I think Neon is spot on with the escaping her destiny theory. And that she isn't able to completely get rid of her elder blood "curse". Fits with the monster in the trailer (who feeds on people's insecurities) telling her that "fate cannot be changed". And also the teaser from one of the devs with the coin that says "the blood remains the same". As long as they tell it in a way that doesn't feel cheap, I'm all for it.

19:50 Before the final battle in the Witcher 3, there is a quest where you have to help Ciri and meeting some of the friends she made in Novigrad. At the end of which, Geralt and Ciri have a conversation, where she basically tells Geralt that she hates having these powers, because it deprived her of ever living a normal live. Being a Witcher is anything but normal, but she did point out (and I think more than once) that she'd much rather get rid of those powers, if she had the choice.

I kind of assumed that maybe the reason Ciri's powers are absent in the reveal trailer is because after the defeat of the White Frost her Elder Blood powers have been diminished and that's why she feels she needs to take on some form of the Trial of the Grasses. I suspect that after she goes through the Trial her Elder Blood powers will be enhanced, and we will be able to get abilities through like a specific Elder Blood Skill tree. That's at least my theory for why maybe she goes through the Trial.

Quote from Witcher book. Blood of Elves. Triss POV in that moment. "Is she . . . Yes. She was the real reason behind her visit to Kaer Morhen. The ashblonde girl who, here in Kaer Morhen, they want to turn into a witcher. A real witcher. A mutant. A killing machine, like themselves. It’s clear, she suddenly thought, feeling a passionate arousal of an entirely different nature. It’s obvious. They want to mutate the child, subject her to the Trial of Grasses and Changes, but they don’t know how to do it. Vesemir was the only witcher left from the previous generation, and he was only a fencing instructor. The Laboratorium, hidden in the vaults of Kaer Morhen, with its dusty demi-johns of elixirs, the alembics, ovens and retorts . . . None of the witchers knew how to use them. The mutagenic elixirs had been concocted by some renegade wizard in the distant past and then perfected over the years by the wizard’s successors, who had, over the years, magically controlled the process of Changes to which children were subjected. And at a vital moment the chain had snapped. There was no more magical knowledge or power. The witchers had the herbs and Grasses, they had the Laboratorium. They knew the recipe. But they had no wizard. Who knows, she thought, perhaps they have tried? Have they given children concoctions prepared without the use of magic? She shuddered at the thought of what might have happened to those children." She literally thinks they want to make Ciri a Witcher. Nothing about her gender making it impossible.

Kind of a moot point since you're citing a passage that comes AFTER the loss of critical knowledge regarding the trials. Most men don't survive the Trial of Grasses - especially the weaker ones. It may not be explicitly stated that women can't become witchers, but after two canonical failures - it's implied.
@Dak162413 күн бұрын
@ It’s only canonical in games thanks to Ttrpg not even video games. Same as a thing called Witcher schools are only games canon. Recently Sapkowski said in interview that people misinterpreted Witcher medallions as different schools which is wrong. For example in the newest book released one month ago we have a Witcher with a viper medallion but he comes from Kaer Morhen. A place where Witchers with wolf medallion trained. CDPR can easily ignore that ttrpg since even author of books doesn’t acknowledge that thing. So you can see how much stuff CDPR makes to have lore. For example in Witcher 1 we have Alvin who is a source. When actually in the book canon it’s clearly stated that only female can be a source. Men can have a gene of elder blood but will not be active.

Admittedly i was perplexed by the trailer, and even if some time has passed I found it clashing against my expectations of who Ciri is. By what I remember from the books, she unique not only as being the embodiment of the Elder Blood, but also because she also was a witcher (trained, not in essence) AND also a sorceress (also trained, by Yennefer in Aretuza, where they developed their mother-daughter relationship before being split during the Thanned coup, and not in essence). Now, she could blink/phase as an innate power, which is with all probability due to her being the Elder Blood incarnation, but she also had to stop the Great Frost because of that. Her blinking powers could have "run out" by stopping the Great Frost and thus fulfilling the Elder Blood prophecy. Or not. Maybe itll be a point of plot where itll be explained why she cant (won't?) blink anymore. What makes me pause is why she drinks the bad witcher potions and use cheap witcher signs which are but a bad abridged magic version of the more powerful and complete magic sorceresses can wield. Either she chose to undergo the trial of grasses rather than the final surgery to becoming a sorceress. Honestly speaking, I would trust CDPR not to screw the Witcher's saga. As you correctly said, it's a Polish pride. Can't hide my perplexity to be honest, I am not as hyped as when I saw TW3 first cinematic trailer where I broke an office chair by jumping on it while it went on. Let's see. I have no problem with her being the protagonist... but I wish I got to play Ciri. Based on the trailer (and I could be wrong, I love CDPR. W3 is my favorite game ever and Cyberpunk 2077 was awesome) - how Ciri acts, looks and the general vibe I don't feel like I'm going to be playing Ciri. I just feel like I'm going to be playing 'girl Geralt'. And if that is the case, I'd rather play Geralt. Hell, I'd rather play a Yennefer game than that.

Ciri should have her own game series and tie it to Cyberpunk too as she had already teleported to 2077. As a female I prefer to play as a male unless I'm character creating. My favourite men have been: Max Payne, took 20years off. Now retired, Geralt, Joel, Arthur Morgan, Deacon St John. This girl boss thing is boring now, I played all the Tomb raiders but Lara's character was never well written.

Yes but her not being a Witcher in Witcher 4 would have meant missing out on many gameplay mechanics. For example you wouldn't be able to use potions so the whole alchemy aspect of the previous games wouldn't be possible. Same for all the Witcher spells like Quen, Aard and different builds you can do based on them So the fact that she's a Witcher means way more gameplay mechanics and possible builds compared if she wasn't

@@susan7527it’s insane to me that you think the reason they’re making her a Witcher and the protagonist is some sort of agenda. It’s clear that they’ve been planning this since before Witcher 3 came out as that whole game is about setting her up as the protagonist going forward. That being as a male I don’t care who I’m playing as so long as the game is well written. Joel is a great character and so is Ellie. Abbey is also just as well written a character for that matter. Do I like Abbey? No, but her story arc is integral to the theme of the revenge tale that is TLoU Part 2 and I don’t like her character because she’s a terrible human being who relishes killing and torturing (before the events we play as her and her accomplishing her revenge against Joel) people. Joel is one of the greatest video game protagonists of all time but in terms of quality of writing so is Ellie and Abbey. It’s not as if having the central character of a story be a badass woman is a new concept. It’s been around in media forever. It’s just that nowadays the go to method is writing those characters to be basically unlikable. It’s the Captain Marvel effect. Once they made Carol Danvers CM in the comics her character was almost immediately written to be smug and irrational and that carried over to her movie counterpart being written basically the exact same way she’s portrayed in the comics and it’s unfortunate because female badass’ deserve better treatment. It’s just the hack method shit trope writing. Not the fact that the character is a woman.

@@mordor1779 Right. Because she wasn't a mutated Witcher. So she would have played like Ciri and not like Geralt (or another Witcher). That is the point. If I am going to play a Ciri game, I'd prefer to play a Ciri game. Not a Ciri as a mutated Witcher game - since then it isn't a Ciri game. It is just a reskinning of Geralt game. Your explanation is more what I think actually motivated CDPR than them thinking it was a great story hook or something they had determined for Ciri. I think they knew they wanted her as the main character, but they told themselves "We cannot have a game called The Witcher and have the main character not be a mutated Witcher." I don't get why people NEED a big ol reason why Ciri wants to be a witcher, she's always taken after Geralt more than Yennefer or the sorceresses so as opposed to undergoing the Aretuza sterilization she might have just as well undergone the witcher one. Not wanting babies is not that hard to justify for Ciri if you have read the books especially, SPOILER ---- even her own father wanted to impregnate her for her elder blood SPOILER OVER. As for how this will affect her elder powers in-game combat and not have her be OP, well in witcher 3 the teleportation dodging was on a cool down similar to castings signs was for Geralt, so there's the solution, she can have a limited amount of elder abilities on a cooldown like Geralt's signs.

My, Ciri is Daenerys Targaryen theory: Geralt once told Ciri (in the books) that although no woman had *yet* survived the trial of grasses, it’s *not* impossible…and as a result Ciri decides to undergo the trial of grasses-specifically to nerf her blood/powers/fertility to *nullify* the prophecy- with more *certainty* than any spell (there are some things spells just *can’t* do- like restore Yennefer’s fertility (books), remove Geralt’s marks in Heart of Stone…or *undo* his Witcher mutations for that matter), concerning her offspring either being the world’s savior or destroyer. However, not only does it *not* work, but her *fertility* remains intact: rendering Ciri the first *ElderWitcher* = a Witcher who is able to reproduce and pass on Witcher mutations. Thus, by the end of her trilogy she will birth the first fertile mutant children, bringing Witchers *back* to the world (like how Daenerys brought dragons *back* to the world) *without* the trials *or* child surprises. Ciri will be crowned- not as *Empress* , but as *Mother of Mutants*

I see certain things in the books (so far, I’m only partway through the 2nd book) that I feel hint strongly at this kind of outcome: How Geralt points out that not *all* sorceresses are infertile (citing his *own* mother) saying, “Something can’t be a rule if there are exceptions to it.” It could be that Ciri becomes one such exception. Geralt also responds to a question about *his* purpose/destiny by saying, “Mutants *have no parents and no destiny* “ (Speaking of Witchers *and* Golden dragons- a species of dragon he at first *insists* don’t exist, only to meet one in the very next chapter). However, Ciri is the *child* of destiny. She could be the first to give a Witcher something none of them have ever had- a *parent* ! Can you imagine if Ciri’s children end up with a sort of *Elder-gene* ? A gene that grants them certain *unique gifts* ? We could end up with medieval X-men on our hands! Can’t you just *hear* that theme song being played on Dandelion’s lute?! 🤩😎
@danielreynolds163215 күн бұрын
I also see possible parallels with Ciri and Xena. For starters, they’re both *warrior princesses* ! But Xena at one point had a *dark* chapter in her life and later on had a *prophesied* child that would bring about the *end* of the Olympian Gods- resulting in her living on the run from them whilst trying to protect her baby. Ciri could end up on the run from certain groups like the Lodge of Sorceresses perhaps? After they decide her and her child are too much of a threat to their power/influence? That could end in a standoff between Yen and them… Obviously only time will tell but I *like* the idea of the devs drawing inspiration from more *modern fantasies* like game of thrones, Xena, X-men etc. Either way, I’m sure it’ll be *epic* and I cannot wait! 😁

Even though it's called the "Elder Blood" her powers are not actually in her blood Per se. Ciri's powers come from an unspecified gene called "Lara Dorren's gene" in the books and games which is the genetic material that grant her her powers. So considering the Trial of the Grasses literally alters one's genome it's likely that she went through it to "erase" her ancestry and escape her fate, her destiny.

The main complaint about Ciri as a witcher is why would she do that??? Already in the book, she was a carrier of super strength, i.e. she was a fucking strong magician, and since she had undergone witcher training, she was also great with a sword. According to the book the Witcher, her future was discussed in Kaer Morhen, saying the following: "she is not destined to be a witcher, but she can be a warrior without problems." In general, she doesn't need to be a witcher because it doesn't make sense! She's strong and cool without witchcraft. And she called herself a witcher in the book because it was just childish foolishness and then simple self-affirmation. And the adult witchers called her the same way a dad can call his son a hero and his daughter a princess. That is, it was all childish and playing along with adults. The SDPR took Ciri because they need a woman. And they made her a witcher only because the players want to see a witcher in a game called the Witcher.
@Smol_Turtle15 күн бұрын
Right? Like she was already a bamf, there was no need to tack on witcher to her resume with her being an actual witcher. In fact, I think it would arguably be more interesting that she uses the title without mutations, and she has to grasp with the changing world and how to come to terms that her 'witcher' family is slowly fading and she could very well be the last one and how she could carry that mantle forward.

@@seanfoodysmith3227 Sorry dude, but I've read all the books. And in one of them there was a scene where Ciri walked through the desert and at the end of this path she invoked a power that even Enifer and the older wizards were afraid to deal with - the power of fire. And there she refused it because she was afraid of the summoning of the spirit of Falka, who called her to become the destroyer of worlds. With a single click, she gave up the force, which means that her willpower is enough to control her power, and the curse of her power was solely due to heredity. In general, this scene shows Ciri's metamorphosis as a person, when she experimented with herself, it's just like a teenager looking for himself in life, first rebelling against himself, and then accepting. Keep in mind, dude, that the writers of the СDPR are not the authors of the original story, they are not even close to Sapkovsky and do not know the motives that he put into his characters. I'll tell you this, I came to books after the games, and the way I saw the characters in the book, after that I can't take the games seriously because they're just cheap fanfiction from the CDPR and there's no philosophy in them at all. The only advantage of games is that they convey high-quality images of characters and no more. What the developers did in part 4 is simple marketing, they want to sell us a story with characters that are beneficial to them. Geralt does not fit into the modern picture of the world. And Ciri is the only compromise option.

Secondly, the decisions of the СDPR break the logic of the narrative, and all the fans saw this trash, which made them indignant. Next, which book experts are we talking about, the dude who was hired by the CDPR and who was seen attacking fans of the game? And what does this expert know more than me?? The witcher's ENT is simple to the point of outrage because the narrative is linear and was not originally thought out as an advanced universe, but only as a backdrop for the events of the books. There is no mystery in the creation of witchers. Sapkovsky initially mentioned the witcher laboratory in volume 3, pointed out that Ciri was unsuitable for the role of a witcher, and in general, all witchers! And Sapkovsky did not return to this topic in the story anymore. And when the author got tired of the story of Geralt and Ciri, he literally destroyed Geralt and never returned to him, starting a new trilogy, "The Saga of Reinevan", which no one got. And even now, when Sapkovsky needs money, even now he does not continue the tale of the witcher and Ciri, but only writes collections of stories about the witcher's past in the style of the first two volumes about the witcher.

@@onabiv People have said the story is almost as good as TW3, I'd think you'd agree TW3 has the best story out of all of the Witcher games. There's 3 Witcher games, and four times as many books. There's only one CDPR Cyberpnk game. So Witcher has a huge advantage, CP needs time to cook as a franchise, needs more entries. You didn't even beat the game, but it's your right to not like it anyway. Doesn't mean it's bad, because it isn't even if it's not _as good_ as TW3. The core of the game isn't bad either, they just took a far different creative direction with it. The sequel will prove to be a far better product in every way, just like TW3 was to TW2, and that to TW1.

When I saw the trailer for The Witcher 4, I wasn't at all surprised by the fact that she is a witcher. In the books and the game, it always seemed to me that this was her desire. Moreover, something that fits the theme is her wanting to escape her own destiny, and I also think she took the witcher trials as a way to uphold the tradition with the other witchers. This is my theory, what do you think?
@Bucktopus3715 күн бұрын
I'm sorry but the only reason one would reject the idea that a woman can become a witcher is straight up misogyny. There have always been women in fiction who defy the odds even when the people around them say otherwise. It's a tale almost as old as the Hero's Journey itself. Hell... in Halo, the Spartan IIs went through a similar process to receive their augments and no one batted an eye that 14 of the survivors were female. Just say you hate women and your argument will at least make some form of sense.

I noticed they called Ciri a Witcher, but we all have the IQ to know they didn't mean she was a literal one, I mean they even make it a point to emphasize the difference in-game when Ciri never uses potions, only blade oils. It was already a big source of conflict to use the Trial on Uma and Triss already voiced concerns about Ciri eating the far less dangerous supplements. The reason for Ciri to take the trials and somehow even survive has to be extremely convincing... something I fear they won't be able to pull off. I still remember the side quest where you feed a dying woman Swallow, and it cripples her for life, wiping out her memory and function as a person.

@NorthzYT she gives birth to a all powerful evil magic child according to the prophecy so yh she probably begin altruistic by thinking if I go sterile then destiny doesn't happen. Sounds like ripe story telling if u ask me but hey apparently alot of us aren't imaginative enough -_-
@Dak162414 күн бұрын
Easy explanation. First. Ciri always wanted to be a Witcher. Second in books everyeone wanted Ciri to put a child in her. So her knowing that through the mutation she will not be able to have kids anymore she would be more eager to go through this. Two birds with one stone for Ciri in that moment. I think Witcher 4 might be Ciri's unborn child. After all Bauk in teaser says to Ciri that fate cannot be changed.

People are no concerned about the lore, they are just unironically being anti-woman, not saying sexist, saying anti-woman, they use it as justifcation, why? Then I assume you didn't like any of the games because the books end with Geralt and Yennifer dying and Ciri becoming the new main character and declares herself a Witcher. The lore has been ignored since Witcher 1, no one is worried about that. Their concerns have nothing to do with the lore.

There was a new conjunction at the end of the main story in W3, which would explain why there are actually more monsters in W4 (or at least new ones). Since she was responsible for that conjunction (with the help of Avallac'h), she feels she has an obligation to rid the world of them, hence her decision to undergo the trials. Also, the idea if she wishes to prevent others from taking advantage of the Elder Blood in the future, she could decide to undergo the trials because Witchers are infertile.
@tranceform945915 күн бұрын
I believe Ciri controversy in W4 is mostly AOE damage from much of the identity politics bs that has been rampant in western society. If they lazily contrive the reasoning in the story, it can be a problem. I currently don't see an authentic indication that CDPR will do that. As long as they learn from the mistakes of cyberpunk launch, and continue improvements to gameplay, systems and mechanics as they have, this will be a terrific game. No doubt the aesthetic and atmosphere will be top tier. Weather animosity from a culture war succeeds in destroying, i certainly hope not.

He wrote 2 short story collections before writing the saga: "The Last Wish" and "The Sword of Destiny". They set up the events of the sage, which stars with The Blood of Elves. It's really hard for me to pick a favorite, but if I had to pick, it would be "The Last Wish." Amazing book, but the short story the book is named for, where Geralt's fate is tied to Yennefer's is my favorite in the collection.

Ultimately, the reason people had a problem with Ciri being a Witcher, was for obvious culture war reasons. Though, those reasons aren't necessarily unfounded. Whether or not it's an issue comes down to the story reasons for this creative decision. If CDPR came up with a cool story reason for all this, then it should be a great game. However, if the reason they did it was just "because girlboss," then I think people have a good reason to be concerned.
