I have a memory from 1st grade when it was mother’s day, and i remember we were making cards. One of the kids wrote it to their dad instead. They got in trouble and started crying and i remember the teacher saying “Were writing mother’s day cards! Not father’s day cards. I swear when you started crying, I completely broke. My biological father left my mom, sister, and I when I was born and I have never met him or seen him ever. I don't know what he looks like or what he is like at all. When I was about five, my mom got married to my 'dad'. I call him my dad because he has been there for me when my real father wasn't. Through this marriage, my mom and him had two kids, my little brother and sister. Last summer my mom and him separated. It was awful and I didn't know if he was still going to be there for my older sister and I. But he stayed. He stayed and took us in as if we were still his kids. This is something my biological father has never done. Thank you so much Shane for telling us these things about you because whether you know it or not, you are actually helping some of us. I go through the struggle everyday of wondering whether my biological father loves me or not. But after hearing you say those words about being thankful for the people who take care of you, you've made me realize just how lucky I am to have my mom and 'dad'. I feel like me and him are kinda the same because: My dad cheated on my mom and my mom and dad got a divorce when I was 5 and from there he tried to make my moms life hell and they would argue all the time and when I didn’t call him he would call the police and they would come to my house. Then when I was 10-11-12-13 which is now I eat all the time and now I’m insecure about my body because I have fat thighs and stretch marks all of my thighs and when I wear shorts my younger cousins ask me what are those. I cried watching this but it's more of a happy cry. I know this has been affecting Shane for some time now and it's nice for him to finally get some closure and reassurance on some things. I think he's going on some positive life changing events and it's so great to see him do so. I think no matter what, it's going to be beneficial :)

So very true. Once you're an adult you see that being an adult doesn't make you perfect. You are still that unsure kid that is trying to figure out life, you're just physically older. How we see our parents when we are little: as perfect, fully done growing, all-knowing superheroes, just isn't accurate. Learning to understand, forgive and accept whatever mistakes our parents made is a big part of growing up. And if we have kids of our own one day, chances are we will make our own mistakes. And hopefully in time, our kids will forgive us too.

Shane is definitely right that it can look different when you’re an adult. My dad left when I was a kid and he left me with an abusive mother. I thought I would never forgive him for that. But I found out later she was horrible to him and he never thought she would turn on me and my sister. So he left because it’s all he knew how to do. But when I grew up, and surprise surprise married an abusive man, and I needed help getting me and my daughter away from him I called my dad. Me and my daughter have been living it with him for five years now. He paid for me to go back to school and he has been a wonderful grandfather to my daughter. This is a man that I hated so much when I was a child and now I don’t know what I would do without him.

She is awesome I am so lucky to have her. She took me in like her own child, and it very rare to find a stepparent to just swoop you in like that. My life is full of love and thankfulness.
