*The one thing I liked about James Gunn’s DC pitch* was that he mentioned how creatives come in talking about “I wanna do something ambitious” then the end product is something so “safe” you can tell the studio meddled with everything… so to see that he’s focusing on the more introspective comics as reference - - is as ambitious as it gets - fills me with hope that this DCU will go crazy.

My biggest issue with superhero movies at the moment is that they’re more focused on the wider story rather than the characters. I loved the Netflix shows because they didn’t feel like they were building towards anything. Sure, they were working towards The Hand, but even still they focused more on the characters. The Batman… built towards NOTHING. Just hinted at some stuff to come. Absolutely fantastic movie. The winter soldier, while still building towards the bigger story, focused more on characters, and that movie was at the top of my MCU ranking for a while

I think there's a certain critical mass to even a successful interconnected universe. After which you're just juggling too much stuff and those serendipitous team ups no longer give the fans a dopamine rush. As much as KZbin seems to be losing its mind about Super Hero fatigue. That tends to be what happens with Fads. They run for about a decade, getting bigger and bigger, until they eventually flame out and begin to decline, limping along until something else displaces them. That 's not to say Super Hero movies will disappear. They'll just hopefully return to being one genre among many.

If those movies flop it’s not because they’re superhero movies, but rather bad movies. Superhero fatigue isn’t a thing, just like anime fatigue isn’t a thing; people will always rush to the theaters to see these kinds of movies because the market is so large for them. People are still excited for the next The Batman movie, the next Avengers film, Sony SpiderVerse, the new James Gunn DCU slate, Deadpool 3 etc… and people will go see them. The fatigue is in the quality of the movies, not the genre of movie. If all the MCU Phase 4 movies were actually good and well made (encouraging more people to see them and thus making better box offices), ‘superhero fatigue’ would be out of the picture.

In my experience and in my case, it's not superhero fatigue, badmovie fatigue or even MCU fatigue, it's just movie fatigue. I think this is what some, not all, people have and don't even realize it. Think about it, for most of our history we never consumed as much media as we do now. Consuming media was (mostly) restricted to shows with certain times you could watch it at and theaters before it goes into DVDs and all of sudden we don't have that anymore. We have so much content that we can't keep up with, everyone is always watching a new movie or a new series and catching up with anything that came before. Everyone has watched everything and somehow the people making movies and shows have to create something new? This is just my opinion and my experience.

James Gunn said it best when talking about the idea of superhero fatigue. He said the problem doesn't lie within the genre itself it just lies with how it's presented. people aren't tired of superhero movies they're just tired of movies that have poor lackluster plots. Quality beats quantity every single time. That's why a lot of people unsubscribed to the MCU and started to tune in to more indie superhero comic book related projects like Invincible, The Umbrella Academy and The Boys. those projects have consistant writers that 1.)Understand what type of context they're putting out. and 2.) Put more effort into story and character depth before "the message" in order to provoke positive responses from the vast majority of their audience.

There’s a reason why the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films are still, to this day, the best superhero films ever made and that’s because they’re not even superhero films. They’re life lessons disguised as superhero films and that’s why they’re so impactful even after all this time. Marvel movies lack passion, they don’t bother connecting with audiences anymore, they’re just made to carry the plot forward and lead into the next huge crossover. I think what’s missing in all the marvel movies is showing how these superheroes uplift and inspire the people around them. My favorite scenes in the Raimi films are the ones where the citizens of New York stand up to the villains to back Parker up (bridge scene in 1 and train scene in 2) and we just don’t see that kind of storytelling in Marvel today.

Well, without getting into "that" area of conversation, I think one valid point you can raise is this: Has there or has there not been an uptick in marvel movies or shows that have been trying to portray a certain political or ideological message? Now, you can agree with this message or think that such a message is necessary. On the other hand, if you disagree with the message then you might want to blame what you think the message is trying to portray. For instance, if you agree or think that the MCU has been traditionally male-dominated and that the women haven't bene portrayed as well as they could, then something like She-Hulk might be a bit of response to that whole discussion. Or, if you think that the MCU has been good or alright with female representation, then you might think that She-Hulk was trying to push a particular message. To steelman the argument a bit, if you agree that there has been an uptick in some sort of messaging, then it's understandable why a certain group of people might be reacting to certain things (whether it's justified or not).

I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on the Zelda series, especially with Tears of the Kingdom about to drop and already being a very, very big deal. I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for anything in my entire life, and that’s saying something considering we got Infinity War, Endgame, The Batman, the entire MCU Spidey trilogy, and so many other outstanding projects in recent years. More TV show content would be a welcome addition too!

I think your right with people not feeling superhero fatigue, but people being tired of bad movies. I think Marvel Studios thought it was impenetrable and could just churn out mediocre stuff and everything would be fine. Turns out that didn’t happen. I just hope marvel starts making good superhero movies again!

Western superheroes may be oversaturated, but there’s a lot of international hero stories yet to be popularized. Kamen Rider is probably the best example of a long, superhero franchise that has managed to stay fresh for about as long as Spider-Man and the Avengers have. I would suggest checking out any Kamen Rider show.

I don't have a fatigue for superheroes, BUT I do have a fatigue for Disney+ Marvel shows that always feel like they fall short in being tv shows due to the mini series format. I loved Moon Knight ...... The last episode shows the biggest problem of Disney+ mini series's. And the fact they had to cut down on a whole fight scene that was recorded. Stunts with the actual actors being removed. I'm kinda just tired of the high budget cinema aesthetic holding back superhero shows from being shows. (and it applies to star wars live action shows as well)

"It's not super hero fatigue, it's bad movie fatigue" Hollywood follows "fads" because they make mediocre films lucrative Superhero fatigue happened, because the "geek fad" is over, (Example: There was this moment where people paid a subscription to receive random merchandising), You can't just produce bland shit and expected to make millions anymore just because it's SpeedBall™ from Marvel™

The problem isn’t about the superheroes themselves, it’s about the filmmaking. When you get these factory processed movies that have no energy or flavor in the style, people are bound to get sick of them. People like these movies when they have a strong vision; look at the best comic book movies, like Spider Verse, Logan, etc; they all have a style and vision to them that people respond to.

Difference between superhero movies and Westerns is that Westerns were pretty cheap to make, letting studios push out a HUGE amount of Western movies and TV shows. Superhero movies may have dominated box offices and pop cultural discussions for a while, but the cost of all those visual effects means there's never been THAT many of them coming out each year.

I think the next boom will be animation because the technology is improving continuously and different styles are beginning to surface, eg. Puss in boots had a very unique animation style that made it look almost hand painted, not to mention the Spider-man into the spider verse unique comic book looking approach. The trailer to its sequel shows how the spider verse will incorporate many different artistic animation styles going forward, and as tech improves animation will have close to unlimited potential and I for one can't wait!!

2023 looks to be a good year for movies, Super Hero movies too in fact. Apart from Ant-Man and Shazam of course. GOTG3, Rise of the Beasts (I don't think it counts as a super hero movie but whatever, I'm counting it) Blue Beetle and Spider Verse 2 all look to be very promising and hopefully we can ditch Marvel's ridiculous strain on director freedom and get some real director driven Super Hero movies, because when they're done, they really really work.

The key is not making a “safe” film. Weather it’s on the director level or the studio level. They need to practice making films that aren’t painfully average, and as an audience we need to practice weeding out what deserves to be watched and what’s a cash grab

While Superhero comics over the years have taken more risks, the movies are safer than ever. They are the lowest effort product. I don't think it's because they don't know how but because they know how much they can get away with on the brand name alone. EEATO is a superhero movie or at least what they should be.

When it comes to the MCU, the biggest thing people are really burned out on is the “movie homework” approach that nearly this whole phase has felt like. Look at which ones have been most well liked, most successful… and they’re the ones that actually best work as individual MOVIES. Even the latest Spider-Man, funny enough, because even though that movie is heavily reliant on tying together three different series of Spider-Man (and fitting into the MCU at the same time) it’s not assigning you homework, or feeling like the culmination of all the homework you did. It’s just a well done movie, and an actual, heartfelt, dare I say meaningful story that feels like the natural result of these three different Spider-Man continuities clashing together. It was a movie worth watching on its own merits.
