Sevyn Streeter is an American R&B singer, songwriter, and performer. Sevyn Streeter started singing to two girl groups: TG4 and Richgirl. Sevyn branched off into solo endeavors and collaborated with Chris Brown. Sevyn had music hits like "It Won't Stop", "nEXT", "Don't K**l the Fun", and "Before I Do."
Sevyn also wrote songs for Chris Brown, Alicia Keys, Tamar Braxton, Justin Bieber, and Brandy. The biggest song she penned was Ariana Grande's song "The Way."
With Sevyn's success, came a lot of obstacles. I discuss it in detail in this video.

not so sure about that.... i actually think she was too young to show off her body as much. i think she has waaayyy too many sexual vids for her age at the time. Im not sure if working with CB at that time helped her. that album cover was insane with the straight jacket and lingerie. the second album was not as good. the second album with all that ass out... she was really young. colorism was an issue for sure... but she was doing a lot

If this was the 90s Sevyn would have been big back when you had black music executives. Like Ashanti, Mya, and Mila J, imho, Sevyn should go the independent route and still do songwriting. As Diddy said before we need more black music executives, therefore true artists would get the recognition they deserve.

@ThotKilla people still check for the VMAs? I thought the virtue signalling politics on display made them tired to the public. Also, from his Wiki, "Mendes went on to release an EP in July 2014 and his debut studio album Handwritten (2015), whose single "Stitches" reached the top 10 in the United States and Canada, and number one in the United Kingdom. His second album Illuminate (2016) was supported by the singles "Treat You Better" and "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back", which reached the top 10 in several countries. His self-titled third studio album was released in 2018. All three albums debuted atop of the US Billboard 200, with the first one making Mendes one of five artists to ever debut at number one before the age of eighteen. Mendes has headlined three concert tours: ShawnsFirstHeadlines, Shawn Mendes World Tour and Illuminate World Tour. In 2018, Mendes was included on Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Mendes also became the first artist to land four number ones on the Adult Top 40 chart before age 20. Among his accolades, Mendes has won an American Music Awardand three Juno Awards." He's not becoming irrelevant over one forgettable (or maybe just shunted aside) performance. Y'all have GOT to remember these artists are human, and moreover don't have to do things YOUR way. After all, who are you?

@@Maddygurl12304996 R&B artists are not getting their due because labels don't want to invest in the genre. Yall need to sign to labels focused on hip and R&B. Not these huge labels with 10 thousand artists and they only promote 3. Thats the underlying issue to me. I know first hand, constantly being told in singing auditions that I just don't have the look, when I know damn well that I have the talent!!! gospelevans that not true Patti didn’t have a hard time peaking in the top 5 songs except LM with Labelle in her younger years, she had to go overseas to make a name for herself and do rock and roll. If you look at her songs with Labelle or even the Bluebells, she didn’t have hits till really the 80s, and didn’t win a Grammy til I believe the late 80s or early 90s

If we want to see her or any other artists like her return to the spotlight, all we have to do is BUY their music from ITunes or Google Play Music, etc. We must FINANCIALLY support every artist that we want to see more of instead of just asking for their return because the industry only responds to views, streams, what's trending, and of course, SELLS💰💰💰 So buy her music again and again, because they only respect the numbers, they're in (the music) business to make money, not to have us just admire their artist without being reimbursed for their advertising money spent to put her on tv, etc. These companies MUST get their investment money that they've spent promoting an artist back or they'll cancel that artist because we're not BUYING their music 90% of the time. So basically, we have to put our money where our mouth is!💯

I remember a interview where a music exec said that he had a girl group that was ready and talented but held them back a year because the music public was not ready for a girl group....You would think any good and talented group would shine anytime? music fans are not honest or real a lot of the times, we do play a part of the foolishness in the music world.

Colorism is very real. There’s always discrimination against pretty brown and dark skin women because we have the ability beauty wise to compete against the standard and no one wants the standard to be tested. All the brown and dark skin girls that face discrimination are always attractive and better looking than the lighter and non Black women. They industry has no problem with dark skin women who can’t compete per se beauty wise (Gabourey Sidibe) but there’s a reason Kelly Rowland and women like seven didn’t pop off and it has nothing to do with lack of talent. People don’t want that type of beauty to be the new standard. Great video as always.

I think to go independent is very hard because you have to do and pay for everything yourself on top of making top quality music. On top of that you're having to compete with the major labels who have all the money and the connections to the top radio stations and have the power to block artists from being played on the radio. In theory it sounds great and in a perfect world I'd love that but black people we have no real power in this thing called music.

I understand that there are many who want to be in the spotlight. But we should all know by now that the money is behind the scenes, especially in music. I feel like black people have been conditioned to be the entertainer, not realizing how much more money is made offstage. Dolly Parton always talked about how “I Will Always Love You” made her a lot of money once Whitney covered it. Sevyn should stick to writing/producing and charge major $$$ for her work. A good song is hard to come by these days. She has the ultimate gift, writing.

Olivia Ma'am I agree. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be a star. However, sometimes what you want is not what you’re called to be. On the other hand, if she really wants to be a star, it may be time for her to grind, AGAIN, and not wait for her label to support her. I don’t know what these label contracts consists of, but it seems like artists just sit in “confinement” until they are dropped. As far as Sevyn, I’m sure she can still reach out to Chris Brown for assistance. She just needs to build a strategy and reasonable execution plan, if becoming a star is her goal.

I felt like her 2 EPs "Call Me Crazy, But..." and "Shoulda Been There" before the album, 'Girl Disrupted', were Amazing, but her debut album was meh to me, and I feel bad because I love her and it hurts me to say that. There were a few tracks I loved on the album, but meh... It just didn't seem strong as her EPs. I felt like there were too many samples. It didn't seem original and creative like her EPs. She's a REALLY talented artist. She can SANG, Dance, and write her behind off. She's pretty, has a great spirit about her, and she has a great personality. I'm looking forward to her upcoming projects, and I hope she continues making projects and just doesn't settle for the behind the scenes money because I know that's great financially, but in her heart, I know she's an artist and it feeds her soul.

Sir. Dave i agree with all of this, I felt exactly the same about it way too many samples I expected more from the album especially since ‘before I do’ was such a strong single

I agree! They sounded like great demo songs for other artist and I think because she’s so accustomed to doing that she doesn’t know how to really PULL.

One thing I love about the Empressive channel and these music documentaries is that it introduces me to good music I didn't know about before watching. Thank you, Empressive. Sevyn Streeter is really good. I'm with on the jamming.
