Oh River you nailed it ❤ I met Princess Alexandra back in the 60s when I was just a little girl. My Dad took me to the Motor Show at Earls Court and I shook her hand. She asked me my name and her eyes lit up when I said Marina. With great proudness, she told me her mother and daughter were also named Marina. I will never forget how soft her hand was 😀 Harry take note! This elderly lady has experienced being on the receiving end of a ‘tell all daughter’ . She carried herself with dignity throughout those troubling times and remained loyal to the monarchy. Such a class act and what a genius seating arrangement. 👍 💯

Princess Alexandra was 6th in line to the throne when she was born-200 million ppl worldwide watching in 1963 is equivalent to 509 million today. She was to Queen Elizabeth what Beatrice, Eugenie, Zara, Peter, Lady Louise & Earl Wessex are to William & Harry. Time & space had her labeled a “random old lady” but Princess Alexandra was hardly that.

Regarding Princess Alexandra 's reaction to her daughter's pregnancy- considering the time, it was a normal reaction. I was unmarried and pregnant in 1978 ( never done in our family) my poor father had an absolute fit - my mother was surprisingly supportive ( which I thought would be the otherway round). In the end my father informed me it was up to me to tell my grandmother. Grandma also had my back after talking it over with her priest. I had my baby boy without being shunned by the family and married the father 3 years later ( also giving my father fits). We are still married after all this time.

As (now an old lady myself!) I was named after Princess A, she figured highly in my childhood, rather like a beautiful fairy princess! She was SO uniquely beautiful and classy! But I never knew most of what you've told us here, so thank you so much dear River, for such an interesting bio of her! Maybe I was too young to take it in, though scandals weren't splashed all over the papers back then, there was way too much respect! This was a time when not only did the entire cinema audience stand for the anthem always played after the film...but people also stood up in their homes, when it was played!! Can you imagine!! Anyway, this is my first 'River visit', and I enjoyed it immensely! x

You, my dear River, brought tears to my eyes sharing the history of what sounds like a Princess of dignity, loyalty, grace in action, and love of Queen, The Monarchy, country, and family today. I've watched every single broadcast you've done and this one is by far and away one of the most moving yet. Thank you! 💜 The gifts of family, relationships, and service H is allowing to pass him by is truly sad to see. The love shown to him by his family, despite his betrayal, he currently seems too blind to see. The utter brilliance of the family in the way they're attempting to show H love in action is the kind of love many of us have and others can only wish to have. Long live the King!

Too bad Queen Mary isn't still around. She suffered no fools, she kicked Edward and Wallis to the curb, as she knew Edward was a threat to Bertie's reign. Privately, I'm sure she stayed in touch and loved Edward, but I'm sure she saw him as Harry is seen today. She understood King and country came first, because she lived in a time where that was threatened by war and many of her family members had to absent their thrones and take refuge in England to survive. Some were lucky enough to return to their thrones, but some not. The execution of the Tsar and Alexandria was an eye opener.

That was a trip down memory lane. I think I even remember that cover of Hello magazine featuring Marina. Her son’s name was so unusual that it stuck in my mind. I was a bit unusual in my teenage friendship group that I followed all the goings on of not just our Royal family but the European ones too. A certain Spanish then Prince, now King was always easy on the eye. It is strange that we say the end of the era of deference, when in certain areas it could be pushed as far as the end of the era of respectability. I was born in the mid 70s, lower middle class at best, with no real expectation of meeting anyone from higher echelons of society and yet my Mum believed it was important that I knew how to address anyone from Royalty, senior clergy and the nobility. There was a time of recognition across the board and a proud working glass. Now in the woke world it seems so many of the people trying to pull down society are ones that are placed very comfortably within it, a liberal elite.

Trivia - I remember spending a whole afternoon as a nine-year-old, pouring through a glossy magazine featuring the wedding of Princess Alexandra and Angus Ogilvy while we were visiting a friend of my mother’s. I think they must have spent at least part of their honeymoon at Balmoral, as their royal car passed by the bottom of the same friend’s front garden (on their way to the airport) a few weeks later. We ran out to wave to the couple but only caught a brief glimpse of them. I’ve always thought of Princess Alexandra as one of the most elegant royals, even better-looking in older age (and I do remember the scandal around her daughter, Marina (one of King Charles’s god-daughters, I think), but as she was a minor royal, the story didn’t dominate the headlines for long. I seem to remember an image of her on the front page of a magazine, dressed in black rubber with a crown and corgis😳. Looking forward to listening to this episode properly with a coffee later today. I, too, only discovered River’s YT videos recently🙂.

With any luck the Court will throw out Harry's case but to be honest I would like to see him on the witness stand being chewed up and spat out by the defendant's barristers. He needs to learn a lesson.

She also thought Harry had tons of money at his disposal. Wrong!! He had to ask for money, she over spent her wardrobe budget by a lot and wanted more, RF said she should go back to acting .. this is why she turned.. then she had Harry Begging for money from Charles, he quit taking his calls, then he asked the Queen, after that, he was not permitted to be with the Queen alone. Charles helped them out a lot, but then said I am not the bank.

Growing up, I was a tomboy with more spirit than was advisable and Princess Alexandra was always a favourite because I identified with her personality. Watching her televised wedding as a kid, I even told myself the dashing Angus was exactly what I would look for in a husband! You have a knack of bringing history to life and have reminded me of many happy, if naughty times but mostly, what a brilliant comparison and moral story you tell. Somehow, I doubt Harry has the intellect to see it!

There’s always a way to end a friendship, relationship, or association - politely, without ghosting, rudeness, or leaving the other person feeling unsure or bewildered. Sadly, based on what other people have said, nutmeg hasn’t figured that out. The person who really suffers as a result of this is nutmeg herself as the lack of growth, maturity, and depth - routinely comes back to haunt her.

Before even watching, I felt badly for Princess Alexandra, Harry totally ignored her and showed her no respect. She looked fabulous with no headdress. She is always wearing a hat in public, and it was wonderful to see her lovely silver hair. She required no headdress, her hair is so lovely! Edit: Did you also see the face Harry pulled when the Gloucesters were taking their seats? I hope Prince Richard shot Harry a look of disdain!

Virginia McKenna is a name people don't often speak of these days but she was one of the 1950s great British beauties - starring in Carve Her Name With Pride about SOE operative Violette Szabo, and later Born Free. She and Bill Travers, her husband and co-star in Born Free then left acting to devote their entire lives to saving wildlife - and their son has inherited that same devotion. She deserves her honour as much, if not more than almost anyone else, in my view.

Loved the information about Princess Alexandra. As an 85 year old American, I grew up reading about the Royal Family in Life magazine and other publications. I am an admirer of all members of the Family and believe PH will one day regret the way he not only mistreated his grandparents in their final years but also the rest of his family members. After his wife moves on, perhaps he will come to them hat in hand, asking for forgiveness. Will it be too late? I wonder.

Princess Alexandra came to Australia once at least. We were youngsters at this time. She was such fun. I remember her dressed in a yellow dress, she just looked like sunshine. One time, she was standing up in an open carriage and accidentally sat down on the Governor General’s top hat, ruining it. She stood straight up again holding the flattened hat aloft and laughing as was the Governor General . The next day she replaced the hat. I called my new yellow budgie Alex

I think we should bring back single mothers homes, but this time as a respite for ladies who might otherwise abort. They can live there with their baby , until they finish their education or get stable, years if necessary, with 'unlimited' childcare as required. Would provide a haven for those without a stable, helpful family and prevent some abortions. We need young people to be born ❤

Thank you for the information about Alexandra. The royal links are surprising. I’m in Sydney and live in an apartment complex built for war widows. Princess Marina was the patron of our gardens, which are still very beautiful and well kept. She held the patronage of the War Widows Guild of Australia, so the apartment complex bears her name. The widows have since departed and the apartments sold privately, but the gardens still bear the name of Princess Marina. It’s lovely to be so far from UK but have that royal link.

Growing up in the US, I did not see coverage of her on trips to Canada or Australia, but I did see stories about her coming from the Caribbean and Africa. I think this shows the enormous regard the late queen had for her cousin.

How refreshing to listen to a well researched history piece on Princess Alexandra. In relation to Royals you say Couruscation would be preferable to colour, yes and it always was and shown to effect in KCIII coronation. I remember well the visit of Princess Alexandra to Australia in 1960 and how well she was greeted by the press and public for her down-to-earth approach to her service and duties. In the town of Toowoomba in Queensland she attended a ball where the local dignitaries excelled themselves in bringing all the best people dressed in their finery. The windows of the hall were not that far above pavement level; certainly low enough so that young athletic people could stand on shoulders to look in. The lights were blazing and Alexandra had no difficulty on a turn around the ballroom in spotting the large array of faces outside pressed against the windows. At which she is alleged to have remarked inconsequentially “ who are all those people? Are they bodgies?” I guess this was in reference to a youth problem in the UK. But at the time I don’t think there was any scale to this sort of problem in Toowoomba. The local populace were I think at best bemused. Photos of her at the ball were splashed readily through the Toowoomba Chronicle the next day. So that it was an event fondly remembered for a long time.
