best Actor and Best Picture is still ridiculous to me. It seemed likejust science fiction back then, but with the way technology has progressed, a scaled-down version of this could totally happen. It's a special kind of paranoia. It makes you want to question your surroundings; how much of what we think is reality is actually real? Are you being watched? Is your family even your family? His gradual process of noticing things and slowly breaking it all down is always fun to watch. There are lots of little details that you'll only catch on a rewatch, like the "You Are Now Leaving Seahaven Island! Are You Sure It's A Good Idea?" sign just before he drives across the bridge. The production is really interesting; several things were changed between script drafts. One of the early scripts was much darker, with the fake setting being in New York, the escape being longer and more violent, including Truman shooting down a helicopter, going through the exit door and having him stealth his way out of the studio lot, holding a flare gun to a tour guide's head, and an in-person confrontation Christof. The sentence, "You never had a camera in my head" was always there, but it was in a darker context; originally, Truman said it as he was about to throw himself and Christof from the top of a building. You should check out the deleted scenes, too; one shows that Marlon actually found Truman during the search at the end, but deliberately let him escape. Regardless, there's no way the show would've lasted; the actors are terrible at improvising under unpredictable conditions, and Truman's natural curiosity was going to win out over fear in the long run. It's a great message about embracing one's nature, not denying it, taking risks, and seeking truth. And yeah, that's one of the best endings I've ever seen.

You HAVE to watch it again, you’ll notice so many details of ways they used subliminal messaging to keep Truman on the island- the sunken boat, the poster in the travel office, and a lot of other little stuff that seems just like regular movie humor the first time you watch, but the second time, you realize it’s all part of the scheme.

Comedians doing serious roles, can be some of their better work. You could put on a poll or try out: Jim Carrey in "the number 23" (drama suspense) and "Man on the Moon" (Comedy-drama biography of Andy Kaufman) and And instead of the "Ms Doubtfire" you've probably seen, try Robin Williams in "One hour photo" (suspense thriller).

We are all the stars of our own show, and sure, there’s a way out, but how many of us take that route? How many of us just allow our lives to unfold, subjected to forces outside of ourselves? to the whim of unseen masters? WE are the masters of our own destinies. WE have the control (as best can be achieved). If you feel like you are being pushed or it’s all unreal, push back. Forge a new reality.

This is one of my all time favorite movies, particularly the ending. You said that about “somebody’s getting fired for that” about all the screwups with the falling lamp, radio sound, rain just on him, etc. One thing I’ve been thinking about for years is that there’s obviously some kind of organized resistance trying to free Truman. Taking a close look at all the stuff on Sylvia’s walls, she’s working on getting people inside the system to sabotage the show. I think the resistance must have existed for Truman’s whole life, but Sylvia loving Truman made her that much more dedicated to the cause. I am thinking that yes, people probably lost their jobs for those mistakes, but I think those things weren’t accidental but rather the results of sabotage. I’d love to see a sequel where Sylvia and Truman get some kind of revenge and some peace and privacy.
@AtlanticGiantPumpkin
@AtlanticGiantPumpkin Жыл бұрын
I completely agree! With one exception: I think having a sequel would ruin the point of the show. There’s a reason we don’t see him again once he walks out that door. His life is his now. It’s not ours to view. His life is not for our viewing pleasure. We’ll have to be satisfied with not knowing.
@MarijnvdSterre
@MarijnvdSterre Жыл бұрын
That the radio in the car picks up the signal where they are talking about him is 100% sabotage imo. No way that would happen otherwise. As is the smuggling in of his father most likely. I do think the falling lamp was just wear and tear after 30 years of using it. That moment being used by the resistance to make their moves.

I love this theory about a possible resistance! I love the thought of people other than Sylvia caring about Truman's human rights and wellbeing, and wanting to stop the show. But I disagree on the movie needing a sequel. His story ended here for us, the audience. It should stay that way. Perhaps if there was a new character introduced as the protagonist we "follow", that could be neat. Or even a prequel about how this whole sick mess started.

I remember watching this in the theater when it first came out. There were a lot of laughs in the audience but when it got to the final boat scene, the whole room fell silent. I cried and I know I heard sniffling around me. Jim Carrey is a funny dude but he's been a few movies that have a completely different feel to them. There's this, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Man on the Moon and one of my favorites simply for how dark and different it is, The Number 23. He's a talented man.

I went with my mom to watch it in the theater, too. I remember having the right idea, except I applied it the other way - since I was 11 when I saw it, I wasn't quite smart enough to understand it, so I remember thinking that Truman was an actor at first, not the other way around. Once my mom explained it to me, I watched the last 20 minutes or so much differently.

"Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!" Fun Fact: Ed Harris and Jim Carrey never met during filming. Medical Cameo Fact: In an early scene, a bottle of Vitamin D is on Truman and Meryl's kitchen table, needed for those without exposure to the (real) sun. Trumania Nation Fact: The Trumania bits, where Truman draws on the mirror with soap and acts strange, was completely improvised by Jim Carrey. Carrey and Peter Weir initially found working together on set difficult (Carrey's contract gave him the power to demand rewrites), but Weir was impressed with Carrey's improvisational skills, and the two became more interactive.

There was a mention in a behind the scenes bit about the fact that Meryl (really the actress playing Meryl) was the highest paid acting person on the show and was I believe a billionaire by the point that the movie happens. She got proceeds from a clothing line that sold all of the outfits she wore on the show, she got proceeds from all of the products she modeled and touted throughout. She didn't NEED to keep acting. She wanted that lime light. Same with his friend and most of the "main cast".

I've loved this movie since I saw it in theaters. The ending details were some of the best: the "I am the creator.....of a television show" guy (that line got a laugh in the theater since his hubris was so obvious) PLAYING God while his girlfriend is, literally praying to the REAL God to help free him. The two guys representing the worldwide audience, just like you said, are going to just turn the channel looking for something else. The fact that we don't get to see what happened to Truman later. If he were a real person, he'd have the right to live the rest of his life without a camera on him. Except maybe in the courtroom when he's suing the SHIT out of Christof. LOL

@robertsmalls3513
@robertsmalls3513 Жыл бұрын
@@scipioafricanus5871I would say yes there is grounds for a lawsuit on the grounds of fraud, false imprisonment, and potentially attempted murder. He didn’t want Truman to leave because that was his cash cow, and he attempted to kill Truman with the storm at the end. Truman never gave permission to be on a tv show, even as an adult. The corporation could get away with it for childhood for being the “parent” but the adult years is definitely non consensual life path.

The Majestic and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are a couple Jim Carrey movies that are similar in tone to this one. Like the Truman Show, they are more heartwarming than comedic, and Jim Carrey plays the lead in them more straight than he usually does. The Majestic is a Capra-esque feel good movie. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a surreal romance. Both are definitely worth watching. And if you really want to see Jim Carrey show a different side, his movie the Number 23 was a light horror/thriller, no comedy, and it was good, definitely worth watching.

If you want to see another movie that shows the extent of Jim Carrey's range as an actor, beyond just comedic roles, check out The Number 23 (2007).

19:25 He's breaking the clutch intentionally so he has plausible deniability for not taking Truman anywhere. Love how all the other passengers immediately dart out of their seats lol

Another great movie to watch with Jim Carrey in a dramatic role is Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. Such a mind trip and an overall great movie that im sure you'll love as well.

@@EOMReacts ~ He also plays a very different type of role (a bit on the noir dark side), called 'Number 23' that I would highly recommend, it really pulls you into a strange world.

There are probably more elements of truth depicted here in this movie about the "True Man Show," than most would like to think.

Another amazing dramatic performance by Jim Carey is called The Majestic, and then Man on the Moon may be his best work ever. But don't sleep on Liar Liar, and the dark comedy The Cable Guy.

A nice reaction to a great movie, your conclusion alone on this I will watch again sometime. If you feel like watching a movie with Jim Carey that is not only funny but also has a surprising depth, I recommend "Bruce Almighty" (2003), in which Morgan Freeman also impressed with his performance.

The Majestic is another good non-silly Jim Carrey movie. It was directed by the same guy who did The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile - but it's not a prison movie.

If you notice, the end of the film doesn't show any of Truman's actions after he steps through the door, because he's now beyond the reach of the cameras that had been watching him. That is, we only ever see Truman through the eyes of the Truman Show audience; once he steps outside the dome, we can't see him anymore.

Watch the 2008 movie Yes Man, starring Jim Carey. Surprisingly serious, but funny movie. It co-stars Hangover's star Bradley Cooper and many other strong performers.

This is a great movie. So glad you liked it. To your statement that you're surprised they haven't tried it yet, you REALLY need to watch Ed TV with Mathew McConaughey. It's also a great movie but a LOT more plausible.

'The Man in the Moon''.....Have you ever seen that? I'm pretty sure that was the title. Andy Kaufman's life story starring Jim Carey. I read the book. THAT dude was strange.

I agree with all the comments recommending Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Majestic. I would also recommend Man On The Moon, in which Jim Carrey gives possibly his best acting performance (should’ve gotten a Best Actor Oscar win or nomination, imo) playing the legendary comedian and actor Andy Kaufman. He was perfect in the role, and as diverse and unique as Andy was, that’s no small feat.
