For those who say “Disney should be left in childhood” and “Disney Adults should grow up” should remember not everyone was fortunate enough to grow up with Disney. Many didn’t have the opportunity to watch much Disney or have any merchandise as children, but now that they’re older, they can afford and enjoy it. So let Disney Adults enjoy Disney! Also, Disney isn’t laser-focused on children. There are plenty of shows Disney owns that aren’t for young audiences. Even in Disneyland, there are food and wine celebrations for the adults.

Disney adults arent the only adults who have infantile tastes, but they definetely do have it. It would be like trying to normalize a grown up going to mcdonalds and getting a happy meal. And atop that, making their whole personality about how they enjoy the clown and other children's characters in there. Some people just never fully grow up, and that is fine in the sense that nobody is getting hurt. But there is no denying there was a lack of growth at some point.

Disney adults are no different than any other adults that like a things that are generally seen as "for kids." Video games, theme parks, super hero movies, comics, tabletop games, anime, and more are just things that a small, out of touch sect of people see as being "just for kids." Are there annoying Disney fans? Totally, the same way there are annoying fans of all the things I previously listed. I don't think it's especially healthy to wrap your entire identity around a consumer product, but again there are extreme cases for any of the areas I mentioned. Full disclosure, I have very little interest in anything Disney, but I'm certainly a fan of tabletop games, video games, etc. No one has ever called me a "gamer adult" or "DnD adult." That's weird.

Disney adults arent just adults who still enjoy going to disney or watching the movies, though, are they? They are the adults whose main personality trait is how they are still SOO MUCH into disney (which is nothing less than a mega corporation fucking over little people, let's not forget). It's like the 30 year olds that are still reading Harry Potter for the 15th time instead of any other of the millions of amazing books out there, or the 40 year olds whose main characteristic is how they are sooo into one piece or some other base-level children's manga. If you are fully an adult, and has been for years, and the main type of media you consume is still primarily made for children, you have infantile tastes. That is all there is to it. That doesnt mean you are a bad person, and I dont think anybody is claiming that, but the same way it is understandable to make fun of a grown ass man going to mcdonalds and ordering a happy meal, it's not unfair to mock someone who would fit in more with children than other adults in terms of what they are watching/buying/doing on the weekends.

@@gxdbig00 I have tons of friends in their 20s and 30s that enjoy Disneyland and disney films and shows. I'm a big Star Wars fan, and even though I haven't been to that new area in the Disneyland park yet, I bet I'm going to enjoy it a lot. Also looking at Disney+ there is plenty of content that is aimed more towards older audiences. Just because something CAN be enjoyed by kids doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed by adults, or isn't also aimed at adults. Marvel films would fail if they were only intended for children.

Yeah let's not make bs comparisons lmao... The difference is that all the things you listed aren't literally people's personality. Like disney adults who walk around with mickey mouse hats, do you see gamers walking around with gaming shirts? Or tabletop players making that their whole personality trait and carrying dice everywhere? Use your brain. these things are not the same, if you can't tell the difference, you are dull up there. Disney adults are the same as any obesessive person that has a "thing" as a personality. Like people who only have 1 thing to talk about in their life. Wanna know what a disney adult is good at? Knowing about disney lmao. Games and tabletop are active fulfilling things also that can improve your life and teach you things, not just something made for kids xD

I always find it so irritating hating on something someone loves. As a little kid i did that and now im left hobby-less struggling to find something i actually love. Dont hate on other's things just because they're weird to you. Its really sad to see people so empty emotionally that they feel morally right hating on someone giving them insecurities, self hate, and leaving them questioning what they even enjoy. Someone will prey on them and theyll end up in a to of hurt. We should be making people happy and building them up. Not tearing them down for enjoying their life. Spread positivity. Not hate. ❤

I think loving Disney as an adult is harmless. Lots of people nowadays are obsessed with video games and anime/manga and wear it all over or decorate their home with it. And a lot of people just have singular interests or are super hyped about what they love because they got a lot of value out of their life from it. Anything can be an obsession. There's a fine line between loving something and being obsessed with something. I'm specifically talking about Neurotypical people because Neurodivergence is a whole different ball game when you discuss comfort items and "obsession" and routine and it's not fair to compare it to a neurotypical society they are often forced to confine themselves or masks themselves to be in. So, i think honestly that neurotypical with any sort of obsession all the same. There's a difference between having a few favorite shirts and maybe some decorations and such related to your fandom (we're talking anime, sports, disney, super heroes, etc) and there is becoming the fandom, where you're losing your house and cosplaying as ypur favorite character or player or whatever every day. Obsession is obsession regardless of which fandom...though some fandom obsessions are more normalized thsb others.
@ZombiBunni_
@ZombiBunni_ 3 ай бұрын
Even with ND conditions, obsessions can become unhealthy (i.e. becoming increasingly detached from reality w/o balance or straying into addiction territory - like with ADHD, there is a risk of video game or collection addiction with obsessions. Just as an example) And likewise, even without Autism or ADHD specifically (as those are specifically known to be the ‘hobby obsessed’ conditions with special interests & hyperfixations), one can be healthily “obsessed” whilst being neurotypical I think I’m struggling to word this lol, but basically I feel like there’s just a really bad semantic issue underlying it all. People perceive unashamed joy of a hobby as “childish & obsessive” when it isn’t the acceptable thing to engage with. It’s viewed through an acceptability lense I think, so people with “acceptable interests” get missed for potentially harmful obsessions while people with “childish interests” get over-flagged for it.
@HouseMDaddict

@@ZombiBunni_ I get that people with ND conditions have obsessions and such too, but I was saying that it's unfair to compare them who have a legit medical disposition toward obsessions and such, to NT people who are actively choosing to have obsessions.

@@HouseMDaddict I got that and agree! I myself am Autistic, so I experience firsthand that specific type of “obsession” - the lifelong special interest kind. @HouseMDaddict
@HouseMDaddict 3 ай бұрын
@@ZombiBunni_ oh no you're fine! I just didn't want you think my comment was excluding ND. I was trying to be socially aware when writing it since I am a highs school counselor and a lot of the kids I regularly work with are autistic, have ADHD, anxiety, OCD, or some combination of those things and they genuinely struggle with obsessive tendencies or thoughts and they medically can't help it. So I get super defensive when people try to lump NT who have the CHOICE of obsession, in with ND who DON'T have a choice. A lot of my kids find solace in Anime especially, including wanting to be called nicknames of the characters, and it's a genuine comfort for them, and often not even an obsession just something that makes them happy and helps motivate them to do their schoolwork and try their best. I hope you're having a great day!
@HouseMDaddict
@HouseMDaddict 3 ай бұрын
@@ZombiBunni_ I also definitely agree with what you say about how "what" the target of the 'obsession' is greatly dictates what category it's put in. Like what I wrote in my initial post about people losing their ever loving minds because of a sports game (looking at you UK football, and you American football/NFL). That "passion" (obsession) is "acceptable" meanwhile a kid that loves anime and got a few collectors items is seen as "obsessive". People who love sports buy a crap ton of merch for their team including like purses and PJs and blankets and stuff without it being "obsessive" but if a kid wears a few pieces of merch from their favorite anime it's "obsessive/childish". We should measure "obsession" equally but we don't and it's sad.

@@TisiphoneSeraphYou've hit the nail on the head. You can be critical of something and still love it. Just because you love it doesn't mean you endorse everything they've done. One single person shouldn't get the same blame as big corpa just for embracing something they love. And in a sense you're almost devaluing the work of others (eg. The overworked underpaid animators) which can have two effects. One, the studios decide the animators are worthless and they drop them, so they're worse off now. Two, the animators worked very hard on something they loved creating and everyone refuses to acknowledge or celebrate it. Just not giving them money or not doing cosplays etc alone is not enough to enforce change. You'd need something more extreme like a mass protest or government legislation

I'm on the spectrum and late diagnosed, as well as disabled for half of my life. So, I have always been on the outside looking in. Weird. Different. Othered. I have experienced a great deal of trauma. It is what it is. I can understand the allure, especially as someone who is looking in from the outside and will never have a Disney experience. Specifically speaking on this small group of "Disney adults", the majority of them seem a little....different, and that's okay! There seems to be a certain child-like quality about them that our society has a problem with. We worship youth and youthfulness, and our society is highly sexualized. Childhood is treated differently. People try desperately to hold onto youth, but even as kids, most children are wanting to be... young adults. We label things as "immature" or "childish". What happened to labels like "wholesome" and "child-like wonder"? Innocent. Apologies. Very sleepy. My health is poorly rn.

Was made fun of by family when they found out how important Disney was to me at the age of 13 in the early 2000's. They questioned me like I was throwing my life away and they could not rap their heads around it... The same family now has a pass and go constantly. They're also major football fans, they go to so many games and they're extremely fashionable with major brands for them in everything. It's unfortunately a fad right now with Disney. I was the black sheep of the family for so many things that i found interest in and now the things that made me strange and out of place in my own family are now "popular" amongst everyone else in the world. With popularity comes with even more criticism and eyes. You either choose to go with herd or do the things that make you happy.

So either we make fun of everyone on Earth (eg: finance bros, film bros, red pillers, basic b*tches, pretentious music nerds, etc, are all cringe too and there are thousands more labels like this) OR we just accept people and don’t make fun of everyone.

@@030992amagadi I agree with you that Disney adults and Potter heads (or whatever they’re called) are cringe, but I disagree when you say the pop songs/ artists I mentioned aren’t cringe. Are you telling me that it wouldn’t be cringe if you saw a 40+ year old individual listening to “Shape of You” or “Believer” by Imagine Dragons as if those are the pinnacles of music? Not everyone has “sophisticated” taste, and I can personally find flaws that I interpret as cringe/ childish in so many adults. But it gets exhausting to do so, so I have this thought: “If we let those people exist and be extremely cringe without making fun of them, then that makes it better for all of us, it gives us the freedom to explore any interest without external labels forced upon us telling us that something is cringe.” I would never act like those adults, but I can’t be a hypocrite and act like I’m exempt from being cringe. Every human is cringe at least 10% of the time in my eyes. I see Potter heads the exact same way that I see adults that try to be so serious and on their high horse constantly, acting pretentious. Its just such a weird thing to judge people for. There isn’t really a line for what Adults can enjoy and still be functional adults. I didn't really like this group of people. I personally have no problem with Disney adults, I love Disney movies as much as anyone else, but I feel like they got quite defensive about assumptions that weren't necessarily negative. Saying that Disney adults could be that way because of childhood trauma or mental illness is an assumption, not a judgement or an insult but they all took it as a negative statement. The one woman who kept saying "like, what?!" to every assumption as if they were completely stupid ideas bothered me too. I think it's reasonable to assume some of this stuff. Not necessarily correct, and it was interesting to hear them explain their perspectives, but it just rubbed me the wrong way how she was acting like the assumptions were completely ridiculous. Also having disposable income doesn't mean you are currently or ever were rich. It means you have extra money to spend on non-essentials. So yes, Disney adults have disposable income - as do adults who are interested in and spend money on sport or beauty or music. That's absolutely not a bad thing and I'm not sure why they were trying to argue against something that is factually true. That said, this is just about this particular conversation with these particular people. Overall, anything that is legal and makes you happy should be none of anybody else's business. If you love Disney, that's totally fine at any age!

I imagine the reason for calling it Disney Adults and not baseball adults, is because sports is associated with adults, and kids playing sports is just doing the kid version of the adult thing, whereas Disney is associated with children, so it's adults doing an adult version of the kid thing. Sports are things you quite literally mature into, as your body and mind develop you become more suited to it. I'm not saying that by becoming more mature and developed you're less suited for Disney, but I think that's probably how people who make this distinction feel.

“Disney Adult” is such a pointless term because any adult can be a fan of any brand or franchise that appeals to a wide age demographic. Think of every KZbin channel that’s dedicated to Nintendo, Nickelodeon, Sonic, and DC Superheroes; those are all adults who are simply passionate fans to varying degrees just like “Disney Adults.” Disney may just be an easy target to deem “weird” to be an adult fan of due to how the company prides itself on its family-friendly values, and the fact that you can see many of these fans irl at the Parks, while fans of every other franchise are a bit more anonymous.

As long as you can remain objective and point out wrongs, policies that hurt the experience, or anything else that you don’t agree with, I have no problem with passionate fandom and support. Just keep your head on straight and remember that Disney is a business, first and foremost. e.g. When they took away the bus service for resort guests, and didn’t decrease resort prices, they gave us all a big middle finger. Let’s remember that and not just give them a free pass when they do shitty things. Just to be clear, I take my kids to Disney World ~annually and we always stay on property. It’s our vacation spot of choice. My 8-year-old is going on her 7th trip and my 4-year-old his 4th. It’s what we do 😊.

People just like to have fun. They can forget their stresses at Disneyland and just feel like a kid again. It’s self-care for the inner child which is actually extremely healthy for one’s wellbeing. Other people do drugs, drink, eat, go to bars, clubs, sports games…and those are supported strangely enough. You can emit sports games as that’s fine, but no different than loving Disney.

Where is the line drawn with being a disney adult? Like is enjoying the films and watching one every now and then a disney adult? How far do you have to go to receive the label is basically what im asking

I'm by no means a Disney adult but I would probably classify a Disney adult as someone that watches those types of movie regularly. But it's an umbrella term, I think. Some might classify a Disney adult as someone who really loves Mickey Mouse while others might say they're a Mickey Mouse fanatic.

I think "Disney Adults" are known for going to Disneyland multiple times a year. Honestly it's a flex if you can afford it.

A Disney Adult is someone who sees their identity as tied to Disney.

I watch the movies on a regular basis but I don't live anywhere that has a Disney Park to go. That said though I hate Theme Parks and crowds so even if I did I probably wouldn't go. No idea if I'd be counted or not 🤔

I think making it your whole personality and whole life and having it as an addiction is the line. The people here all seem fine- they all have lives outside of Disney and are aware of that.

I think "disney adults" should be called "disney fans" or "disney cosplayers" even if some of them don't cosplay. It's basically the same thing as going to an anime convention just year round because Disneyland is always open lol You cosplay as your favourite disney character the same way as any other cosplayer might for whatever reason they have. There's no difference except the medium that's being cosplayed. It's just dumb to shit on one group of cosplayers and be okay with another but this kind of thing is everywhere regardless of medium. And before someone "um aksually"s me, cosplay is the short form of COSTUME PLAY. It isn't specific to anime or anime-related cosplay. It applies to ANY FORM in which you are donning a costume and getting in character where it isn't for a formal production like cinema or stageplay.

Unfortunately, I don’t see how those Loungefly bags will hold up over time since faux leather always falls apart after a while whether you use it or not. I don’t think they’re a solid investment.

I can tell you that they don't. I bought a waterproof Harry Potter themed one to use for work and the zipper broke after not even a few months of use. I would never buy one again. Can still use the bag, just can't close it which defeats the point 😅
