I worked for GM Holden for 12 years at Holden's Engine Operations at Port Melbourne, Fishermans Bend, I started in the Foundry 2004 , then moved to the new HFV6 engine plant in 2006 building the Alloytec V6 engines for Commodore and Statesman, and a 2.8 litre turbo engine built and then exported for SAAB vehicles, I lost my job when the plant closed down on 29th November 2016, so it will be 8 years since that day in a few weeks time , I have always been a car enthusiast and favoured Holden since I was young, and it was a dream job to work there, I was so proud to say I work for Holden. I have an archive of photos I took of the old plants before , during and after their demolition, I will always treasure my time at Holden with fond memories.

No doubt they were great times when you look back now. Who would have guessed back then this would have occurred. As a country a lot of great manufacturing jobs and skills have been lost which is a poor reflection on the Australian Government considering the obscene amount of money they send overseas in aid and waste.

Had one of my best days selling Holdens at Lang Lang, the VX Series II was being released so holdens decided to have a drive day at Lang Lang, which is an interesting exercise in logistics as I, and my co-salesmen, lived in the Riverland in SA, but that’s another story. Cam McConville was there as well as Todd Kelly, I think it was Todd, but we had fun on the skid pads “testing Statemans without traction control”, we did emergency lane changes and braking tests, then we’d do some laps on the Ride and handling course. One bloke managed to roll a wagon, unbelievable. Absolutely the best fun day out I had as a Holden salesman. 👍 Broke my heart when Holden closed.

People blame Holden or blame the government for the collapse, I was a contractor to Holden for many many years, and the secret was in the staff car park, mostly Japanese cars, barely a Holden to be seen. Speaks volumes, and to all of you in the comments saying ‘such a shame’ or ‘it’s so sad’ tell us how many NEW Fords or Holdens have you bought in the past? Did you do your part?

The Government removed the tariffs and replaced it with subsidy's then reduced them as well. In the long run it works out better to have tariffs on imported cars. It forces local manufacture, assembly or partial manufacture to get around the tariff. Tariffs also reduce the governments reliance on taxing the individual.

I used to work in a factory that made parts for Holden in Dandenong, we got to see and play with cars before they came out like the Monaro. We had a guy turn up in a WM Buick made for the Chinese market but a prototype, it had full electric rear reclining massaging seats, the dash was LHD and completely different, it was also a V8. While we were messing around with it the guy told us he was just about to take it to Lang Lang and was going to be crushed😪 I miss those days.

@@RossReviewsau Most prototypes get crushed. They cannot be sold to the public and car manufacturers cannot keep all of them. One prototype that hasn't got crushed is the Holden Ute that Chevy used to develop the new Corvette. Holden has got 35 cars in its heritage fleet and 12 of them are on display at the Birdwood museum in South Australia. Another one is the 1979 Repco rally commodore that Peter Brock drove and that is at the motorsport museum in Bathurst.

He told stories of driver doing long stints on the ring road to the point they got bored and would put a brick on the accelerator and climb into the back seat. A couple of times they fell asleep and the only way to deal with it was to wait for the car to run out of petrol and wind its way down or use another car to nudge from behind to wake the driver up.

It's such a shame that Holden is no more........I very (very) nearly bought a Monaro VXR here in the UK, but went with a 5th Gen Mustang instead. The proving grounds really do need to become a focal point for car enthusiasts in Australia. Even if its not GM focussed, a facility like that is just too cool to lose. We have a similar facility here in the UK called Millbrook. This, too, was built by GM (well, Bedford, their truck company in the UK). It's gone through a number of owners but is still in use by the automotive industry. Sadly, that's also almost impossible to get into due to many prototype cars using the facility.

I’ve pulled heaps of Holdens, Ford’s and Chryslers apart and they were a very average build. They were ok if they were maintained constantly and kept away from water. Rust was a big enemy of the three American/Australian cars. Compared to Toyota even in 1966, Australian made American cars were a second rate product, built down to a profit point.

Was never open to the public and isnt now...far from rotting away - yes its only used by small groups of people. Want to make it something else? Come up with rhe cash. Vinfast us trying to sell it like you said...

It’s hardly being used… and vin fast is trying to get rid of it! That is scary who knows what could happen to it! Aussie tax payers spent millions helping Holden stay alive this place should have been made a historic listing

The commodore, was still a good car(ZB not so much). The small cars that GM tried in Australia just crap compared to what else was on the market
@geoffreybanditt43553 күн бұрын
The ZB wasn't a true Commodore. It was pretty much just a rebadged Vauxhall Vectra.

Downfall didn’t start in the 80s. At the time after the last model of hz kingswood were stopped being produced Holden lost its market in the bigger family car market even though they still offered a v8 in the commodore average family still preferred falcon because it had more room and was comfortable that’s why when the vn came out it brought Holden back into the big family car market and the vn actually won the wheels car magazine award then 10 years later the vt came out and that ended up being the best selling car on the Australian market the real downfall happen when ve was produced pretty sure after 15 years on top Holden lost its place as best selling Australian car and Toyota took over the other reason why the industry shut down was its too expensive to make cars here labour rates where at a all time high what’s the point of making cars here were they can make all these new SUV’s and utes over in Asia for half the labour rates even though we had better quality of cars but the government always looking to cut cost at the end of the day.
