I picked an 06 up here a couple months back for $2500 from some meth head. Paperwork was in order. Needed a #8 Injector and Oil Cooler (Leaking) and the guy did an EGR bypass without a tune, so it was "Under powered". About an hour of wrenching later and the thing runs great for what I need it for. Interior is great other than a rip on the driver's seat. Price made it a no brainer.

I am going to look at a 2004 F-250 Lariat soon. It’s a 6.0, egr delete, newer HPOP. Only 183000km and same owner for the past 20 years. Looks fairly untouched. Owner has never had many issues other than hpop. I’m hoping it goes well, it’s a nice rig.

I wish I had seen this before I bought my 6.0. It was bullet proofed but lot’s of extra wiring. Very clean interior. You gave me some things to look for. I really like the truck but it has become a project. Thank you for your down to earth way of explaining things and the fact that you can explain it without a bunch of expletives. My Grand kinds can be in the room when you are talking. Good job.

Just looking at your garage & yard tells me a lot. Subscribed due to content & easy to understand information. No fluff, loud music. Honest information from a gear head like me (was, old fart now). Looking at an 03 F-350 6.0 to haul a slide in camper. Seems I have a stigma on the 6.0. The one I looked at has 130k. Stock (no studs). Alliant injectors & controller. Looks to be an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator. No leaks, just some normal seepage. Trans oil clean, NO blow-by, no smoke from exhaust, coolant clean as is tank (no overflow) does have a system monitor/tuner (Edge Evolution) on the pillar. 500# oil system whoa, glad you mentioned that. Still debating, truck was a trade in, little in the way of maintenance records. Appreciate your channel & information. Mom always said, "shut up and listen" learn from others who know. Take care Bro. Good luck on channel!

That main wiring harness holder that directs the harness away from the turbo more than a asthetic piece. It is a necessary piece to keep the wiring harness from melting. If it is broken, or the clips that hold it are broken, it can hang down and subject the wiring to heat from turbo.

Another reason to inspect cold would be to check coolant condition. I was unfortunate enough to meet the guy at a public location. Which on the surface made sense but since the truck was warm I couldn't open the degas bottle where I would have seen there was diesel in the coolant. I discovered it a couple weeks later and that was caused by cracked heads. So needed new heads bam right if the bat😔

Great info my man! I’m thinking of considering a 6.0 as I’m in love with how they sound(running properly of course 😁). I had ‘01 F250 CC 7.3 back in ‘08 that I converted to a dually and absolutely loved that engine and truck. I feel confident I can find a good truck that has been maintained properly but extremely using these techniques you mentioned to be comprehensive when my time comes to purchasing one. Great video and keep on truckin 😃

Not a strangers car if they are trying to sell it. little different if you just walked up to some random person. But doing checks on a vehicle is a must especially if you plan to spend 15k plus on a clean truck. When you show up to "look over" explain that you plan on doing multiple checks. Like he said in the video, if the seller tries avoid questions or try to deter you from doing things then they are possibly hiding problems.

Idk about it not being fast, I havent tested a bunch of diesels but my dad had a dump truck 6.0 it would always break down bc of the stupid egr problems but when that thing ran omg, it drove the same when it was full of gravel as when it was empty. It didn’t even feel the weight. It’s been so many years and I still want one. I have new diesels now, Duramax but I’m definitely gonna pull the trigger on a 6.0 and bulletproof it and pray for the best

well said...... I got a 2005 Harley davidson edition as well (same color) but its had everything under the sun done aftermarket on the powertrain...... everything else other than engine and tranmission is OEM......... Air to Oil cooler is a must and would be the first mod i would do to any of these trucks. or preferably bullet proof diesel Oil cooler delete plate. which involves a remote traditional oil filter housing. and a Air to Oil cooler. also makes accessing other topside engine componets a breeze.

Nice video, Wyatt! Personally, I pay attention to the transmission fluid as well, also I look at the tires for indicators of abnormal wear and abuse. I recently bought a 2004 F-350 crew cab short bed 4x4 6.0 powerstroke truck with 156,xxx miles on it. The truck is solid but it has engine problems, so I picked up an extra engine from a local guy who parted out another 2004 with 144,xxx miles on it, good running engine. My plans are to go through the engine and replace the lifters, water pump, HPOP, heads, reseal the engine all the way, new injectors, bulletproof EGR cooler, new oil cooler. I know that it’s going to cost me some money to get it all ready for the swap, but I don’t want it to have issues when I put the engine in.

@franciscomorales883 if you have access to a scanner, scan for codes, check voltages and syncs. Any extra wiring, or just check to see if anything looks out of place. That's where I'd start. Take it on a long drive to get it up to temp, shut it off and see if it will restart hot. There is a lot of tests that you can do. Use the wire on passenger side to turn tue motor over to listen for compression, check all fluids and find out when they were changed, how well it has been maintained.

Would be extremely helpful if you would show the item your speaking of rather than assume everyone knows the components. You speak of the 5 main failure points but don't say what they are? In future vids, please show item your speaking of, even though motor is antique by many standards, lots of folks are totally new to the diesel world as you say. Use stock photos off internet if you can't show it on your truck, the end product would be much more educational. Just my 2 cents as a fellow new KZbinr. 6.4 is the first common rail powerstroke. more emissions but more power but comes with more headaches. 6.0 is great but also has alot of its own issues. Whether a 6.0 or 6.4. Maintaining them properly is hard on the wallet. And quite time consuming. If you don't keep up with maintenance, it can cost you alot more in repairs down the road. The 6.0 is a little more complicated of an injection system, but with time you learn. They are both great but they both require alot of time, money and work to keep running properly without the anxiety

7.3s at a tad bit more & there’s a reason for it. 7.3s are much better of a motor, & if u get a good one don’t cheap out. Put $ into it to get it right. Don’t mess up another 7.3. Most 7.3s are almost 20-25yrs old. If u get an IDI you’ll basically need to rebuild the thing cuz they’re all abt 30yrs old. Or just get a v10 gasser & save the pain & headache for a new motor. If u have to replace the HPOP on a 6.0 you can afford a new V10 motor.
