Jophery is attacked by a Velociraptor after falling off of the cage gate in the first Jurassic Park movie. What happened to him and how did this scene play out? We never get to see the Raptor attack itself but these dinosaurs are VERY scary and vicious in the movie! Does Alan Grant give us a hint and what does this mean for other scenes like when they try to turn the power back on at the end? Isla Nublar is a rough place to work.

You remember how in Alien: Isolation there were bonus DLC missions where we could play as characters from the movie and reenact scenes from it? Imagine if in Jurassic Park: Survival they had missions like that for Jopherys death, playing as Jophery himself unloading the raptor and then seeing yourself getting attacked. They could also do Ray Arnold and showing how he died, Ellie while she was looking for the power switch, Nedry getting the embryos, Muldoon hunting rhe raptors with his shotgun, so many opportunities.

Both the book and the movie actually paint a very clear picture on how the raptors are different from every other dinosaur that's be genetically engineered. The raptors not only show extreme intelligence but they're also incredibly cruel. It's noted in both the movie and books that they kill for pleasure outside of just hunting for food. They were constantly checking defenses as well being aggressive towards anyone even themselves. Hence why they had to lower a cow into the pen and why the one raptor killed all but the other 2. In the books Henry even begs hammond to let him continue working on the raptor genes so he can create a more slower and not as deadly version of the raptor. I don't think it really mattered what the raptor did to the worker because it was going to torture regardless of how little or how much time he had with him.

Jaws and Jurassic Park have similar openings, What I like about them is that they both started off with the Universal logo and they're backed by a series of sounds that ushers you into the world of both films. Jaws had ocean and sub marine sounds, while Jurassic Park had it's jungle ambience. Another interesting, chilling connection between the two films are their opening scenes which they took place at night. Both with a single victim being dragged away by their feet and screaming from an unseen attacker.

And, funfact, the book starts with a scene where the wounded/dying worker is brought into a small doctors office on the mainland where he succumbs to his wounds. The doctor quickly realises them to be animal bite and scratch marks of incredible size and deph, wondering what kind of large land animal could cause these. The similarities to the autopsy scene of jaws was so striking that Spielberg decided not to do "the same opening in two movies in a row" and instead filmed the iconic attack scene we know.

Wait, it was _him?!_ Darn, that's an even darker scene than I thought, I've never read the books but hearing around that a spanish worked said "Lo soy Raptor" ( _I AM RAPTOR_ ) before vomiting blood and dying quite creeped me out on its own, but the fact that that same worker is actually Jophery makes it even more tragic. At least it does make more sense now, though. (Also Jophery's spanish in the book? Interesting)

The raptors climbing up the wall and ceiling of the cage would make a lot of sense like in the book they describe multiple points of raptors dropping down from the roof or ceiling and a lot of big cats also drag their prey up into higher places. So them implementing that fact into the books and movies makes sense
@kerianhalcyon2769

Given what we know about the various animals they're sourced from this also makes sense. There's been a theory going around recently that raptors may have actually used their big toe claw to aid them in climbing trees, and various species of lizards actively climb up surfaces to stay away from danger or assert territory.

Looking into this opening scene, it's really fascinating to think about the ways that raptor could've killed Jophrey, and when looking back on Grant's lecture on how the raptors killed their prey, I think Jophrey, after the raptor began its attack, was first pulled into the cage by the leg, felt pain from said attack, before he was pulled upwards and further into the cage, where the raptor began tearing and chomping into his waist and stomach. That would explain his growing cries of pain the further the attack goes on (I know I'd be screaming in agony if that happened to me). As for that final scream before he's pulled in all the way, my guess is the raptor reached his chest and punctured one of his lungs with its claws. That would be an incredibly agonizing and painful way to go. Regardless of how he actually died in this scene, it still makes this one intense intro to the movie, where you know that for all the wonder that Jurassic Park may have with its dinosaurs, it still has a dark side to it with the raptors, with their cunning intelligence and ferocious hunting abilities. Kudos to Steven Spielberg and his crew for their movie making skills.

The beginning of Jurassic Park is striking for a lot of reasons, but I particularly like how the Raptor cage is more like a crate or box of some kind. The figurative Pandora’s Box opens as Jophery raises the gate, and the horrors within are unleashed, setting the plot of the film, and the whole series into motion.

This is the first time I’ve heard someone trying to visualize this death. I mean I’m sure we’ve all kinda had a loose visualization but never focused on. Frankly when I think about it I always had a subtle sense of how campy it looked to me. But with this you’ve presented- yeah you really start to think of how horrifying that actually could have been, especially thinking this one was actually leaping and climbing with him in its grasp. Which begs the question of HOW BIG WAS THIS SUCKER???? A good thing this one had been killed considering just how strong it’s implied to be. Also- If that guy is literally the representation of the park worker that was in the book- he actually survived long enough to be airlifted to a hospital- but yea he didn’t make it regardless.

Looking at it from a for fun standpoint, yes, that would be awesome and would make sense in a way, but they do that with many things as a tactical deception. Looking at it logically, the raptor could not be, because it was stated that they shot it, and if you're doing that type of thing with an animal, you're gonna unload as many rounds into that animals vital points, then you're going to shoot it again to double tap it. After that, you're going to do multiple checks to make sure the animal is dead. After that, it differs, some places burn the animal immediately, some cut it open for science or medical research reasons, I've heard cases of them putting animals in meat grinders or wood chipper like machines. All I'm saying, in way too many words, is while it would be cool to have it be the Big One, it can't be. Even Jurassic Park employees would destroy the body after making sure it's dead.

@KlaytonFioriti hey man. Love this. I actually have thought about stuff like this. And you make a lot of sense. A couple things I do recall is that in the novel It is explained in great detail that the ingen worker was severly mauled and had sever deep muscular and skin lacerations and he died from said injuries So even if Muldoon was able to get Jopphrey away. He probably would have died anyway from severe trauma, blood loss and shock Also in the novel Muldoon says that the dinosaurs are built differently. A more complex nervous system and thicker bones around vital organs etc. so they don’t die quickly and they don’t go down easy either. So that ambush of shotgun fire was probably the only way to subdue the animal at that point. so I’m pretty sure that raptor died while still killing and devouring Jophery So I don’t blame Muldoon for wanting to have them all destroyed.

Are the velociraptors of the Jurassic series naturally vicious just because, or do they have a particular white hot hatred for humans for putting them in cages?
@RogueT-Rex8468

They are the first of the animals cloned. They were always aggressive likely due to what went into them as well as lack of upbringing. Raptors are shown to be of an impressive intelligence that, when left to its own, they are animalistic to an extreme.

@@RogueT-Rex8468 good point. Owen brought that up with his raptor squad. Thry were still vicious, but were a little more willing to listen to Owen's commands. The indominus, indoraptor, and scorpio were the first of their kind and were absolutely ruthless with poor upbringings and were treated like monsters.

In the novel. It was said that the raptors were just naturally viscous. And a type of animal that would be opportunistic when killing prey and becoming “man eaters”

I'd always assumed it was The Big One being brought in but I agree, it was likely another raptor being brought in. I wonder if in a connection from The Lost World either the raptors learned the behavior somehow. We know multiple types of Raptors were breed (Like the Tiger Stripped, Featherhead and the Gray/black spotted female) so very well whatever genome they crossed the original JP raptors with must have had an influence. You know what, it would not surprise me if this is the earliest form of "hybridization" we see in the JP universe. Consider this Klay. A Raptor not caring about food but the hunt. It stalks' its victims, tears them to shreds then moves on to the next. A raptor finds and locks onto a target, ina blood rage kind of way it will do anything to keep this target and kill it. Then later on we see this refined in TLW as the Tiger Raptors hunt down the Hunters in a sophisticated manner. Then JP 3 rolls around and not only do these raptors have pack tactics like communication but they actually have a, I hesitate to say morality, but when they have the chance they back down and retreat knowing its not worth the fight. So in short the JP raptors are actually the earliest hybrids being created witht he "weapons" intention design until later refined by the Indoraptor

This one is a great example of "Don't overthink it". Just like in Jaws where the woman is getting dragged around along the surface, they did it for visual impact; it is completely illogical and almost certainly physically impossible for the animal to pull and lift like that. This one is a definite "just enjoy the movie" case...

It's quite possible that they bred this one as a way to challenge the Big One, hence why is was so ravenous, as they wanted her to be as aggressive as possible for her first encounter with the Big One. I think Joffrey bled out, they 100% shot this raptor to death, a total fish in a barrel. It's more than likely that this particularly vicious raptor rapidly ripped and tore at the legs until it ripped up his femoral artery. Another idea is that eventually the raptor releases Joffrey, and Muldoon yanks him away, only to realize he is holding only half a park worker, it would have been an interesting foreshadow to Ray Arnold's death. Nublar raptors attack more like leopards, being high-speed ambush maulers, while Sorna raptors hunt more like lions, stalking and then quickly disabling prey, prioritizing vitals. Even Muldoon is clearly mauled to death judging by the amount of screaming. I'm currently working on a life sized taxidermy trophy of The Big One, the idea of safari hunting dinosaurs is one of the most interesting things one could do.

It’s clearly impossible to lift him the way we see in the film. People overthink. It’s as simple as this Spielberg thought the shot was cool. Just like the T Rex is somehow invisible in the final attack scene, or the shark in Jaws apparently has a baseball bat as it hits the hull repeatedly at half second intervals.

Fun fact #1, I always thought Jophery's name was Godfrey. Fun fact #2, when I was little I used to think he survived (somehow) Good explanation though of the possible events that occurred up to his death. As for Grant's foreshadowing of Muldoon's death, I love that death scene, and find myself muttering 'Clever Girl' every time I see it. Despite that, I really wanted Muldoon to live, since both in the book and in the film, he was the smartest JP employee on the island.

Is there confirmation on which raptor it was. I had always assumed it was "the big one" but her being transported into the park doesn't make sense unless she was handled on site b? However Muldoon makes it seem like he's been observing her for a while.

The Raptors had another paddock. The one that was to house them originally. For display when the park opened. The Big One was teaching the pack how to escape systematically. Testing the fences. They had to be moved from that paddock into the holding pen here due to the ferocious nature. This was more than likely the Big One being moved into the pen from the original paddock. Why she wasn’t tranked and sedated fully is the weird thing.

'You are alive when they start to eat you.' My guess is it was eating him. His facial expressions probably changed because it was gutting him. Poor guy. Also, the raptor was definitely killed. You hear multiple shotgun blasts, which would have been at close range.

True. And the only other weapons in this scene are M16A2s. Those gunshots were not from M16s. I hear at least 7 shotgun blasts from multiple directions. And the shotguns would have most likely been loaded with slugs. So that raptor was definitely killed.

Before watching this video... I know I'm going to regret watching this one. After watching the video... Yep, I was right. I knew I was going to regret watching this video. Here comes my rant below. *TRIGGER WARNING!* Another video that shows how Raptors are "vicious scary killing machines". Michael Crichton started this mess with the novel. And, Steven Spielberg brought Crichton's mess to the big screen. The rest is history. This is why I like the Raptors from the Jurassic World movies more (and why Blue is my favorite of them all). They're not nearly as brutal as their Jurassic Park counterparts, although they're no angels, either. Crichton and Spielberg gave the Raptors a bad name by wrongly depicting them that way. If I had made Jurassic Park my way, the Raptors (as well as the other predators) would have been much friendlier and never attack anyone unless they were provoked, teased, and tormented. In my version, the Raptor in the cage wouldn't attack Jophery at all, although she would push through the other workers and race back into the jungle to vanish from sight. I don't like this franchise as much as I once did...back when I didn't know any better and just watched them for entertainment. These films ruined the reputation of animals that, if left alone in peace, wouldn't have harmed anyone. And, they don't kill anything in sight just because they can. As Roland Tembo said in The Lost World: Jurassic Park: *Predators don't hunt when they're not hungry.* Apparently, these films overlooked Roland's quote and turned animals into vicious monsters! What's worse is that's what people want. They want scary, vicious, bloodthirsty monsters to attack, chase, and kill anything that moves. If you ask me, the Jurassic movies are no better than the Jaws movies...another franchise that turned animals (in this case, sharks) into bloodthirsty monsters. The only difference between the two franchises is that they replaced sharks with dinosaurs. But, in both cases, they've become nothing more than monsters. I leave you with Alan Grant's quote from Jurassic Park III. *What John Hammond and InGen did at Jurassic Park is create genetically engineered theme-park monsters. Nothing more and nothing less.*

Well if you read the novel you’d know hammond would never let one of the animals be killed. I’d guess they used buckshot because they also mention in the novel how hard they are to kill. I’ve always felt this was the big one being moved to a quarantine pen from the paddock.
