He knows how to make superhero films not seem too good to explore the purely fun and emotional aspects of superheroes.

Your experience walking into Guardians 3 was really close to mine. I think James Gunn has the amazing skill to take a character who feels hopeless and turn them hopeful. He does with his characters and in turn does it with his audience. I feel like compassion, love, and hope are things missing in most superhero media today, but those are the things that always pulled me in. It's those qualities which make me believe that I can be a better person. And that's what makes me so excited that James is directing Superman: Legacy. I feel like we need a Superman who is afraid of himself. Superman is an absolute powerhouse with a near infinite amount of strength, heightened senses, and abilities that at face value could kill anyone. Laser vision cuts nearly anything in its way and freeze breath is well freeze breath. So I feel like we need to understand how much Superman is holding himself back whenever he’s doing anything so when he saves someone with his full strength we can be thankful he’s on our side and he can be happy that his powers can be used to help people more than they hurt people, and when he’s forced to be more violent he’s a little sad that he has to hurt a human in order for the violence to stop. This can be juxtaposed when he goes up against people who are at the same level of strength as he is because his entire life he’s been a big fish in a small pond but when like say Zod, Doomsday, Brainiac or Darkseid show up they put him in his place because his godly strength barely hurts them because what he considers to be overkill they consider to be a light punch and I’m going to be honest I never really saw Superman as much of a combatant. I’m not saying he can’t throw a punch but he’s not a martial artist and he doesn’t have any form of formal training from what I can tell so when he goes up against someone with super strength who is also a trained warrior then the battles will seem more desperate. This would also make the Justice League feel even more special as now Superman would now be surrounded by people who are just as powerful as he is so he no longer feels alone especially if they decide to add Supergirl into the mix.

Rising above feeling worthless is something I too connected with heavy in the film. The theme of depression and worthlessness is also something I could’ve seen working stronger for M.O.D.O.K. in Quantumania as well. Constantly in that movie Kang basically belittles Darren and treats him as a lackey. I think that character could’ve worked much more better had in the movie had Kang mentally torture him. Telling him he’s worthless, his life has no meaning, and what has happened to him, happened because he deserved it. In the final showdown of the movie where they’re all facing Kang, the scene between Cassie and M.O.D.O.K. would’ve been a lot better. Had he would’ve told her when defeated in that scene after she punches him. That he’s worthless, he doesn’t deserve to live. After trying to destroy her life, her fathers life, and many others before; why should anyone like him ever to deserve to live for what he’s done. He tells her to kill him, but of course Cassie doesn’t; instead of telling him it’s never too late to not be dick (which I thought was a tad cringey) She could’ve told him: “No one is ever worthless. Not even you, it’s never too late to change who you are.” Then when his death happens in the scene where he attacks Kang, you could’ve had him tell Kang. “I AM NOT WORTHLESS!” That could’ve been a bit more hard hitting for the character, considering how much the movie wants to play on him as a joke. He could’ve been humorous but also understandable, relatable in a sense. He’s menacing too because of the hurt in his life that plagues him. Feeling depressed, bitter, and rage full after everything that’s happened in his life now, that could’ve been a nice way to wrap a bow on the character for the trilogy of Ant Man movies. For him to have that epiphany of releasing that even someone like him; with all the terrible things he may have committed in his life before, his life is not worthless. His sacrifice would’ve been a lot more better to me in that way. But of course they don’t try to think of anything too far like with the character because he needs to be silly. It is of course an Ant Man movie after all, and that’s a shame because that makes me even more sour that we didn’t get an Edgar Wright trilogy of Ant Man movies instead of Peyton Reed.

I love how you can see James Gunn change and improve with each Guardians film in some aspect, no other comic book trilogy to me has that whilst being so consistent, any one of them being someone's favorite I would understand. The first film was solid, it had a great emotional core and I really enjoy it. I don't love it as much as some people and the villain was one of the blandest the MCU has to offer, but he took note of that. Volume 2 upped the emotional stakes, brought in some darker aspects and had a great villain (The High Evolutionary was great but Ego on top of being to me the first truly hateable MCU villain was just a more interesting concept to me) but he went a bit overboard with the humor undercutting emotional moments, yet that's still the MCU film that probably resonates with me the most. Volume 3 just nailed all of it, the heart, the humor was handled perfectly and man did he go dark, like wow I was blown away in that regard. Those films by nature to me have more heart than The Suicide Squad, but that film is still my favorite of his films. It was everything I wanted it to be and then some, heck it got me to finally get into writing. I'll absolutely give whatever he does with DC a shot.

James Gunn is both extremely talented and extremely lucky- both studios, Marvel and DC, have a bad habit of limiting or railroading their creators down specific paths using specific styles- Gunn seems to have somehow sidestepped that. He’s a clear heart on his sleeve kinda fan, who has such obvious passion and love for every movie he makes, and he just got handed the most iconic superhero- probably most iconic character period- in history. You let a man who pours his soul into everything he does direct and write the superhero who is known for his soul and heart, and you’ve got the recipe for one of the best comic book movies ever made.

I know it's unlikely, but I feel that (according to a friend of mine) if James Gunn made the live action "Scooby-Doo" films, I think there should be a spin-off movie in the DCU about Mystery Inc. teaming up with any of the DC superheroes (or just the Justice League). Sure, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar don't want to reprise their roles as Fred and Daphne, but they can always be recast with some identical look-alikes. And it would've been the first time since "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed" where Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini portrayed Shaggy and Velma in live action.

I’ll say this maybe his non comic book movies aren’t always good, but he just understands everything about how a superhero movie should work, he always understands the characters at heart, and he never misses.

Superman: Legacy is right now my most hype live action superhero film because of my love for Superman at his most well written and after seeing Guardians 3 in how emotionally raw and human it was, to the point it's now my second favorite MCU movie, I have full faith in James in showcasing just how human Superman is too and how he still has a place in the modern day. The fact James has stated time and again how much it means to him to get Superman right in his movie, showing his sheer love and desire to do good for humanity, is alone already enough to sell me on this movie. Genuinely cannot come soon enough.

Still in the middle of watching but just wanted to stop and comment about how grateful that you actually mentioned that Bane should be played by a Latino actor. That’s exactly how I feel (me being half-Latino and wanting more Latino representation) and you’re one of the first I’ve seen who’ve said that.

Hey man, sorry to hear about you having a though time. I guess it really do be something we all go through. I do want to say tho that I really appreciate you as a creator and online personality that’s centered around being a comic fanboy. It was particularly your brand of kindness and empathy that felt fresh to me, as unbelievable as that may sound. Often I see a lot of DC fans for example who are clearly very misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, etc. A good example would be in the infamous Superboy being bi drama. In general they tend to spread a lot of hate towards specific groups, and just hate in general. So it honestly puts a smile on my face to see a creator who is the exact opposite of that kind of hate and is opposed to it. While at the same being able to enjoy comics that can be seen as “boyish”, but not be the toxically masculine person I associate a certain part of that fanbase to be, but of course that’s just a specific group, but still. As a guy myself, I personally find you to be a nice male role model for me. I know you’re probably not perfect behind the scenes and all that, cause nobody is, but I appreciate that you at least put out content that makes me want to type in a comment like this about you and your videos. I really do hope things work out for you ^^

I honestly dont think I've cried more in a Superhero movie, than I did in Guardians 3. It was absolutely heartbreaking at some points, while also maintaining the classic humor that the Guardians are really known for. So, with this level of emotion Gunn put into this film, I really think he could make an absolutely spectacular and special movie for Superman

I know he played Murn in Peacemaker but if they were to go for it, Chukwudi Iwuji would be a good Lex Luthor

When I think of an actor for Superman I think we need to go with an unknown actor. It's a key rule when it comes to a Superman movie

I'm so happy the movie spoke to you in a meaningful way, i hope things get better for you. I'm also not having a great go of things (not feeling worthless, other stuff) and the movie spoke to me in the sense of finding family but also finding yourself within that family

I think James Gunn is a great director, the only worry I have with him directing a Superman movie is how well he do with characters that are so well known? All of his adaptations are characters no one knew about, so he had the freedom to make it his own, I’m interested to see tho

That is such an interesting point to make about Lex and Batista. I honestly wanted an actor that embodied Lex's physicality from the animated series as well as All-Star and I never thought about Batista but I can see it and now I think it would be such an inspired choice.

Gotg3 just feels so much more real than the majority of the MCU these days, the characters swear, they get hurt and they show real down-to-Earth(down-to-Counter-Earth?) emotion.
