The Hidden Butterfly Effect in The Lost World: Jurassic Park - Subtext in Films

The first Jurassic Park film is full of moments that depict the grand majesty and incredible beauty of ancient creatures brought back to life after millions of years of extinction
and although the film has a darker side to this incredible window into the prehistoric past, it still remains mostly light-hearted and uplifting, given its main character arc is
the focus of a child hating man learning to appreciate a life lesser than his own. Alan Grant serves as the main protagonist for the first movie and his personality is directly
reflected in the overrall presentation of the story, as well as the lense in which we view the dinosaurs and respectful characters. Its sequel, The Lost World however is far
different. Making Ian Malcolm the primary protagonist of the second movie gives the film a deeply cynical world view, as well as one that is often sarcastic and remarkably darker
than that of its predecessor.
The Lost World Jurassic Park is the primary source of this video's information and its not necessarily a The Lost World Movie Review or what should be called The Lost World Jurassic Park Review but more or less an analysis on Subtext in Films and specifically one about the Jurassic Park Butterfly Effect and no there is no Indoraptor in this video. Now The Lost World Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park Chaos Theory go kind of hand in hand (even when some misspell it as Jurassic Park Chaos Thoery ) and despite many Jurassic Park Theories being odd and more or less head canon, this one is actually a fact. With this being a The Lost World Reveal that I didn't catch until my 20's I can honestly say that the Thrasher Tyrannosaurus leaves the Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Tyrannosaurus as having a lot to live up to and my Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Analysis and Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Teaser Break Down will come as soon as the Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom New Dinosaurs are revealed and this fragmented description is completed. :)

I never understood why Roland let Sarah walk around with clothes covered in the blood of a baby rex when they talked about it's ability to scent for nearly a mile. Then I realized he probably did it on purpose as a lure. God I love Roland's character.

@@JeffBoyardeeSon I think it was made weaker by the end sequence in San Diego. It felt too much like an attempt at recreating a Kaiju environment. The characters and the way they manifest are also a little weaker than in the first movie. If they improved on that, and went with the sequence involving Ludlow's original script death in place of the San Diego rampage, this movie would in my opinion be much more highly regarded -- that said, I personally still love it.

I've always loved this movie since I saw it for a treat at the cinema for my 5th birthday 🙏The only scene I personally don't like is when Kelly kills the raptor with her gymnastics kick.. It was way too silly for me and made the raptor look like such a weak punk. I liked the idea that Rolan was gonna kill the raptor by shooting it.. It just sounded way better.. If they had done this and maybe used Kelly's gymnastics talent to possibly help them escape by opening an out of reach door or something I think it would have been far better

I kinda disagree. Tim is way up on the fence when the alarm starts. If Alan had not made the joke, he would have not made it all the way down. Also, Alan tells Tim to jump only after the alarm starts, so Tim being one meter lower would make no difference. Tim would still hesitate and would still get jolted.

Another butterfly effect from this movie is when the group goes to rest before more travel, the scene where Dieter wonders off to use the restroom. Right before that scene Roland notices Sarah is leaving blood tracks on bushes and branches she passes by, in the resting scene he proceeds to approach her to ask if she's injured to which she informs him it's the baby T-Rexs blood. Roland as an experienced hunter knew this would make the T-Rex's track them but planned to use it to his advantage. However he did not expect that he would have to leave the camp to look for Dieter there for not giving him the advantage of a first attack on the Rex.
@AzraelThanatos
@AzraelThanatos 6 жыл бұрын
Just as an interesting thought about the way the movie portrays characters, is that we have Tembo and Nick pretty much as mirrors of each other in how they develop. Roland is portrayed as the great white hunter, and is pretty much the only character in the movie that comes off as if based on someone from the original Lost World novels (He's pretty much a modern take on Roxton). Now, most takes on big game hunters isn't really a positive thing in modern times unlike in the older pulps where they tended to be heroes. The movie pretty much hints at him being far more than just the hunter early on, especially with the deleted scene with Ajay. As the story progresses, he is shown to largely care for his people and not deal well with idiots and is shown to worry about even the gatherers with his comment about Sarah when he thought she was injured. He's pretty much shown to actually be a heroic character by the end of it. Nick comes the opposite way. He's the one shown to be more of the "action hero" archetype combined with being an environmentalist and a friendly guy. There are hints of something darker with his comments about Greenpeace and other things that point towards him being rougher there. Then you hit the scene where he's also revealed to have been brought in as a saboteur and one that knows little about animals in the first place as shown when he brought the baby rex back to the trailer. He's also shown not to care that much about human life such as with the camp and later with his comments about the bullets he stole. Sure, he still made the run for the radio, but anyone not a "closer friend" didn't matter to him, he didn't care if a pile of the hunters died as long as Tembo didn't get his trophy. It's an interesting thought that Nick and Tembo developed in mirrored methods over the course of the movie, it's something that, currently, feels like something done intentionally and helped with the darker theming of the movie. Also makes you think about why Nick didn't show up during the San Diego Incident, the theory that he ended up jailed for his stunts makes a whole lot of sense there...

Something else about Roland I liked is that at the start of the movie he only cares about getting his trophy, but by the time he does get it he really doesn't care about it, because the loss of his friend is bigger.

Nicks sabotaging and Rex kidnapping actually led to most casualties in the whole film. The moment he kidnapped the Rex, it's parents just kept chasing everyone down, causing Eddie to die and also some hunters who kept fleeing from the Rex when the Rexes chased them. Of course there are also a few deaths which he didn't cause like the one from Dieter and those who died in San Diego xD

Klayton Fioriti Probably not, while I dont dislike it and I do still really enjoy it, it is my least favourite movie of the series. Once again not like it's a bad thing as the Jurassic series is my personal favourite period. But there isn't a whole lot in the movie that makes me appreciate it as much. The lost world I initally disliked but grew to love it a lot. The hidden meanings and the story actually being significant and having impact on the world and even the character motivations had a purpose and made sense. 3 just felt like a pointless save the kid from island plot and themselves because they can't get off the island, and the movie itself knew that. The main big praise and re watch appeal for jurassic park 3 for me, is the part when they are in the abandoned in gen lab. Fuck that was one of the best parts of 3 and in the series. It was creepy, eerie and the music and atmosphere was one of the best from the series. I wish we got majority of 3 based on that. The failed experiments, crazy ideas and tests ingen attempted, that they tried hiding and masking behind this grand theme park known as Jurassic park. But behind the curtains lies deep dark secrets of the creation of these Frog gene spliced Dinosaurs. God damn thinking about these ideas makes me wish that they focused on another cast trying to uncover all the mistakes and shady practises of ingen and the movie focusing on the abadoned site as the cast find the horrors left behind. Could of made for a really different and unique experience for the Jurassic park series and maybe would of been like a mystery/horror film, which I believe the Jurassic series would thrive on and would be a breath of fresh air. I think 3 is overhated but not underrated, but maybe that's because I still like and enjoy the movie even with all its flaws while others seem to really dislike it. But that's just my opinion and personal take on the 3rd. Would love to hear others thoughts about this.

lucky dominguez I don't think its flaws are "too powerful". It does lack some things the first two films had but like what the other guy with the long ass comment said, it's overhated but not underrated. The main flaw is that they didn't focus on a potentially interesting topic on Ingen's crazy experiments, secrets and creations but more on running away from dinosaurs ( which is actually fun and kinda exciting IMO ) and finding Eric..

Klayton Fioriti I love the 3rd one mostly because I grew up watching it, same with the first 2 films but I hope you find something interesting in it. But for now, it's Spino being the highly-aggressive apex predator, running and the introduction of different dinosaurs..

Bravo Klayton... Bravo. I absolutely loved this totally objective review of what was arguably one of the best Jurassic Park movies within the franchise to date. Not only did the second one capture me as a child due to its on set natural beauty and excellent animatronic work, but it continues to capture me now, for those same reasons coupled with a rich plotline, and the way it challenges my beliefs and ways of critical thinking and analyzation regarding humanity and the good/ poor decisions we are sometimes capable of making without understanding it's long term effects.

Well yea, Nick is responsible for the butterfly effect. Though the direct responsibility still lies with the people who made the decisions of going after the Rex. Nick was not the one who tranquilized the Rex, nor was he the one who forgot to throw away their bloody shirt that initially led the Rexes to the campsite. Nick just caused the ripple effect that clashed all these incidents together

Nick isn't the one who decided "Man, this T Rex has really killed a lot of people. Let's take it to a densely populated city on the mainland! What could possibly go wrong?", Ludlow was. Nick just took steps to prevent the killing of a dinosaur for sport, which is, on it's own, a noble goal.

It's interesting because when you think about the laws of science one of the fundamentals is entropy, or disorganization/chaos exhibited in systems. All systems want to move to a more chaotic state and decreasing entropy can cause huge changes in systems. I think this is very much shown here with how these very much wild animals are the system that is at a low entropy at the beginning of Jurassic Park, but the universe wants to stay as chaotic as possible, so the events of the first film play out as they do as a result of the universe returning to a more natural state.

Let me add that the scene near the beginning where Malcom talks to Ludlow at Hammond's house is some of the best acting Jeff Goldblum has ever done. He speaks to Ludlow about what he has done to undermine the truth he has been trying to spread, expressing some anger and disdain for him, and at the end of the scene, when Ludlow walks by him and says "in a month's time, it will be long forgotten", Malcom grabs his arm and says "not by me", and there is genuine fear in the way he utters this line. It's fantastic.

Controversial opinion here but I genuinely love Jeff Goldblum’s acting in the Lost World even more than in Jurassic Park. Don’t get me wrong, he was amazing in JP1. But what really stood out for me in the Lost World is that he went back to a character that he hadn’t played in a few years and not only played them again but played them differently on purpose, with a whole layer of trauma on top of the character that we already knew and loved. I know it’s never explicitly said on screen that he has it but I’d say his portrayal of Dr Malcolm in the Lost World is one of the best depictions of PTSD I’ve ever seen put to film. All the tiny little details are so spot on that a small part of me is genuinely worried that he was working from personal experience! 😢 I really hope it was just very good research but he was that convincing that I’m not always sure.

The Lost World was my favorite out of the 4 so far. People definitely do not give it enough credit. The adventure, initial mystery, plot twists, and suspense are all excellent in the film. And most of all it dares to ask the question 'what if?' to a whole new level in the series.

The first two Jurassic Park movies will forever hold a special place in my heart. The first one was the first movie my family got to see in theaters as a family, and I'll never forget that experience (even though myself and my younger brother were still considered too young to really handle a PG-13 film). And the second one is when I met one of my best friends, as we were watching it in class and ended up debating on whether Ajay said "don't go into the tall grass" or "go into the tall grass". Ended up dating the guy for 10 years before we had a mutual falling out, but we still discuss that scene with fond memories and nostalgia.

What I like about Lost Word that is missing from the later sequels is the Spielberg action set-pieces. Pure showmanship. The see-sawing and reversals here are a contrast with the more linear set pieces in JP3 and Jurassic World.

I see it now, thanks to you explaining this 'butterfly effects' thingie. I thought it was just Malcolm, being a paranoid chaos theorist, suffered from the trauma in his first visit (and last?) to Isla Nublar. I can only guess what happened in between JP and LW timeline, yet the way they subtly contradict between each, is really admirable. Also, T-Rex facing the camera is just so cute. I could see it evolving so many years later into youtube's cats and dogs.

I love the scene freeze frame at 7:53. Mainly for the fact it's an unintended "before and after" image. Let me explain: Dinosaurs died and turned into fossils, which over millions of years turned into fossil fuels, thus giving us an oil businesses like Chevron. Not only that, but Malcom driving that sweet apple red 68 GTO convertible AKA "The Goat" is another unintended reference to the first movie if you catch my drift. God I love the second one so much more than the others.

One thing that always bothered me about Nick sabotaging Rolands ammo (besides how difficult it actually is to pull the slugs out of the cartridge. Seriously someone would have noticed him struggling to do that). Is that an experienced hunter like Roland only had those 2 rounds with him. He didn't have a reload.
@ConnorNotyerbidness

Nitro express rounds are Very heavy and traditionally the big game hunter with a nitro express rifle had an ammo carrier with him so as to not restrict the hunter Thats why ahjay had that backpack He carried the supplies, and spare ammo

I liked Nick, but if he shows up again I hope he at least learned something from taking the bullets and thus causing the San Diego incident. Temper his wild devotion to naturalism with a little temperance and care for Humans, and he'd be a strong, heroic character, almost like a mentor figure for Owen Brady. Hey, maybe that's where they were going with the similarity in names.
@mercyfabian4885

He's an example of the extreme naturalist. The one who loves animals so completely that he doesn't care about the human cost. He reminds me of those who want service animals and K9 units to be dissolved because they claim it's enslaving the animal for human services. On the lighter side, I like Vince Vaughn's acting in this movie. Usually, he plays the same dry, sarcastic guy, but in this one he had better range.

I always considered The Lost World to be a very underrated movie. I think it's a good sequal in the same way Aliens is a good sequal to Alien. It explores different themes within the same universe, It's both new and old. It doesn't top the original, but it also doesn't try to

You summed up my feelings perfectly it doesn't try to one up the first one like the third one tried to one up the Lost World and it fit within the world so much better it was the best sequel movie I have seen don't think we will be seeing movies of this caliber for a while though.

Nick Van Owen killed everyone in the Lost World. He brought back the baby T-Rex that killed Eddy, which got blood all over the jacket of Sarah, which then caused the T-Rex to follow them. He also removed the bullets from the gun which the hunter could have used to save everyone, but had to resort to tranquilizers, which later killed everyone on the SS Venture and some people in California. Also if he never released the captured dinosaurs (which were all herbivores) everyone would still be alive.
