First service - John is correct! I did an Oil Analysis on the Mrs car at its first 15,000klm service by Techenomics in Newcastle. While all contaminates (including various metals) were elevated they were still inside acceptable levels. Also worth noting is that most manufacturers use a much superior oil filter out of the factory as well. For example on new Toyota’s and Lexus they use a “Depth” filter and not a standard single element paper filter. The factory filters are very thick and consist of a complex membrane to trap more contaminates and also at smaller microns. So don’t panic - as John said some quality engineers are behind this! Personally I think you risk more damage from poor servicing practices - or contamination at service!

Most OEM filters seem to be switching from old-style paper elements to synthetic fibre elements with smaller pore sizes. But you can't beat a good full-depth filter for sure. I used an old Trasko brand for years and it was great.

Short trips and length of time Vs Hard driving - another evidence based example of Johns comments. One of my vehicles was used for short trips for 8 months. I decided that I better change the oil and for an experiment I had the oil tested. Sure enough it came back with high levels of fuel and moisture. As a result metals were elevated (but still in acceptable levels) compared to previous Oil Analysts - most definitely if I had have left the oil in any longer it would have done damage. Compare this to my 500Hp Supra the oil in the short trip vehicle was in poor condition in regards to contamination. For the record both vehicles were using the same brand of high quality PAO synthetic engine oil. John does not make this stuff up as he goes!

I saw a video on YT of one of these late first oil changes. It was a 2.0l turbo gasoline engine. There were plenty of small metal parts inside the oil filter - he took the whole oil filter apart. The whole volume of the oil was filtered out by the mechanic and there were metal parts floating in the oil as well. So there you go - the car manufacturer assumed it is safe to have metal particles floating in the oil in a new generation turbo gasoline engine. Make your own judgment, otherwise, German companies will do that for you. :) Yes, the brand was a high class German vehicle.
@graemeottey
@graemeottey 4 жыл бұрын
Waldemar Ishibashi as long as it’s floating in the oil and captured by the filter, that’s ok. If the oil starts breaking down and losing the shear tension of the oil, that’s when the suspended metal becomes wearing metal.

@@graemeottey Of course, he was just curious if there is any crap inside the car oil filter. He also took the whole volume of the oil that came out of the pan and filtered it by himself. I do think that the European car makers have actually extended their cars service interval out so long as to make sure the engine is effectively destroyed in 10 years. BMW for instance monitors the oil quality and usage to extend the interval to over 2 years. This is meant to cover harsh use. However if you work on these cars you find all the oil seals have hardened to a crisp by 5 or so years effectively making the car an absolute nightmare for the 2nd or 3rd owner. Some people argue this is due to excessive heat. But it's not as European cars have big oil coolers. It's due to the contaminated oil.

When Ethylene Glycol antifreeze came out, Buick had to put their head bolts in blind holes, as the coolant would now climb down the threads into the oil pan. Ford’s first attempt at extended service intervals in 1961 was a disaster, although the big FL-1A oil filter did survive until quite recently. GM specified 10 PSI for the rear tires of early GTO’s. Car manufacturers have been claiming their paint never need waxing for some time. They still sell wax. Those oil change intervals are mandated by Gooberments who don’t think peasants should have a car at all, and are only designed to make the heap survive the warranty. I change it at 500 miles or several billion millimeters, then go on a 3,000 mile schedule. I put the tires somewhat above the recommended level. And I use Meguiars #26 wax 2X a year. I squirt LP3 in the holes in the bottom of the doors and body 1X a year, because their DumDum will crack and hold water on the seams on a carefully formulated schedule. Horror upon horrors I use Armorall on the dash and put some on the serpentine belt once a year. Here’s a real shocker: all transmission fluid will last the life of the transmission. Change that shit out.

You can do intermediate servicing, most service books have provisions for it. Toyota and Volkswagen for instance do. The books also says you should do more frequent servicing if driving in severe conditions which is pretty much do you drive every day, then that's considered severe. Further again as another example, Volkswagen servicing books say you should do more frequent servicing if the fuel in your country has a high sulfur content, that means Australian cars should be doing the intermediate servicing along with the regular intervals just because of the pump fuel we use.

John made a good point about the filters. Old filters used to go into bypass mode quite often so the metal would be released into the bearings so 1500 at first service was required. The only real answer to this question is to have a sample of oil sent off for analysis. But really who is going to do that...

Something interesting is that the owners manual for my car specifically says to NOT do the first oil change until it is due. The only reasons I can think of is if they use a special type of oil from the factory or a special break in additive they want to remain in the engine until the break in is complete or maybe they don't want synthetic oil in the engine during break in.

Hey cobber thanks for the videos, i have a mixed message was hoping you could clear up. The "'trust the engineers", here, seems slightly at odds with the "sealed for life transmission" video. If the manufacturers target is aproxx 150k transmission life would it not follow that the engine is engineered to similar / no more than double those targets and your 'oil is cheaper than rebuilds' stance, holds true. Does not seem unreasonable to assume a person considering supplementary servicing surely fits in the long term +300k,km owner category.

Regarding the first service...always make sure to read the Owner's Manual carefully and completely. My current car ('16 Hyundai Veloster Turbo) lists 5000 miles/8000km between oil changes. But reading up on the details indicates that the _first_ change is to be after the run-in period of 1000 miles/1600km. So presumably it depends on the manufacturer to some extent, unless oil technology has changed dramatically in the past four years.
@MrWilliam.Stewart
@MrWilliam.Stewart 4 жыл бұрын
It's perfectly safe. It safe to say the manufacturers can sell more replacement vehicles long term if they simply stretch out the vital first oil change interval. It's rarely going to manifest itself to the first owner/first 5 or 6 years hey. It's not like any manufacturers have become market leaders by selling durable products, have they?

Had an arguement with my Subaru dealership mechanic about this. The twunt was arguing that the 15,000 km service interval was appropriate for a STi. The mechanic was arguing that a shorter service interval (of my choice) will cause harm to the engine that wouldn't be covered under warranty. Lets just say it was the first and last time I used the dealership. I have no idea why manufacturers are advertising absolutely ludicrously long service intervals.
@Elf1492

Agreed on the service intervals, just follow what's stated in the manual. I belong to the cult that does a first oil change before 1500km. Lucky enough for me, I have the consumer law on my side, which allows me to have the liberty to look for a 3rd party qualified technician to do a first oil change, with the original parts sourced by myself, without voiding any dealership warranty. The sourced parts and labor cost me just under $70, in exchange for peace of mind. Know your rights and just do whatever that makes you feel better.

It occurred to me after I read some comments that the original filter used by manufacturers is a special "Depth" filter only used for the first 15,000km that doing a standard oil filter change at 1500km may actually be detrimental unless you can source the same original filter used by the manufacturers.

Most modern engines typically need only rings and bore run in nowadays. And rings can be considered run in within an hour or so if loaded properly. Half to just about full load without too many revs with power on and off cycles will usually do the job within an hour or two. Anything else in the engine is usually that well manufactured and machined that it doesn't require any special conditions set. As a matter of fact you can adversely condition the engine if its operated too softly in its early hours. And most high performance engines have typically already been run in either in testing in quality assurance testing after the assembly line OR by the dealers predelivery guy that has had a little fun with it before the new owner even sets foot in it.

One comment already, about lab oil analysis check. Less expensive, would be to check the tissue used to wipe the dipstick? Old timers said, At least change the oil filter? Decades ago, word was, that Porsche engines were manufactured to be redlined, new. Also, crate purchased, US race engines, dyno run in? Back in the day, when engines were rebuilt :) They well boiled new pistons in water. A wooden handle, with a hole for the piston pin, was used to insert the hot piston, into oiled up, new bored & honed cylinder. Elbow grease did much of the run in. Pistons were numbered, per bore. I try to remember - This done, without the piston rings? Some run in was still needed, to bed in new piston rings & bearing shells. Graphite added to mineral oil? First oil/ filter change at 1000 (Statute/ Seppo) Miles. Remember those? (1600km?) :)

New engines maybe be filled with special break-in oil from the factory to last until the first recommended change interval. I would leave it in there and follow the factory’s recommendation. At the halfway mark I would change the oil filter only to remove the most harmful particles in the oil system.

I have a question. Is it OK to use fully synthetic 5W40 or 5W30 instead of semi synthetic 10W40 oil in Renault K7J engine? I want to use API-SN rated fully synthetic oil, but there is no fully synthetic oil in 10W40 grade, only semi synthetic (which I bought and used last time). The manual says that 10W40 is to be used for temperatures higher that -15 oC and -20oC, while 5W40 and 5W30 is to be used for temperatures higher than -25 oC. Here in Southern Europe, we don't get temperatures lower than about -15 oC in the city, which is why I think that 10W40 is suitable, and 5W40 or 5W30 is not. But one is semi synthetic andthe other is fully synthetic. What should I do?

Yep. My Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.75L turbo says 17500km service interval. No fkn way. I am a chemical engineer (but synthetic oil chem is not my forte) but still don’t trust oil getting smoking hot running through the turbo being too quality for 17500km. You have to take the front Tyre off to change to oil filter, so it’s just drop the oil at 8750km for me. I want to give this car to my daughter (now 9) so not going to Scrooge mcduck on $60 of oil.

1500km services usually don't include an oil and filter change, it's a very basic check. After reviewing the dash cam footage when our last new Kia had its 1500km "service" the guy just changed the service sticker, topped up the washer bottle AND the coolant expansion bottle with tap water, all while disrespecting my wife for her choice of music. He didn't pull the dip stick or lift the car off the ground. I spoke to the principal about this and he just retorted "that's why businesses don't like having cameras running in the workshop". I haven't been back to them since and never will.

Hi John. I have to disagree strongly with your discount scenario. You mates a KIA have been advertising base model Ceratos at $19,990 drive away since MY18s came in (now $20,290). They have always shown a RRP of around 24K with a "Discounted" price. I can't remember seeing them ever at full RRP. KIA marketing can help with a fact check if you need. Bottom line, Your already discounted price IS your RRP. It seems KIA only ever expected to sell them at the lower price so I would assume that any costs and margins are based of this.

G'day John,yepi agree with all the oil service shit you thrown down,,having been in HEAVY Industry for some time..and all we do is filter oil,,that has been cycling around steel mills for 40 years with out a change,,can relate,to filtration and heat,all very important,and the reason we change oil in cars,,not for the Metal components,,but the oil is usually stuffed with fuel by-pass and moisture,changing a filter is next to nothing considering replacement cost, the other thing a lot of body's don't know is all oil pumps have by pass valves for when the filter is full,,this then lets unfiltered oil to lubricate your engine,you may have super oil pressure,,but oil pump has to over ride by pass valve,So keep an eye on oil pressure if it start to get better,,i'd be changing filters asap. but not happy with a lot of the oils available,,all this 5/w 50 shit,,no need for oils that thin here in auz,,unless you live in a blizzard,,The other thing that fucks modern day oils is the additives,,I reckon some of the filters are taking additive out as oil as it gets older,I know some oils have long chain polymers in them that actually cover contaminants and makes them big enough for filter to catch, SO Change your oil,,sooner better than later,,Diesel oils have high detergent rates,generally why it so black on change,Don't recommend using diesel oil in any petrol engine,,usually washes away carbon seal ring when piston is tdc,and then the shit starts,, what a lot of filter manufacture don't tell you is filter size,, whether a beta rating or absolute micron size,,this would be nice to know,,

Thanks for all the information John! And I have a question. My wife fell in love with the new Mazda CX-30 and we are considering buying the G20 Touring. However, I read that in six months Mazda will start bringing the new Skyactiv X engine to Australia. Is it too big a risk to buy the release version and in six months I have an outdated model? Will this new engine be such a big differential that it will devalue the current models? Thank you very much!
@mrslcom
@mrslcom 4 жыл бұрын
Adam Smith. The SkyActiv X looks promising but it’s not always a good idea to get the newest technology as it is unproven and not time tested. Once introduced, you can bet that they will make gradual corrections and improvements over time. Older engines maybe less efficient but they tend to be more reliable.

What can it hurt to do the service early? On the reasonable assumption that manufacturers have an incentive to allow a certain amountt of engine wear that will require you to purchase a new vehicle eventually, it seems a cheap bet to change oil a bit more frequently. Compared to a premature engine failure it is a fairly small cost and not much worth debating.
@Pretzil43

Okay, sure, oil tech is better and it's not necessary to run in... but when you pick up a 'brand new' car that has a 2018 build date and has traveled half way around the world and been sitting around numerous shipyards for 2 years since the oil was added, is it still in optimal condition? Engineers are great, but their job is to design a service regime that guarantees the car will last the life of the warranty, after that, what's their incentive?

Another thing to consider with turbos is letting the engine cool if it has been running hard. let it idle for 1-5 minutes, depending on conditions. otherwise your turbo could be red hot and cooking and damaging some of your oil. over a year/15,000 this adds up. i service my isuzu mux every 7500. it only does medium and long trips, but i show it some love ;) btw john. we don’t all enjoy looking at woman. can we keep this to just cars?
