I once stayed in an AirBNB that was very close to Boro Park, and I sort of wandered into the heart of that neighborhood by accident. It was like going back in time with the women wearing, dark, conservative clothing and baby strollers everywhere. The people were so friendly, and the shops very clean and inviting. I love to see and feel different cultures and people, and those few days near Boro Park were a happy and welcoming experience for me. I have MAJOR respect for people who preserve their ways of living in today's world.

The way Hasidism is practiced today is very different than it was practiced by its founder the Baal Shem Tov Today much more lack of personal freedomnand choice Very fundementalist and rabbinic based There is very little personal freedom or choice It is set up this way as control You are expected to marry young and have large families You cannot just go off and go to school _,get a job/apt. You get married after approx 2-4 meetings There is no dating people are introduced for purpose of marriage There is no expectation of love it is believed it happens over time after marriage If wife wants a divorce the husband has to be willing to give a "get" and if he does not she cannot remarry Very strict modesty dress rules-if you deviate not good Yiddish is primary language not English Most time in school spent on religious study Very minimal time on secular subjects College viewed as waste of time and frowned upon Emphasis on Talmud and Torah studies If someone wants to leave community can be challenging just based on lack of education No tv/no smart phones reason to keep people uneducated and dependent . They are discouraged to go to the police for help and beware of the outside world Those who rebel risk big problems not just for themselves but for their families There are exceptions I would say Lubavitch is more liberal and Satmar very conservative and strict . Not everyone is the same. I would say except for Lubavitch you really have a tough life if Hasidic

Absolutely incredible video. I got here by way of Peter Santenello's vids w/ Shloime. Both of the video series are excellent and show different aspects of Hasidic life. While I may have a more liberal bent to my views, I was raised a strict christian - and there was not an emphasis on happiness or helping others with no thought to ourselves, which is a true shame....and likely why I no longer consider myself christian. Shloime seems like a truly giving and good man and I appreciate his love for his family and culture. I also appreciate the openess he shows to other cultures and people: I wish more people would show this type of kindness and generosity of spirit. Thanks to both of you for the videos.

@@pinkypromise111 maybe I wasn't raised as you were but I spent at least half my life studying the bible, I've read it several times, and I spent years attending different churches & studying different religions. I have a darn good life without the existence of a god in my life.

@@prettypinklady69 You studied religion half your life and no relationship with God ? Well as the scripture said, 2 Tim 3:7 always learning but never coming to the knowledge of the truth. Romans 1:21,22 Because that, when they knew God ,they glorified him not as God, neither were they thankful; but became vain in their imaginations ,and THEIR foolish heart was darkened . Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools , ( The wisdom of this world is foolishness unto God) Doesn’t matter how much you read about God ,it’s about having a relationship with God . Devil knows and believes all about God, but he ain’t getting into heaven ! As for your remark about proselytizing , Scripture states to preach the truth. How will people know what the scripture says unless they hear the truth of Gods word and not mans word? 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is God - breathed and is profitable for doctrine ,for conviction, for Correction for instruction in righteousness; And my righteousness comes from what Jesus did for me not anything that I earned .Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves : it is the GIFT OF GOD . 2 Corinthians 4:4 In who the god ( little g) of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God ,should shine on them . You have no need of a god in your life because that is what you chose! Matt 13: 15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed THEIR eyes . Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and TURN,and I would heal them . P.S. You said you have a darn good life without (a god) little g , in your life right? How would you know if you never had a relationship with GOD???

@@marilynringel9228 hey Marilyn. Thanks for your words. I kind of did know what you say - I think, as a more world-engaged Jew, I was quite relieved and taken to see the fun and inclusion evidenced in Here be Barr's video. And I was a little romanced to think "what if I could keep my own daughter so protected?" from the miseries and confusions of the world, especially most recently. I do know from my own involvement in a certain spiritual community, things can get creepy when they stray from principles and become tethered to people. I have suffered in such a situation and even as a mature adult found it difficult to disentangle myself. I spoke in sincerity and admiration for what I saw in the video. You mentioned, we Jews are sometimes the most mystified and distanced by the culture shown here. I would be ever so curious to hear what I am guessing may be a complex story you have involving this culture. Many gratitudes and happinesses, Rebekah🌼

@@rebekahcuriel-alessi2239 I'm not Hasidic and never was but have had many years of exposure of others and from meeting people -reading My feeling is that any group that puts such severe limits on personal freedom needs to be questioned I understand the level of protectedness you talk about There is alot of garbage out there on internet and TV. People have no guidelines how to live so I am very respectful What I am talking about is the level of lack of choices For example in some sects your daughter woukd even would be required to wear thick stockings in the summer for modesty reasons. Actually would be all year round and skirts covering 4in or so below knees If she did not dress within a guideline even as a child there would be a problem for you. Daughters cannot just go off on their own and get their own apt and go to college and be single . It does not work this way There is an expectation to marry let's say by 20 and start having children Many children Men do not have it so easy. Most of their waking time is spent in study and prayer little focus on secular subjects. Push for marriage and for both men and women there is no dating. I won't say you are forced to marry anyone but you cannot just marry anyone even if Jewish In some sects even something like sports is frowned upon and viewed as a waste of time You cannot just go to a library - if you go you have to go off to a different neighborhood so you do not get caught If there is a questionable abuse situation it is not encouraged to go to the police. Hasidism have their own beit din (justice system) Again there are many different sects Lubavitch is probably the most open and accepting of other Jews and interaction and strictness-they do alot of good work and although they are Hasidic I view them a little differently. Satmar/Gur/Skyver are very different and more isolationist. Hasidism is not traditional Judaism -it only came into being last few hundred years -practice of it today is not the way it was founded. This is no different from many other groups. There are good people and bad people in every group. Read about Kiryas Joel and the level of poverty Many kids and dependence on government for benefits Is it everyone no Similar to other groups. One of may reasons people do not want Hasidim in communities and taking over school boards This happens in all different groups in society My point is that any fundementalist group or sects of any religion that severely limits personal freedom is questionable We need guidelines in society. Does infidelity exist 'yes Abuse -yes Benefit abuse yes just like other groups in society. Just emphasizing that you cannot just go off and live the way you would in mainstream society. You cannot just go off toba college and study what you want. Imagine living with restrictions like this. It is not good to just live loose and crazy but it is not good to be at the other extreme where you need to live very strictly and without much personal freedom - in addition to being in big trouble and reported within these groups Lack of education and limit in life choices is not good There needs to be a healthy balance and Hasidism is more about conformity at the other end . It can be difficult to leave when you lack resources. Some leave with loss of family lack of support . Think about having a good part of your life determined by others. Lsck of choice and freedom Again there are exceptions. You can be a good loving person without such a high level of strictness and other people getting into your business snd privacy. You cannot justpick up and leave when you have limited resources . Again there are exceptions. For example I saw a great video about a very loving Satmar woman who was very accepting of her children who dud not necessarily follow her way All these comments are with sincerity. Basically each follows his or her path but it should be done without fear or control -this goes for any religious group of any kind

Here Be Barr and Shloime Zionce, your video is great! Loving it. I mainly work with the jewish hasidic women as they shop to our showroom in NYC for their stores. I've always been amazed with their life. Having many kids and running business. I'm pretty close to my customers who invited me many times but i've never went to their house. I will send you link to my friends in NYC and France who is trying to understand the community. I just check your page Shloime and you seems to be a very open minded person and well traveled. It will be great to do a video about the wives that runs all businesses in Boro Park, Williamsburg, Monroe, Monsey and Lakewood. They are sharp and smart. I got to tried all sweets for all jewish holiday, and yes, it's a delish-:))

Please read my comments I think it will help you to have a better understanding of the culture. They are not part of regular society nor do they care what you and I think The man being interviewed is the exception to these communities He is more worldly and open He is trying to present these communities in a positive light and I get it There is very limited personal freedom.and choice Would you want this for yourself ? I'm all fairness each sect is different Lubavutch is very open compared to other groups and I view them differently in certain ways Other sects much more strict and rigid Satmar/Skyver and Gur Good and bad people in all groups I am talking about lack of personal freedom and decision making Not having control and freedom Hasidism is not traditional Judaism It is not thousands of years old The founder of the Hasidic. Movement in the 1700s the Baal Shem Tov would not recognize its practice today in many areas. This is no different than many groups. I'm taking about levels of personal freedom and choice Again there are exceptions

Love these videos So Nice and funny at the same time to see how you reacted to so much in there Great video. Maybe come to Crown heights Right In Brooklyn Right near park slope where you have so much and the famous 770 Eastern Parkway headquters of Lubavitch. We recently actually had a few people come here and pretty open community.

After seeing the video, must admit that I got a bit curious and have cautiously driven around this area with my family. Hope to take my daughter to that bakery and make some friends one day. Completely agree with the comment that at the end of the day, most people want to just pay their bills and enjoy the life. My best wishes to this community.
