I have a 2007 6.0 with 250k, stock head gaskets. Runs great. I've hauled many times up to the max GCWR (23,500) and Trailer tow rating (15,500) no issues, pulls great. The owner of a 6.0 has to really care and understand how the engine works and what to look out for.
@ericjensen17404 жыл бұрын
I’m not paying $80k for a smog choked modern diesel. So old diesels are the way I’m going. I can buy an old 6.0, put a new motor in it, maintain it, and be perfectly happy. And still have $50k to $60k in my pocket. And I won’t care if I get a scratch on it.
@dante04srt4 жыл бұрын
Oh, you'll have more initially. But by the time you paid to fix the thing over and over and over again, it makes the cost of ownership versus new not such a big spread. If you really want a good diesel, find a Super Duty with a blown engine, buy it, and swap in a Cummins. Then you have the best platform, and the best engine, all in one package.
@Jobro_Ya_Know4 жыл бұрын
@@johnanderson2451 they can pull. We pulled with a 6.0 for 10 years. A good mechanic and a little bit of work they will run strong. Sold the 6.0 without any issues and bought a low mileage 7.3. Never had any issues and will buy another 6.0 eventually

Exactly what I have been thinking
@dante04srt3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hear people say that all the time come up but I don't really buy it. The studs on a 6.0 simply aren't effective because there aren't enough of them to provide adequate clamping force of the cylinder head. Even running fire Rings, the weak link is still the ability to clamp down. Four studs just isn't enough.
@dante04srt3 жыл бұрын
@Supercreech if you have to fire ring a block/head and switch to studs just to use the truck for how it was intended to be used, the engine is junk. Any HD diesel engine should be able to be used the way the engineers intended without this kind of modification. My point remains the same - 4 studs doesn't provide enough clamping force.

Great trucks for pulling. I just got my 3rd 2006 6.0L. The first one I went through the engine, put air bags and a gooseneck hitch in it. Pulled loads up to 26K plus no problems It was stolen 2 times before I never saw it again. Second is setup for plowing snow. At 191K miles the only thing wrong is the transfer case. I just got the third one to replace the stolen first one. Got a crew cab which is what I wanted with the first one which was a super cab. Just finished going through the engine with STC replacement, oil cooler, EGR cooler, New stainless up pipes, cleaned the turbo, checked the compression which was 16 psi difference between the high and low. After 18 years there have been some upgrades so it got the 08 fuel banjo fittings, blue spring, aluminum finned rear diff cover, 08 trans pan and filter, 2017 starter and some gauges. The first one would get 9.5 to 10.5 MPG at a gross weight of 20K or over and 15-16 empty coming back. With the 38 gal main tank and a 100 gal transfer tank in the bed under load I could make a 1150 mile trip and stop where I wanted to stop and fuel where the best price was and still have fuel to turn around some. 3.73 ratio helped some, never had a lack of power. At those weights only a fool goes fast with 20-30 feet of trailer behind them. Wouldn't own anything else. Easy to work on the bit parts are not any worse than any other engine. Shell Rotella T6 oil and donaldson or wix filters kept her running. Great trucks.

Bulletproofed mine (2005 Lariat dually 4WD Crewcab) at 38,000 after blown head gaskets…had to put a higher output alternator on it after batteries and FICM failed repeatedly, and circuit board died (Nations sells great units); all electrical issues instantly disappeared. At 100,000 I did a complete cooling system upgrade w/Bulletproof Diesel’s package and added a tuner. Added Banks monster exhaust. Upgraded the factory turbo and intake, added a coolant filtering system. Redid ball joints, new upgraded steering box. Stay on top of maintenance, use Rotella T-6 full synthetic and Archoil friction reducer at every oil change, and Archoil fuel additive at every fill-up. At 110,000 miles, the truck runs and handles better than when I got it new. Have likely put close to $20 k in it, but it’s paid for and I can take it anywhere and tow what I need to. It only took me twenty years to get my truck the way I wanted it.

The truck was an oilfield truck in northern Alberta for many years.(went through a fair amount of abuse). My partner went same truck configuration but a dodge Cummins. I changed a drag link and an alternator. That is it! He was doing his front end every 60k. And that Cummins, that I believed in, is toast! And my 6.0 is still going strong. Hand to god. Learn about your 6.0(second gen, 05 or later)and how to take care of it and maintain it properly. It is actually a pretty good option considering that the chassis and transmission it sits in is excellent! But buying used is a huge gamble I know. I ran the dodge Cummins. With enough work and money anything can be good. If I spend 70k 80k for a brand new truck in 2004 and a couple years later while still making payments have to spend 10 to 15 grand on just the motor alone thats a fucking piss off. I love the 6.0 performance I've owned one but I spend 5k on mine after most of the work was done and had a blast until the hpop went on it. Over complicated shit. My cummins is simple and it works. The trans lasted 412k rebuilt it for 3500 bucks and its good for another 400k. Motor has worked perfected other than the vp44 but upgraded pump and shes better

U say your "6.0 wasn't that bad?" Well that's a ringing endorsement of a truck lol my old truck is a great truck so reliable from factory never left me setting the 6.0s are awesome power wise but they have so many problems! To many good video brother

Looking at an 06 F350 6.0 with 199k miles. They are asking 21k for it. It has 20k in upgrades including Bulletproofing.

It’s very very very painful.. if you need a RELIABLE motor without dumping tons of money into it stay away from the 6.0 With that being said if you’re heavy on maintenance then it’ll be okay but at the end of the day it’s a 6.0 I never trusted mine to go on a long drive..
