I love that the ending doesn't show us what happens to Truman after he leaves - because just like the "viewers" of his TV show, we no longer get to peek in on his private life. He's free of them, AND free of us. :)

In the theatre, when it looked like he was still being tricked after his 'dad' came back... The next morning he's doing his spaceman thing, the theatre was dead silent cause we were like... noooo... they've still got him. Then he says "That's one's for free." - We were like... 'omg! he knows!' and then we all broke out in cheers and applause. It was one of those theater moments you always remember.

"Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!" Fun Fact: Ed Harris and Jim Carrey never met during filming. Medical Cameo Fact: In an early scene, a bottle of Vitamin D is on Truman (Jim Carrey) and Meryl's (Laura Linney) kitchen table, needed for those without exposure to the (real) sun. What Script Fact: The Trumania bits, where Truman draws on the mirror with soap and acts strange, was completely improvised by Jim Carrey. Carrey and Peter Weir initially found working together on set difficult (as Carrey's contract gave him the power to demand rewrites), but Weir was impressed with Carrey's improvisational skills and the two became more interactive.

The subtle hints that things are not right are actually hidden everywhere throughout the movie. The scene when Truman begins to piece things together and is freaking out, he goes to see his friend who's stocking a vending machine, the whole thing wasn't planned as part of the show so the guy doesn't have enough candy to actually stock the machine. If you watch the scene, as soon as truman turns away, the guy reaches in and takes some of the candy back out of the machine so he can keep stoking it.

This is such a fantastic movie and one of if not my very favorite Jim Carrey role. It came out largely before "reality TV" became a Thing so the concept was rather novel. If I remember correctly, since it's been a minute since this released. lol

Your observation of Truman’s new love interest wearing a red sweater made my jaw drop!!! I’ve watched this movie sooooo many times and didn’t even realize! WOW!!! Also, the tunnel Truman escaped through had to have taken awhile. It was in the beginning of the movie he was gardening and then throughout. He knew then but got extra confirmation when the weirder stuff started to happen Great reaction per usual 😊

@@MavenCree I think you misunderstood the theory that was proposed above. The theory is that he didn't drive the bus because he was told to, after which he felt very bad for Truman and apologised. Later in the boat, he pretended to not be able to sail it to give Truman a chance to escape, since he was still feeling bad for Truman.

I feel like it'd be a tragedy. He barely got to know Sylvia, and we're all different people as adults from who we were in high school, at least to some degree. She still got to see him every day on TV, but all he had was a memory of, at most, a few hours with her. And she lived her life and likely became rather bitter and pessimistic as we saw on her phone call that she made this a political movement. It'd be an unbalanced relationship dynamic. And everyone in the outside world would know his face. He'd be pestered and followed by random people, making his life miserable. He'd probably be able to raise money, or get some somehow, since he has no real world money (unless there was some legal thing that he technically had a bank account with some kind of royalties...). People would try to take advantage of him in other ways. I feel like he'd hear the words in his head, on repeat, "There's no more truth out there than in here" as he continues to get manipulated and feel isolated.
@PhilBagels
@PhilBagels 9 ай бұрын
He has no job skills on the outside world. He doesn't necessarily even know if he can sell insurance. Inside, he makes the sale when the script calls for him to make the sale, and he doesn't if he doesn't. He's never interacted with a real person who wasn't following a script. However, he can call up a lawyer and sue the producer, the director, and all the sponsors for ALL of their profits for the past 30 years! I can't help but wonder why no law enforcement ever tried to prevent this massive crime that was being broadcast on television! And once he's out, how can he interact with anyone? Everyone who ever watched the show is complicit in the crime against him. He'd pretty much have to hate the whole world that just stood by and watched him being enslaved.

@Galiant2010

He was truly on Truman's side. That's why he apologized after everyone else got off, he meant it. But later he realized he could redeem himself in the same way by doing the same thing to the boat they were going to send out after Truman. Just mess up the engine to let Truman get away. And everyone else buys it, rationalizing it because "They're actors!" It's really not that hard to drive a bus or a boat. There are technical things to know about doing it properly, and maintenance, but starting them up and getting moving is easy lol.

Yes, that line was eye opening. I was raised very religious. And even though I had seen this movie multiple times before, I watched it again while going through a falling out with the religion I was raised with. And everything just made sense. Why there are so many religions out there, and why they all think they're the right one. Because that's just the reality that most of them were raised with.

17:09 I don't think it's that the bus driver doesn't know how to drive the bus, but more the exchanged look was, "you can't take this man anywhere," because, where would they go? He's intentionally grinding the gears to fake a mechanical issue and get everyone off the bus. Presumably the bus actually drives around as part of the experience. Although arguably one thing I think would have made the pretense more effective is if more of the "background" characters were just legitimately going about their day do real work. Some of it might be set dressing, but why wouldn't that one building have a functioning elevator there instead of a set? Why wouldn't you have real doctors on staff at the set hospital? It may not require the same frequency of care other real hospitals would have, but people on "set" would still get sick from time to time. Truman would occasionally get sick and need to see a doctor. Besides lending to the authenticity, it's just practical if the grocery store is a real grocery store. Do all of the background actors leave the dome at night or live in the homes? Is there a commissary? It would actually be kind of interesting to see the concept of the movie as a series where they could do a deeper dive into the lie and how long they could keep him in the dark.

The moment that the moon becomes a searcjligjt it brings to mind thise movies and series where someone is in a perfect fantasy world but they say or do the wrong thing or get suspicious and the food turns to maggots and stuff The little details of the scene are so perfect with the moon with the choreographed movements of everyone becoming an audible march, Pluto snarling and baring his teeth aggressively, his 'parents'speakong coldly about tricking him and the oddball twins shedding their nebbish characters to bark orders profanely

You're the most perceptive reactor I've seen! Accurately figuring it out before the mid movie explanation! Have you noticed how the fake sun & moon simply trade places, instead of chasing each other across the sky? The fun part is watching this a second time, & spotting all the cameras in plain sight! Sylvia is part of a movement trying to end the show. Did you see all the posters in her apartment? The cop who inexplicably knew Truman's name was probably home watching the show before he got the call to come & do a bit role! I figure the mainland is part of backstage, where they store larger props; & if Truman hadn't been stopped on the road, he'd have ended up at the soundstage doors that admit trailers w helicopters; & off island cars/visitors into the set. Most buildings are probably mockups. The hospital set is where Meryl goes daily to get off camera & visit with family. There are a few functional non set "sets" in case a real doctor has to come treat a real emergency. For example, if young Truman had tonsillitis & had to be rushed to the hospital; or if his fake mom got kidney stones... Everything Truman's been exposed to is fake for the show, even the news. Here's my idea for a plausible sequel: documentary format with a narrator talking about his exposure to the real world, & his reunion w Sylvia. Camera coverage provided by cellphones, traffic cam, security cameras, ATM cams, news choppers, reporters where the camera glimpsed them in the background, stalkers; & paparazzi. We learn about Christoff's legal woes, how audience pushback forced the studio to offer Truman 30 years back pay; & we hear speculation where Truman & Sylvia dropped off the radar to.

Can you imagine how much that would break a person....I don't need to imagine it. I experienced it. The whole thing Truman goes through, is almost identical to what the waking up process is that leads to enlightenment. The realization that everything you knew, the entire world itself, all your beliefs, EVERYTHING was FALSE. It destroys the mind, aka the ego. It looks like a mental break down, and if you go through the journey you end up enlightened. You end up realizing that our entire "world" as humans on this planet is just a damn dream. It's all phony, there was never even a you. No anyone, never was, never will be. It's a big pill to swallow. But what the Truman show is covering is not just a fictional movie, it is already happening, not in the scale of paid actors are around you, but everyone s trying to be someone for the world, everyone is fake as shit. We seek and attach onto other human characters who we find have "better" or more exciting lives then are own, and we wish we had their life, yet ironically how can you when your life is fake and just watching other fake lives?
