Hey guys! In this video we go over the truth about how the T.rex broke out of the SS Venture in The Lost World: Jurassic Park! These storyboards were recently auctioned off by Phil Tippet and they contain some awesome info on the Tyrannosaur's escape on the ship before it crashed into the dock in San Diego! If some way some how this turned up as a deleted scene I would be extremely happy! Hope you all enjoy! :D

Would have loved for this to have been in the film. The horror/suspense aspect could have still worked after it. The audience would know the Rex was loose, but when the ship crashed and they board it, the question for the audience would be "Where is it?/Did it jump off?" Then the audience would come to the same horrific realisation Malcolm does about the cargo hold.

This just makes me completely rethink about the whole SS Venture issue. They should’ve filmed it or if they did keep it. Once the helicopter flys away in the movie just skip to them having the Rex on the ship and play out like in the story board but end with the captain about to get attacked. After that it shows the helicopter in San Diego

just film up until the point at which the buck wakes up. I agree with why they didn't want to show exactly what happened but I gotta criticize Speilberg for not framing any evidence of T-rex breaking out and eating the crew better than what was shown on film.

I'm of two minds about this scene being cut. On the one hand, it helps the narrative flow overall in the film and helps patch over the broken T. Rex cage being not particularly obvious in the mis-en-scene of the boat deck scene. On the other hand, the mystery of what happens to that ship and the suspense as it enters the harbour is one of my FAVOURITE parts of TLW. As well, between the cut from the dinosaur island to the mainland, the ship being named the S.S. Venture, and the final part of the movie being the film's star rampaging in a city, this is a very OBVIOUS nod towards King Kong, as that film also featured a famous "cut to the mainland" that film makers like Stephen Spielberg and Peter Jackson hold in high regard. I wouldn't be surprised if SS had cut the scene not just for time, but to reference a classic movie even further. Speaking about the end transition, I personally never had much problem with it. To me the scene in the helicopter observing the caged buck says very obviously that "this isn't over yet", which naturally leads into the end. The finale, in addition to being about the T. Rex messing shit up, is also about Ludlow's incompetence catching up to him and causing it all in the first place ("Now you're John Hammond"), and his death at the hands of the T. Rex baby and him pathetically telling the buck to "wait!" are all massively deserved by the end. And on a smaller note, this sequence is also the first time in the film we see Malcom and Harding actually WORK together without bickering, outside of some playful banter.

If in the movie they showed a shot of the hole in the roof of the bridge, then that would have explained to me how the Trex killed the crew. Prior to knowing this I couldn't imagine how the rex navigated through through the corridors into the room.

I highly agree with you. This scene should have definitely been in the movie. I think it would have fit just fine, if they cut it off right where they did in the story boards so you know the trex got out but not that it killed all of the crew. Still leaving suspense when the boat crashes especially when the trex doesn't immediately run off of the ship into the crowd.

True, it explains the T-Rex's escape. But it STILL doesn't explain to me how it managed to shut itself in the cargo hold, locking the door from the outside, given that there was no one alive left onboard S.S. Venture when it crashed into port. That said though, Great video!

I loved the lost world movie and this has been a great eye opener on how the scene is meant to play out. However, I do have a question, how does the T-rex go back into the metal bunker and have the door closed on it? That has always confused me as if the trex got up, killed everyone on the boat, and then locks itself in from the inside to create suspense for the next scene. That still bothers me.

That scene would have answered so many questions it it was in the final cut. BUT I STILL HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS: 1. Were did the cage for the rex come from? 2. How much time actually passed between Nick calling the base. Nick called the base for a rescue. not a rex securing operation. unless they had The Flash go pick up the parts for the rex cage from the hunters camp. the combined group centianly wasnt carring any rex cage. and the only information nick gave was the location of communication centre. And the ENTIRE reason they went there was because they were after a 'working radio' because the trike killed the hunters 'satelite radio' truck by some how setting on fire and tossing like a beach ball onto Roland and Ajay's hide. and the rex family kicked the gatherer's off a cliff. And yet despite not calling "We bagged a rex, bring us a heavy ass steel cage." Unless Ludlow pulled a frickin radio out his ass. I can assume that because the Helicopters arived on Sorna so quickly because the SS Venture WAS Harvest base and was not far off shore to transport the dinos back to the main land. Cause one would assume that the vehicles and equipment brought on land by helicopter did not have enough lifting capacity to hall several tonnage of dinosaur and equipment and vehicles back to the mainland. if that was the case, then when the harvest leader didn't call into harvest base for at least 12-16 hours! Trailor goes of cliif at night. Epic music plays in the morning, Deiter stark eaten by compies in the afternoon. found the parts they didnt like in the evening. Moma/papa rex sniffed out babby blood at night. that amount of time would at least warrented some sort of inquiry from harvest base. The crew must have know they were anchored off of dino murder island because the ship had all that containg equipment LIKE BULDOZERS AND UH60 Helicopters AND they brought the fricken rex back YET, no one at harvest base thought "havent heard from the harvest team for over 12-16 hours on dino murder island, might need to see if shit hasn't gone south. But no, since the crew of the SS venture weren't local fishermen they didn't care for the five deaths and probally just sat on deck dricking beer. without a care in the world. Untill the poor sod sat at radio got a message. Which was; "they have suffered sevre casualties and in mortal danger." Not. "YO bro, the raptors total attac. Kill us much. LOL tranqed rex though #worthit. Send Flopper bobber with much cage for rex. Also Need halp. Such get to chopper needed." Nick said nothing about the rex, so where did the cage come, did one of the helicopters show up with a working and radio and Ludlow told the to go fetch a rex cage? The helicopter (singular) was only give coirdinates to the comm centre. So How did the lacate roland, ludlow and the rex. did the pilot see a sleeping rex and went: "oh cool a sleeping t-rex, lets land in that helicopter unfirenly area and go see. Oh hey, roland and Mr paycheque is here too. Neat." Or did one of the Hunters flag the helicopter down like a taxi? Even if the helicopter didn't land? how did they comunicate to tell the helicopter pilot to tell the harvest base to go fex a rex cage. Unless the helicopter made two trips. going to Malcom's group which was the coordiantes that made the call saying survivors are in mortal danger. And since Nick used the Code name INGEN harvest leader. theres no way that the harvest base could know that the group had been split up by mama rex sniffin out babby rex blood. And yet it appears multiple Helicopters we sent out including equipment for a rex cage. I totally over thought this... 3. The long grass was not far from the sleeping spot. so after the longrass ambush did the raptors not do anything else? were they full? Did they just peace out, after their part was played. or did they raptors know that this was a film and this wasn't the final act. 4. Ludlow: "I'd love to get out of here before the female knows we're here." Where did the female bugger off too? Both rexes were there when carter did a terible alarm clock impression. when they scattered the hunters moma rex went after the group to the water fall and had herself a burk biscuit. Did she take his crunched corpse back to the nest for baby? Even if she did the bull just let the hunters scatter. and was still sniffin around the same spot when the scene started, like it'd found an enourmass pot of dino-catnip. Was the bull rex like: "My girl got this. and those dumb humans went into raptor grass, even I be like fuck that shit! Oh, hey is that a pot of glue"? 5. Were did all the extra grunts come from? there we not that many survivors left and yet it looks like either the raptor victims got up and went to go cage a rex, Or Ingen is actually the Umbrella corporation, who use expendible clone minions. They made the T-virus along with T-rexes. Oswell E Spencer.... I mean John Hammond have simillar physical depedencies on oxygen tanks and close at hand medical equipment. 6. When the activity around the rex bull was no where near moma rex. they were not far from raptor ambush grass. and NONE of the raptors went to investigate these loud flying things and lights in the middle of the night? Because of the increased raptor count, the screen time devoted to raptors was shared amoung them. and because that one dumbass decided to sowly approach a human instead of slashing him across the belly, they gets distracted by someone calling "hey you", and gets spin kicked out a window. 7. Nick took the bullets out of rolands gun. Does that mean roland only took TWO bullets to isla sorna? I'm not a hunter and I cannot tell if that is standard practice for dino-hunting but not carring more bullets than the beach capacity of your weapon seems a poor life choice to go hunting on dino-murder island. Now I am aware that roland was using .600 Nitro Express rounds, which are very big and very heavy and i get that ajay probably had some in his bag. But roland HAS POCKETS(google .600 Nitro express and you will see what i mean), im sure a round in each pocket would be fine. Roland wears a belt. or does he? im not sure now. Now when malcom picks up Ajay's bag. and how the frack did Nick even see it. At night. While Running. I was not that heavy. So that leads me to believe Roland only ever took TWO of those big ass bullets with him to Sorna, thinking that was all he needed as the worlds second greatest hunter. Untill The Yautja land looking for German-Californian politicians. Did Roland Tembo Sudenly think he was Cristopher Lee in posession of a golden Gun? I went off a tangent Oh well. my question still stand but meh

The T. Rex breakout should have been shown in the film, but not without destroying the element of surprise when the Venture crashed into the dock. Perhaps as a flashback recounted from a lone survivor of the crew, to shore up the narrative flow. With all the deleted Lost World scenes, it could have been close to three hours long; great for an epic motion picture but for a commercial movie that would encourage Universal to promote it, it could would have made audiences even more divided.

I love this video and love getting these extra details, but I’m in the small group that was never bothered by the scene. I’m a person who thinks in certain kinds of films it’s okay for there to be movie magic so to speak and things don’t have to be explained. A lot of the complaints or questions people had about the scene (which I didn’t really know about til social media took off) never crossed by mind in 1997 or any later viewing. I think Spielberg especially is really gifted at making movie magic. I mean there is a T-Rex walking around San Diego it’s really cool. I’m gonna sit back and enjoy it and not be bothered by if the logistics completely make sense or not. But that’s just how I am with certain movies especially ones that have a sci fi or fantasy aspect to them. If it’s enjoyable and well done I don’t pick it apart. I’m definitely not judging anyone else’s preference because there are other genres / movies where I do have picky questions. But ever since I was a little kid I just go with the Spielberg magic on certain films.

Cutting the scene was a double-edge move since leaving the audience in suspense was a good move, as well as the mystery of what happened left the film open to criticism. If the film had came out around the times of dvds, this scene would've been perfect as a small short for the dvd as it keeps the suspense but also allows an answer to the mystery . It would've definitely encourage dvds sales as well.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuddeeeee. This movie gets deeper and more amazing the longer it sits on it's throne. So many scenes, so much exposition, all the holes are like little goldmines that should've been shown to us one way or another. I think the rush to get the movie out and just finish it is what causes these problems, and it sucks cause like you say this one story board explains sooo much and diminishes alot of skepticism I had specifically about the break out. And yet, theres so much more to be explained or addressed.

Not knowing how the whole crew died and never believing the raptor theories has made this a giant question mark in the movie for me. I'm so glad that you shared this. I love all things in this series but have always thought these scenes made no sense and that they were worse than Kelly doing her gymnastics and killing a raptor, mainly because there was no context given for how they died. Spielburg didn't only keep us 'in suspense'....he completely lost us! One second we're on the island with a tranced Rex - next second we're on a pier somewhere (not even sure where). No explanation why we're there, no explanation what happened to Malcolm's team (we still don't know of Van Owen's whereabouts), not even hints of anything. Its like the original King Kong - one second he's tranced on the island, next second he's chained in a cage, on a stage. But at least we can excuse that instance because of the movie's age. This scene would have gone a long way to explaining the situation and logistics. But there needed to to be a whole lot more to transition us from the island and lessen the hard landing of jumping straight to San Diego. For instance, how long does a ship take to sail from the Costa Rican islands, through the Panama Canal (assuming they didn't take the long route), and up the Mexican/California coast? How was the Rex fed and kept hydrated the whole time (3 days without water and we're toast)? There's a lot of exposition Spielburg should have been prepared to show once he decided to scrap the planned ending of the movie.

I like that it was kept kind of a surprise with the boat crashing into the dock. However, I do wish they would have shown the bull Rex breaking out on security Cam recording of the deck. That could have been what caused them to know to jump off the boat as they investigate the ship and opened the cargo hold.

I think this storyboard did end up being filmed but was cut or stopped mid/before production when spielburg wanted the 3rd act quicker or thought it wasn't important

Willing to bet the scene was never actually filmed. The dead guy clutching the control for the cargo hold still doesn't make a lot of sense. A shot with some poor bastard lifting a piece of paper off the T.rex's face to reveal an open eye would've been pretty sick.

As much as I wish they'd kept this in, I think part of the problem is that JP2 was very geared towards giving the audience a more sympathetic look at the dinos (hence Nick vs. the hunters, the Parasaurolophus capture, and Dieter's compy comeuppance). Spearing the Rexy's back with a forklift would've probably gotten a lot of complaints; however much it explained and justified the rest of the third act. tl;dr- The scene was probably cut due to gratuitous harm to a very popular and awesome dino.

It would of been great to have this in the film.. I believe the best way would of been for them to find the CC video recording of the events after the boat crashed so it didn't spoil the actual crash... Would of explained everything but yet kept the suspense... Love this page!! Thank you

Something tells me this scene never got past the storyboard phase, probably for time/budget constraints. I'll admit though, it does kind of remind of that deleted scene from another dinosaur-centered Spielberg film, "We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story." It probably has to do with a caged dinosaur in a dark, enclosed setting. But yeah, the scene itself is cool, although if I were to put it in the movie, I would've stopped it at the part where the Bull Rex started to break out of the cage. It could've been a nice balance of explaining the damage it caused on the ship while also letting the audience extrapolate what happened before the ship crashed at the dock.

Spielberg could have still showed this scene and kept the "surprise" when the boat crashed by simply delaying the scene. How? We have the boat crash exactly how it happens in the movie and the big "holy shit" moment with the Rex busting out of the cargo hold. Now... while Ian and Sarah go for the baby, they apply this scene as the dock crew and Ludlow checking the ships security cameras to see what happened. or maybe could have left one survivor to either describe what happened, or just show the scene as a "flashback" in the terrified survivor's point of view as he tells the brief story to Ludlow and security.

At first I thought the scene was cut because the wasn't room on deck for all that equipment, then I noticed trees in the storyboard background. This suggested the escape took place on the island. That brings up even more continuity questions..

I believe this was absolutely filmed, and just like you said I believe Spielberg looked at this leading into the ventures crash, and said you know what would be cool, letting the people see the venture crash and work It out themselves. That was a mistake obv now but I get the premise of it, but I do believe this scene was filmed

So in the jurassic park book its said that reptile dna was also used to fill in the dna gaps of dinos. But doesnt specifically mention which ones. If we watch the jurassic park movie one of the first dinosaurs we were meant to see (when doing the park ride) is the dilo. However for whatever reason the dilo simply isnt seen. Later on we see the dilo drop down (yes drop down) from a tree, or hes a very big leaper. Before nedry pisses it off. My theory is this. The dilophosaurus may have been up in a tree sleeping or something. Considering also the fact reptile dna was used this could explain why it would be in a tree in the first place but could also suggest it being able to camo. Furthermore the group are all looking near the ground when they first pass the paddock in the vehicles. Idk its always something that has bothered me since child hood lol

Even a partial inclusion of this sequence would have made the whole transition much clearer. One of my criticisms of TLW when I first saw it was that the deck of the ship looked almost unscathed despite the bodies strewn around. Thanks for the clarification. Great video. Edit:For some reason, the buck tyrannosaurus emerging from the cargo hold makes me think of Rex from Toy Story!
