Germans like to drink their beer out of fancy antique steins with lids... right?
Well... no. And what you're picturing in your mind is probably a tourist souvenir.

It's not terribly long ago that I learned what English speakers actually mean when they talk about "steins". If a tourist had asked me 10 years ago where they could buy one, I would probably have sent them to the nearest gardening supply store and I assume they wouldn't have been suitably impressed.

The lid was not originally designed to keep insects out - but simply to keep the beer in when you carried it around. When botteled beer was still a luxury, people often got their beer in taverns to take home, or more often, send their kids to get it.

Pfälzisch ist prob. the dialect the word "stein" came into the American language (--> e.g. Pennsilfaanisch, Amish). And it's also the only German dialect that even uses the word "Stein(-krug)" for a beer mug. Although, not many American would understand the word in Pfälzisch.. "Haajo, na net groine, awwer mer hänn kää Schdääh." Other words are much more common in German: (Bier-)Seidel, (Äbbelwoi-)Bembel, Krügel, Humpen..

I'd like to add that personalized steins are still used as memorabilia in the german armed forces (Bundeswehr) today, but not everywhere and in every unit as it seems to be a dying tradition. But in case this tradition is kept alive it is quite common that the steins are put to their purposefully use on party like meet-ups of the NCO or officer corps. For these occasions the active member's steins are often kept in the NCO's or officer's club behind the bar as long as their owners serve on active duty in that unit. Often the steins are given as memorabilia to relocationed or retiring soldiers. Sometimes the steins are kept in the club permanently to remember / being able to welcome "home" those who left. The exact deal all around the stein's traditions may vary from location to location or even unit to unit on same location.

You aren’t even allowed to serve beer or any „foaming“ drinks in non transparent mugs (when selling it). The reason is that you can‘t see the mark (Eichstrich) where you could check if you got what you paid for.

Hahaha.. I just read the corresponding German law (MessEV). As a customer, you have the right to demand that beer is filled, in front of your eyes, into a real measuring device, to check the amount.

Dear Andrew, in my area (the Palatinate) "Stein" indeed is the name for a beer mug (ceramic or glass) that holds one litre. You can see them at festivals and normally they contain beer or beer mixes like Radler or Cola-Bier. The other common size is 0.5 litres and called "Schoppen". They are used for wine and wine mixes like "Saure Schorle", "Süße Schorle", Cola-Rot, Cola-Weiß und Trollschoppen (wine and sparkling wine). CU twinmama

The aristocracy of Estonia were Lutheran and German speaking so I assume the steins came that way to Estonia. The problem is that english speakers abbreviate things using only the first descriptive part of German compound words rather than the second main part hence they call Bratwurst 'Brat" which just means 'fry' and thus makes no sense to Germans. "Steinzeug" is the German word for "earthenware". Those typical and mass-produced pots of greyish earthenware is glazed with salt. The chloride evaporates in the kiln and the sodium reacts with the silicates. Before glazing some patterns were painted on those pots and jars with a blue colour. The "brother" of those "Reservistenkrüge" that men bought or were presented with when having done their service is the "Reservistenpfeife". As is the case with the beer mugs they are from porcellain which allows fine decorations in the newly developed lithograph technology. The head of those pipes are covered with a lid, a precaution against sparks flying all over the place, burning the furniture or table-cloths or causing forest fires. They are indeed collectors items by now.

Earthenware is a Porous type of ware often needing a Tin or lead glaze. The Steins you are referring to are stoneware and are completely vitrified. The salt glaze simply enhances the surface of them but is not a necessity as with earthenwares 👍🏻

Well, a Stein in the Palatinian dialect is what a Maß is in Bavarian. Yes, these "stones" are made out of glass too, usually.

The "souvenir" was once called "Resvervistenkrug". It literally was a souvenir for people who served in the armies of the German nations between 1871 and 1914 in order to remind them of a "happy time". After 1914 times were not so happy anymore. The owner and his regiment were hand painted on it's base. It was a common practice to put a hole in it's bottom when it's owner died so nobody was able to drink out of it anymore. The tin cap cap was later mostly sold for scrap metal.

Another little correction: Beer steins are somewhat valuable, since it's rather easy to find collectors. Even on flea markets they are often offered at rather high prices.

To call them "stein" is not completely wrong. It probably came, because at first they were made from "Steingut", which is more ceramic than stone..
