The TRUTH about PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK
ARE PLITVICE LAKES WORTH IT?
After exploring Krka National Park: • KRKA NATIONAL PARK, CR... the day before, we decided not to drive back to our Airbnb in Dubrovnik but to instead carry on driving North and book a last minute stay in Kapela Korenička so that we could explore Plitvice National Park.
We woke up early so we could arrive as soon as the park opened but we hadn’t planned on the temperature being so much cooler than Dubrovnik so we only had our summer clothes with us which was super chilly early at the start.
We spent the morning exploring the Upper lakes of Plitvice National Park before crossing the Kozjak Lake by boat to explore the lower lakes section. Both are incredibly beautiful but we definitely preferred the lower section as there’s more of a rugged terrain with azure waters and waterfalls everywhere you look, this area is smaller though so if you visit during high season the lower lakes might be quite crowded, we visited in autumn so the crowds weren’t too bad.
We highly recommend adding this place to your itinerary if you’re visiting Croatia, it’s a great day out in nature (or half day if you want to just do one section) but we did find it to be almost twice as busy as Krka National Park was when we visited the day before.
We managed to make the five hour drive back to Dubrovnik that afternoon/evening, arriving just in time to head out into Dubrovnik old town for drinks - long day but so much fun!

Stayed there in the early mid 1980’s on a two centre Yugotours holiday this video makes me want to revisit. We had a fabulous time great memories of the train which was like a kids ride back then & all electric because they didn’t allow combustion engines back then. Great video I wish we had GoPro’s back then!

I thought Veliki Prstavac waterfall was fab & the turqiouse of the lakes incredibley beautiful. Wow, this is a beautiful park! Nicely setup as well and looks well taken care of. So nice that the transport within the park is included in the ticket price...even a boat! So cool! I hate when I'm not prepared for the weather - and it's happened too many times before when we try to be spontaneous. This park is so beautiful! I love the waterfalls and the walkways and bridges over them. It's so nice that all of the transportation within the park is included - otherwise it would take a long time to get around! Love your TKT tips. The last few shots of the waterfalls were just amazing!!

Considering that we are both around 60, I hope it won't be a challenge to walk around. We are quite fit and walk regularly, but I was wondering if there are many steps to climb. Thank you so much, you should be fine as there are different options that you can choose on the day based on how much you want to walk. It’s not too strenuous, there’s a few steps here and there but it’s nothing our parents (who are in their 60s) couldn’t do.

@@TideKnotTravellers Yes, the K route takes about 6 hours and I believe we did get to see a few more falls, but also there was more water when we were there. So we probably saw the same things just with more water. We definitely liked Plitvice more!

Pity you didn't stop in one of the other cities closer to the Plitvice Lakes ie Split , Sibenik or Zadar. It's a lot easier to split your trip and fly out of Split

If you only had time to do Krka National Park or Plitvice National Park, which one would you choose?

great question, it would depend on a few things. If you have your own transport then probably Krka because it is spread out into different sections but so many different things to see and is generally quieter than Plitvice so time of year would influence the choice too. However if you are relying on a bus then probably Plitvice is good because you arrive at the park and stay there all day without needing transport. Both places are beautiful so whichever you choose you'll have a lovely time!
