There is DEFINITELY a difference between engaging your core muscles and squeezing out a deuce, haha! It may take some practice to learn the difference, but it's there. Great tips, as always, Brian!

Watching and rewatching those breathing and bracing videos has been the single biggest breakthrough in my 1RM work. Its amazing how light previously heavy weight feels when you're doing those things correctly and how not doing them sets you up for failure.

as many others have already chimed in with - your breathing and bracing concepts have helped my lifting more than any other single aspect of my training. I will never lift numbers that impress anyone but whatever I am lifting I am sure doing it safer! Thanks, Brother!

100% spot on, it's so paramount that it's practically my sole focus on squats, if I'm locked in with my brace my legs will drive it no problem... if my brace is off then I can feel things break down in my core and thus lose the transfer power of what the legs can generate.

This resonates with me a lot. Most of the back tweaks I’ve gotten in the past were in warm up sets before I realized I should lift as aggressively in the warmup sets as I do with working sets to really prep the body/mind. Great vid 💪

I actually got a hemorrhoid because I was bracing so well. All that pressure migrated down and found release in my pelvic floor. In fact, you should be doing the opposite of pooping your pants while lifting. You should actively engage your pelvic floor during squats and other lifts (ie do kegels and try to flex the muscles that keep you from peeing/pooping).

That's what I do. I don't care if it's light I tighten up like it's heavy because I need to have the endurance for when it is heavy. The one exception would be really light, or deload workouts. Then I actually hold my abs in position without holding my breath to work on breathing in between reps. That's actually why I like doing heavy walkouts and heavy unracks before sets on my heavy days. I wanna get those stabalizers firing above where they are for the rest of the week. It looks stupid, but I stock beer for a living, which is basically cardio. I practice saving energy all day, so I have to do that to switch gears, or I end up in my default setting.

Squat is a core exercise is a bit of a hot take. I’d say it doesn’t become a legs exercise until you’ve mastered bracing!

Thank you so much for this. This was the missing piece for me - I'm working my way back up after a really rough training year (major life stress/changes) and cannot figure out why everything still feels heavy even though my recovery is good and my programming is sane. It's because I stopped trying so hard when I was under all that stress! I forgot how to strain!

As part of my squat warm up I’ve been doing overhead squats with just the bar (a bit wider than a clean grip, you definitely want it closer than a snatch grip) because it feels horrendous without bracing

If you're breathing and bracing properly, your legs will push whatever you put on your back...until they won't. Found that out the hard way tearing a quad during a sub maximal front squat. Bryan, any chance you do rehab strength programming?

Papa Brian bringing knowledge to the masses. Your thoughts on pullups and chinups. More reps lighter weight or more weight less reps? I'm at the point where I can do sets of 10 for both.

Aloha Brian! Do you think it’s possible to brace just as hard without a belt? Or is that abs meeting the belt is just perfect? Like a wall that can’t be pushed over, just constant pressure meeting resistance for a stronger can/core? Thank you for all you do!!!!! I’m a very strong leg presser, but squat and deadlift have stayed in the 400’s for a while now due to going to snap city with hips getting pulled out by my muscles. :/
