I went back and found the first of this series so I would understand what you are doing. I noticed that one of the fuels seemed to be getting darker but then I noticed a dark knot in the wood behind it. Perhaps slide a sheet of white cardboard or the like behind the jars so the dark spots of the wood don't show thru and each jar has the same color background. This is a great experiment. Thanks.

got a 250 CC briggs and scrappin, non-ethanol pump gas (i can get it easily in this town), starts first pull every time. have had the engine roughly 7 months, some months i run it 10 minutes, others as much as 1 hour 20 minutes. the home made contraption charges 12 volt batteries, jump starts car and riding mowers, and can be used as an emergency generator if a storm takes the power out. (also equipped with a power inverter, a car alternator keeps the 12 volt battery on it charged up when in use.) i go through a tank probably every 9 weeks. sometimes i run it just to make sure it is run no less than 10-15 minutes per month.

Taryl. Watching every month. Taryl. Can you make a video about the different kinds of belts and the ones to use and not use on lawn mowers. It seems like it would be so simple but turns out to be difficult getting a belt that hold up to what a mower deck puts them through. A while back I bought belts at the lawn mower shop in the area thinking these guys work on mowers all the time for a living so they should sell a good belt. The belts they sold me didn't last no time. I presently get power equipment belts from NAPA and they seem to be the best of them all. I bought a set of belts from Stens last summer I haven't tried out yet. What say you. Be well, you and your family.

10:30 - When gas is allowed to vent (on the right) the lighter gas distillates (more volatile) will evaporate, leaving the heavy darker distillates (less volatile) behind. I wonder if the fuel shutoffs were left open or closed while the engines were "aging" if the shutoff is open there is a tendency for gasoline (gasohol?) to evaporate from the carburetor/bowl allowing more to enter as per the float level trying to maintain level causing less volatile parts of the fuel to accumulate/concentrate and also perhaps accentuating varnishing and corrosion also some evaporation could occur from the fuel tanks if poorly sealing gascaps and moisture increasingly contaminate the gasohol as compared to having the fuel in a good quality sealed gas can

Good test, but in a way you are proving that if you start your mower at least once a month, allowing fresher gas to fill the float bowl, it will most likely start. You should have had one engine with no additives at all, for the start test along with all the others, and one engine without additives for starting only when the whole time period is up.
@jtdundee4 жыл бұрын
Um.... he isn't refilling the gas tank. The tanks were filled January 1st. They are vented - so the gas in each engine's tank looks just like the glass jar on the right with the vented lid. There is no fresh gas going into the float bowl,all the gas in this video is 90 days old. There is an exchange of gas in the bowl, so yes, it is not just sitting there. If he runs it more than a minute that gas gets used up and more gas from Jan1 enters the bowl
@johnb55194 жыл бұрын
@@jtdundee I know that, but every time you run the engine gas from the tank clears out the smaller amount in the bowl, and keeps things unclogged. I said fresher not fresh.

If an engine is started once a month, you have a pretty good chance that it's going to run. You should have a test with engines sitting for 6 months ( an off season ) with your fuel additives. Then see what it takes to get them going. Then to get them not to surge. That's what people do. It's rare for people to go out and start something they aren't going to use. The only thing I've seen people do that on are generators. This is going well, but to have a similar result you would have to start your equipment once a month.

You are starting them every month so any sludge wil be sucked through and burnt. Most people turn off their mowers or equipment for winter and then start them 4 to 5 months latter. This causes water to build up and sludge to form which may not allow the engine to start.

My favorite fuel additive is extremely cheap and works 100% of the time. Remove a fuel line close to the carb or tank, and drain the fuel tank. Try to crank the engine. If it starts, let it run till it dies. The MYTH that some gas must stay in the carb to keep the gaskets from drying out is a MYTH. Park engine. Cost: $0 Efficiency: 100%

Years ago all small engine carbs had spring loaded drains on the bowls. Simply running the tank dry isn't enough, if you're doing that you need to remove the fuel that remains in the bowl. If not it gets drawn into the carb next time you start it.

A lot of interesting comments - almost makes me think it is sometimes due to the design of the carb. Some of my small engines worked great with just plain 2 year old gas. Some lawnmowers, including 4 stroke motorcyles with carbs - didn't want to easily start and run well when the gas gets over about 4 months old. All fuel hereabouts is ethanol. We are about 2 hours NW of Taryl.

@jeep20034 жыл бұрын
If you start them every month theyre never going to go bad. Iv got two cars with gas over 6 years old that i start regularly and they are fine with ethenol and no additives. Its when they sit with no fuel circulation that the gas turns bad.
@bluesky21454 жыл бұрын

I could use one or two of those motors when you're done with them!
@boblamparter36764 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing as Joe the Mower Man. I'm surprised that they all start this well after a few months. Maybe by moving some gas through the carbs each month you're preventing the worst of the gel from forming in the jets. I am expecting the 87 octane to go first, but it's possible some of the additives could cause problems despite what they're intended to do. That's the usefulness of a real world test. If these all continue to start and run you may need to do what the usual user does - put them away near the end of October and not start them till April.

I don't remember where I saw the advice to pull an engine around to the compression stroke after shutting it off, but I'm sure it saved that engine.
