I think this is great video. Very open & honest. I had my own company for 10 years then stopped and worked for someone else. That lasted 2 years. The fact that i had to ask permission to go to the dentist just killed me. I quit and started a new company. Right now i have two businesses. The more sources of income you have the better. My wife has 3 businesses. We're not rolling in money but we answer to no one and are debt free. There is no reward without risk and it takes years to build a company to where it healthy & running. Start with a side hustle.

You're absolutely right - it takes years to build a solid, healthy, running business - and I have found having a flexible mindset, the ability to pivot (plus a lot of other components is critical to success). I could never go back to asking someone for time off!!!

I love to work a lot. Owning my own business makes that a necessity, not a problem. First people laughed at me. Years later, they asked me for advice.

Owning a business is great until a client (that has signed a contract) decides not to pay and you have to go to the courts.

Or they pay late. My Dad (who is still working aged 80) is self employed, and has some large companies as clients. They often pay 3 months late and there is nothing he can do about it. We need stricter laws on payment in UK. In other countries, invoices have to be paid within X days by law.

I am living a comfortable life working for someone else. I tried to freelance and I’m not cut out to do the paperwork and marketing myself. My main work is a database programmer and my side hustle is sports photography. At 2pm I’m done. I am fortunate enough to work from home 100 percent and my coding skills are exactly what my company needs. Thanks again for sharing your experience on this.

Weekends and evenings are no longer a thing -> this really hurts. Working long hours without adequate rest, blurring the lines between personal and professional life, and ultimately leading to burnout. I can also add two more negatives: 1. Unexpected visits from friends: Friends and acquaintances might assume that since you're not adhering to a standard 9-5 work schedule, you're available at all times. 2. Clients expect you can deliver the same scope of work as larger companies but at a waay lower cost and with waay quicker turnaround times.

Hi Nischa. Not doing the comments often but after finding your channel I had to. This is one of the most useful ones out there on this subjects. I watched a lot of them for a long time and only now I know that something was missing. You make it so effortless and simple to digest, short videos packed with so much good content and information. Being gorgeous and always having a smile on your face sure helps but it's not even close to being smart, present, warm, logical and organised, unostentatious and always going for the classical black shirt dress code. Your recipe for delivering your "product" is just perfect. Never change the format, keep the smile on no matter what, follow your plans and dreams and teach others how to do it too ! My friend has a co-worker who told her that she doesn’t like to tell new hires she trains the “quick steps” to get a job done or frankly everything it takes to do their job. She claims it was for her job security. When I heard this I was disgusted. Mostly I was disgusted because these companies pit employees against each giving us the false thinking that hard work is rewarded. And the fact this woman thought she could secure her job by essentially sabotaging others is sad. Because if that company wanted to fire her, they would, no amount of job knowledge she had over others would have saved her.

Very classy presentation as always. I would add one item to it, and that is the idea of building equity. When working for someone else you are building equity - for someone else. When working for yourself you are (or should be) building equity for yourself. I too did very well in the corporate world but left for entrepreneurship myself. And clearly in the early going it is about income, but over time it will morph into being about equity. That will be the ultimate home run and vindication of your decision. All the Best!

@@inthemoodforambience yes that could be a likely outcome. Typically, the equity build will exponentially exceed any amount you pay yourself, as equity is valued at a multiple of earnings. It will also open doors for cash out refinancing, and other forms of leverage that could also exponentially exceed anything you pay yourself. Once you get to a level of ownership and building equity, it is life-changing. Been there - done that.

Very honest - I run a business with 25 employees - I love it (mostly!) - but it is also all consuming. The work-life balance is definitely tipped towards the work - but it makes me fill my life up as much as possible. I keep myself very busy and don't sit around much at all - and perhaps sometimes I should sit and chill - but if I try that I feel like I'm wasting time. I'm sure there are lots of people who feel this way... Love your videos - don't know how you find the time for them - but keep it up! 🙏😊

Thank you for your point on this. I am a first business owner. I was working in one field for 14 years and then quit. I started my online business back in March.23 I love the freedom that you mentioned, but I have set boundaries, not to work on weekends. I love what you said about missing some things and not others from corporate work - I get it. I also love working with my jumpers and cozy wear. Lol, I have learned that the first year of starting out on your own is not as easy as they make it out to be. It is also very expensive especially when you are a tight financial budget. Heck of a leap of faith, believe in self and bravery. Not everyone will be an entrepreneur or business owner. Some people thrive and only wish to be an employee. Either way, everyone should know what they are willing to do and be comfortable with. Also strive to be the best in that position. Fantastic video, thank you! I am a business owner - have been for over 10 years and was previously an employee. I love being my own boss and the freedom it brings. However, I almost reached the point of burnout before realising the need to pace it - which is what I am doing now. I thought by working all hours meant I was more successful, more hardworking, more focused on achieving my goals but the reality is you need to have a balance, and manage your own expectations as well as clients' expectations. I absolutely love being an entrepreneur and could never work for anyone again. Your videos are immensely helpful, authentic and valuable.

So true. Spot on another great video and topic. Thank you! Been an entrepreneur for over 25 years and I would add that you need to ensure your company can run when you are not there. That is what gives you the freedom and safety net you will need if you get sick or burnout, to not ruin your finances or worse. I speak from experience as I got PTSD and now have to rebuild my company with this "restriction" on my abilities. Might actually make some videos about that now that I think about it ... :)

So true and no one tells you the amount of time that you'll really spend trying to figure things out even with all the courses that you take to help you in your journey. Most just talk about all the time that you'll have for yourself when you set your own working hours but nobody tells you that you'll have to invest a lot more time upfront to figure things out and set things in place, forget setting things in order 🤯 and most days seem like a race against time to learn everything you need to learn, to serve your client, to build your business, to take care of yourself, to take care of your other responsibilities...

Thanks for this Nischa. I have been self employed for 25 years and have three small businesses that I love. There's two other things you could add. 1. If you set up your businesses well, they can be sold. In fact, if possible you should reverse engineer your businesses for this very purpose. The long game is to sell it. Let's say you build up a business over 15 years and sell it for $600K, that's like earning an additional $40k per annum over the whole period of your ownership 2. You mention not having to work with random people you don't necessarily like or have anything in common with, well, as an entrepreneur if you have a client giving you grief you can just walk away. There is a lot of focus on your services as a business person with reviews and testimonies etc, but you too are assessing your clients. Get rid of the overly critical, time wasting clients asap. They are never going to be satisfied with you or anyone and chances are they are poor payers too. Finally, there is one more thing I would add: it's not what you know that trips you up in business - it's what you don't know. Make as much effort to find out about everything eg. compliance, your obligations as an employer or director. You don't want a left field event to derail the efforts you are making to build a solid business.

I think it's great that she's doing well and all but I think this KZbin boom market is confusing a lot of people on what it really means to have your own business. If you're just talking to a camera, not hiring anyone, not cutting checks, not having to optimize and systematize, not having to automate SOPs, and the main product is you, then it's not really a business. More so a great hustle / job. I don't think something can truly be considered a business until it can generate you income without the owner having to be involved. A KZbinr is still a really cool job, but not a business imo. If the KZbinr stops generating content then the income eventually starts to dry up, while a real business can generate eventually without the owner being involved and can be sold to someone else. Easier said than done but a good business can continue to grow and prosper without the founder. A KZbin channel (at least one where the content is from the owner) can't.

I fully agree on all you are saying in this video. After quitting consulting, I switched and now I am Personal Trainer. I do believe and feel that I made the right choice. However, if I could speak to myself 10 years ago, I would say "it's going to be very painful". Generally speaking, change means literally big changes in every aspect of your life (friends, spouse, money, confort etc...). In the nutshell, with freedom comes with (heavy) responsibility. It's part of the deal, everything has a price.

When I told my daughter she calmly said- 'we don't need anything more, money wise, dad, and you are always saying how you don't have enough time. "You need to 'live' through it" - Excellent statement. If you've never owned and run a business you probably won't understand any advice you're given about running your own business - you have no 'reference points' for understanding what you're told. Like... 'hard work' as self employed has no upper limit if things need to be done, but if you've never been in that situation you have no capcity to appreciate what it really means. That's why 95+% of startups fail - people realise too late or give up bcause employment is so much easier. Excellent advice Nischa :)

Thank you Nischa.. true all of you've said. I'd add that its also more attractive to work for yourself when you are older.. you can work at your own pace, with whom and in what you like without trekking on cramped trains etc. you fell free even if you don't have much pension income for instance.

Love this. Being an entrepreneur is one of the best decisions I ever made. It can be scary but I’m a lousy employee and I could never give up the control. Plus I was able to move from the USA to Portugal because I went the self employment route. It’s a myth that having a conventional job is lower risk. It’s one of the riskiest things you can do to have all or most of your income come from one source. (I used to be in investment banking too!)

Yep and employees have very little protection from abusive employers. Ok the law is technically there but if they lay you off unfairly, you basically have to take legal action against an entity with much bigger legal pockets than you.
