@Techno_Nomadic18 күн бұрын
Two tips: It's better to be a little loose than too tight. The only thing that keeps the valves cool is contact with the head. The longer they're in contact the cooler they stay, especially for exhaust valves. Get that too tight and the exhaust valve can overheat, the shaft can get big enough to gall the valve guide or the face can hot spot and melt or chip off. Had it happen. Better to be a hair loose on exhausts than a hair tight. Second: if you're new to adjusting valves, the hardest thing to figure out is how that thickness gauge feels sliding between the valve and rocker when it's right. If you can easily slip the next size down gauge in the gap with no drag and the next size up is difficult to get in there or it has lots of drag you're close enough. If you have a clothespin, put it on the gauge and pull it out of the pin, that's roughly about it.

True especially on high load for long period engines .

If the spec is say .004 to .006, I like to set slightly tight on .006, that way the 4 or 5 will fit properly. Saves a lot of time in many cases. Just my opinion
@MrTheHillfolk13 күн бұрын
Exactamundo. And I always set em to the max clearance Say it's .004-.006 , set em at 6. Like 2 thou is gonna do anything for power if that's what you're after. And the difference between a loose and tight feeler blade is minor ,don't sweat it.

He's taught a lot of people how to fix things themselves to his own detriment and the detriment of all lawnmower shops. It's why the industry has voodoo dolls of him stuck full of pins.

I also am a huge Kawasaki fan. Interesting note - in the manual for the FS731R engine the valve clearance instructions say to adjust the clearness to .002 and tighten the locknut to achieve .004-.006 final clearance. It works!!! This is the first time I’ve ever seen this and I’ve thought about it as it applies to the issue we often have with tightening jam nuts and the clearances changing from the feeler gauge thickness. I think it may have to do with thread pitch and the difference in actual gaps or looseness between the threads of the studs and nuts.
@brnmcc0117 күн бұрын
I like this method better too, because you don't have to worry if you're on that compression release or not. That's why some engine manuals tell you to put it on TDC on the compression stroke and then go past a little bit so you're not adjusting the valve on top of the compression release. Also, you should mention especially on air cooled engines, if you don't have enough exhaust valve clearance, you run a high risk of burning up that valve, the valves and seats are made really cheap and thin on a lot of these motors. A little valvetrain noise is preferable to buying a new head!

I’m also a small engine mechanic and the only time setting opposing valves doesn’t work, are on very high performance engines I overhaul. For example, my 15.1:1 high compression piston overhaul I did on my KTM 350 XC-F engine. It runs over 14,000rpm which can cause some uneven cam wear over time. This can cause setting valve lash with one open and one closed on the lobe to not be exactly the same as at TDC due to uneven wear because of extreme rpm and very high pressure valve springs. Always set high performance engine valve lash at TDC like you should to have maximum compression & valve clearance where it matters most. 👍 For all normal grass rat engines, yes, opposing valve lash clearance works great.

Most motorcycles have a 1.0 mm thread pitch on the valve adjusting screw. 1/6th turn is 0.0065” and valve spec is usually 0.005”-0.010”. So, screw it in to zero clearance, turn the lock nut for reference, then back the screw out from one point to the next in the hex nut. Tighten. Rinse and repeat.

1:23 I always thought it was allowance for thermal expansion and lubrication clearance; typically .004 for intakes and .007 for exhaust since they get hotter. What frosts my nuggets is the specification to set valve lash at TDC! What's the matter with adjusting one when the other valve is full open? 12:03 Should have known you would give the people the straight facts! Never had to work on a Kawasucki and never knew they used eccentrics!
@lynnmor21013 күн бұрын
Doing it your way has the lifter close to the lobe ramp. I turn the engine till a valve is fully open then mark a part that rotates such as the flywheel or a pulley. Then I rotate one full turn till the mark returns to the same spot. Now you can adjust the valve knowing that the lifter is opposite the lobe and not close to it.

For what it’s worth on a Cummins 6 (and I think many inline 6 engines) you get the crank pulley to TDC. #1 and #6 are now both top dead center, one in exhaust/intake overlap (rockers tight) and one between compression/power stroke. If rockers on #1 have clearance, check intake on 1, 2, 4 and exhaust 1, 3, 5. If rockers on #6 have clearance, do intake 3, 5 and 6, and exhaust 2, 4, 6. Easy peasy.
@jefftheaussie222517 күн бұрын
Or as the pistons operate in pairs ie 1 and 6, 2and 5 3 and 4, when 1 has valves rocking adjust 6. When 2 is rocking adjust 5 and so on. There is a lot of turning this way but it is for those who don’t know your method.
